The original trailer for the Disney movie 'The Black Hole'. In some ways the last of the old style effects movies and 'Studio' movies - this was created during Disney's "Black" period, but the FX work is both ambitious and at times very effective. Enjoy!

I had the pleasure of working with actor Robert Forster on a show called "Karen Sisco" back in 2003 for ABC. A really wonderful down to earth person to talk to. We discussed "The Black Hole" movie & I even asked him about the films ending. He told me in detail that it came down to different creative decisions from the director to the studio. That he even tried talking to the director about making an ending that made sense & had a plausible conclusion during production, but it wasn't meant to be. He even laughed when I told him that when I was a little kid, that I had his action figure from the movie. Great memories. John

That's a cool little anecdote there John! I'd always loved the idea of getting the chance to have a chat with the actors. In many ways this is a film which has stuck with me through the years, though in retrospect it was actually a pretty dark film for an eight year old to see. Considering the beautiful visual aspects of it, and my being principally artistic in nature, I suppose it's impact is no surprise.

Dang, the actor from this movie I'd like to talk with passed away. I figured Max Schell would have had an idea of was Reinhardt really just evil or insane, and who was really in charge here. Him or Maximilian.

+John Hasselbach You lucky FUCK. Robert Forster is a national treasure. If I ever met him, I'd have an aneurysm trying to figure out whether to ask him about THE BLACK HOLE or ALLIGATOR. Only after these 2 were exhausted would I ask about JACKIE BROWN.

Thank you for that info. Funnily enough just yesterday I was wondering what it would be like to ask the cast about what was going on during production regarding the ending and how they felt about the film's climax. Whether the ending was decided late in production and who had the ultimate say about it?

For the younger viewers who are picking this film apart you had to have experienced it when it came out. Earlier scifi movies before this and Star Wars had lame flying saucers, boxy robots, and that crazy whiny space music. The ships, robots, and music score was really great for this time. All of us scifi fans from back in the day were happy that these movies were finally crossing over to better production quality. This was a land mark movie for Disney. It was rated PG, contained violence, and death through violence. That was big for us back then. You had to have seen it back in the day to truly know and appreciate this film for what it was. It still ranks epic in my opinion.

I was 15 years old in 1980, watching this in cinemas in Western Australia. I went back to watch it time and time again. For people of the era, it was magnificent. Even though the ending was a little cryptic, the journey to get there was much the same as "2001: A Space Odyssey" was for people in 1969. No-one understood the ending, but the journey to the end was amazing! You had to be there at the time to truly appreciate it.

I've always liked this movie, it had some good story concepts that weren't very well executed and some jarring shifts in tone, but it had a great design aesthetic and was pretty dark for a mainstream sci-fi film from Disney.

I liked this movie a lot when I was little. I always thought it was really dark for a Disney movie. Aside from some really cheesy parts (like the rescue scene, shown in entirety in this trailer), the movie had something that a lot of scifi movies today can't seem to get right. It felt BIG! The movie was relatively slow paced, but it worked with the bleak mood.

Cool images! This movie was running in the Oscars® against 1941, Alien, James Bond - Moonraker, and Star Trek - The Motion Picture for Best Visual Effects in 1979. Alien was the ultimate winner, but more films contended for the Best Visual Effects Oscar® in 1979 than any other year in history. That is pretty impressive.

I was around 8 when I first saw this movie. We had one of those laserdisc machines and this is one of the movies my dad got on it. My brother and I ended up bugging our parents to get some of the toys that came out for it. I got the Vincent robot and he got the Maximillian robot and the Star robot and use to beat the crap out of my poor Vincent until he looked more like Bob. Anyways, I came across the same toys cleaning out my mother's attic and thought I go look up the movie and trailer... ahhh the memories!

This movie in many senses was one of the most extraordinary films in Disney. For many reasons such as, it is what defined the path for Thouchstone Pictures when Disney had decided that this kind of genre no longer belonged with a company that mainly produced movies for younger kids. It also was Disney's come back after Star Wars, and other Sci-Fi films of its day. After having many writers on its story it really is a wonder it ever pulled through. That and being a good movie is why I like it.

Still one of the best sci fi movies ever because of a strangely, yet wonderfully, dark story about a crazy scientist lobotomizing his whole crew! The ship was genius. The design and music was fantastic. And I actually liked Vincent's design. I needed a contrast to all of the darkness. These days everyone just wants CGI, but CGI is so flat next to real models and robots. Speaking of...Maximillian is arguably the best evil robot of all time. I liked him so much I built him.

