Cheek Cheek artists aren’t employees... lol artists have very different mindsets than people who have different skills. These people “hiring” the “employees” wouldn’t have an industry without them. Artists want a fair partnership, not a boss or a dictator. Can’t have music without the creators.

@@Lucia-Sosa then the artists can see how far they get with no financial support and promotion from the labels. they are employeed by the label to make the music and the label does the branding and puts them on with the producers. They have taken many mediocre artists to success with good producers and booking agents and promotion. Take a closer look.

Just perpetuating the circle of bullshit, evolving nothing within our species. but whatever, things are changing and artists are regaining their power. people aren’t really buying what the media pushes as much as before, people are seein through it more and more. We have so many different avenues to consume what we are looking for. So artists don’t be discouraged ;]

Yeah but that's an exception to the rule, or even is it? What is the criteria for "best burger"? What you might have as criteria, someone else might not. The point of capitalism is that people vote with their dollars. People considered the best musicians of all time are all popular (even if after the fact). So I would say that popularity is one factor, but not the only, as there are plenty of popular things that "suck". But then again, what if they suck to you and your friends but a bunch of other people love them? I've always hated Coca Cola and it's somehow the most popular soda...by far. People would also say it's the best. As for me, you'd have to pay me to drink it!

Really? Huh. I love music. It’s always been something I identified with. Maybe It’s just that I grew up in a church where we made and sang music every time we gathered. As an expression of praise so to speak. Maybe it because my parents always played music in the car. Maybe it’s that I wasn’t allowed a TV in my room, but was always allowed a radio or cd/tape player. But I love music. It makes me feel. I identify with the language of music.

Nah Idk about that, Will I am said it best when he said that everything is centered around music. Without music everything is boring. Just try and think about how music is used for all the tv/ radios ads, night clubs/ bars, retail stores, entrance music for fighters, sports arenas, festivals, etc. Car sound systems would sound horrible without music because sound systems are built for music. Music is an experience and people NEED experience.

Kwelar Subjectivity makes this sort of thing a tricky grey area. If I were to hazard a guess, I’d say that, broadly speaking, there are plenty of people that don’t really care about music beyond ambience, more still that quite like it and consider it an immutable part of certain experiences, and then the minority that have a borderline-obsessive appreciation for it that typically only comes from being a musician. That said, I fell into the first category until about the age of 14, at which time I quickly found myself in the third, and now am at the point of not being able to go a day without creating or working on at least one song.

Sid Arthur Insofar as it’s traditionally been marketed, yes, but I’d say that it’s far outlived that cliché. Obviously there are still bands that play up to that cringey stuff, but for the most part, it’s long since become a means