I've always thought it was a little odd that this 70s/80s era we think of as a bad time for the Disney studio was also an era when the Disney *theme parks* were going great guns--Disney World opened with Magic Kingdom and then Epcot, and there was lots of expansion and innovation at Disneyland as well, since they opened a lot of the same attractions at both parks. But the Disney movies of the time don't have a huge presence at the parks these days. Pete's Dragon did end up a centerpiece of the Main Street Electrical Parade. I suppose Tron was belatedly recognized as a target of nostalgia, got a sequel and a big Shanghai ride that's coming to Magic Kingdom.

Steven Stratton Well, Disney does have a Black Hole Remake in development, but it’s going to be written by the co writer of Pacific Rim Uprising. Which really sucks because the original writer for this film was Jon Spathis, who co wrote Prometheus. The thing is though, he said he had a fun time writing the script for the remake. He even said that it was “faithful to the original but still clever in all of the ways that the original was silly”.

Although not my favourite 80's kids sci-fi movie there are some things about this sci-fi remake of 20,000 Leagues under the Sea that I really love. Maximillian is easily one of the top 10 coolest robot villains in robot villain history and the good robots V.I.N.CENT and B.O.B are really fun and cute too. The whirling theme music has shades of Bernard Herrmans music to Vertigo and is very atmospheric. *Spoiler alert* - The revelation that all the robots on the USS Cygnus are the old human crew is a very creepy twist and I also think that Disney were clever to make a film about one of the most enigmatic, scary and awesome things in space 'The Black Hole' before anyone else did.

Firekeeper Exactly, being a laser light there is no reasonable way it could be "packed" into visible moving segments and the segments themselves would be really slow travelling in respect to the actual speed of light (399.980 km/s). In many movies the "laser segments" move roughly around 300 m/s which makes no sense as in the the same time the laser beam being generated would have travelled 23.998.800.000 meters. Even considering a very short burst (say 0,1 milliseconds) it would travel 39,9 km (39.900 meters) in this time so the human eye would simply not see it, we would just lightly perceive a small "flash" even looking at the target, let alone seeing nothing looking at the trajectory. :-)

As rediculous as this movie is by todays standards, I remember being turned onto science fiction when I first watched this movie as a young kid in the early 80's. Watching this brought back great memories.

I remember that this was Disneys' first PG movie. Saw it in the theater. Good stuff. Admittedly, the effects aren't what they are today, but in those days, it was tops. Thanks XUSSIA for posting!

This film has two really cool things about it. The John Barry score (I think the music is better than the movie is!) and the Cygnus is a really cool ship. Saw this in the theater in 1980, after it had been out for awhile.

Logan's Run is one of my favourites as well, I keep wondering what it would have been like to see it in the cinema. I saw the Black Hole in the cinema in Jan 80 when I was five years old and loved it, I still remember the experience, the smells, the ambience of the theatre etc etc. I remember when Vincent's robot friend died the whole theatre went "AWWWW". Going to the cinema back then was a totally different experience.

Even as a small child, this was one of my favorite movies. Part science reality (Black Holes are real) part surreal nightmare set to a deeply bittersweet Romantic soundtrack. The Black Hole, it will eat entire star systems and even a little dirt ball with a vampire infestation. Event Horizon (ripoff) missed the bittersweet Romantic angle completely. To date, I like this movie better than any film Pixar has ever made.

First time i saw this was in the early 80's as a small child on Beta or VHS. It's still one of my favorite Sci-Fi films even though the script is horrible. Just something about the concept and eeriness of the ship that makes this movie good.

An underrated classic, dramatically different from Disney's usual fare at the time. They shouldn't have spoiled the movie in the trailer though; a lot of it would've been more enjoyable if it had been a surprise.

Kalkas53 Actually, It didn't fail at all. It cost $20 mil to make plus $6 mil on advertising and it made $36 mil domestically. Those are pretty good numbers. Any modern movie with a $150 mil budget would need to make over $250 mil to match those percentages, roughly.

don waldren I remember reading somewhere that a movie is a financial failure unless it makes an amount that is over twice what it cost to make, since studios typically split the gross earnings of a movie with theaters 50-50. And it should make a considerable amount over that as well, since it only breaks even (and doesn't make a profit) if it only makes twice what it cost to make. But I'm a bit confused about this since Disney's making a Tron 3 (and I'm glad they're making it), which implies that Tron: Legacy made a profit. But Tron: Legacy made $400 million, which is $60 million over its budget of $170 million, but Disney also spent a lot of money on advertising.

Not exactly a failure. It made a $15 million profit. If it made $5 million more it would have been considered a hit by the suits at the studio. But $`15 million in 1979 is about $99 million. That's a tidy profit anyway.

The opening of the flush pipe in the bathtub is like a black hole, but only 2D-ish, when water in the bathtub flows away because of gravity. I've always imagined, that a real black hole sucks everything into it in 3D (from all directions).
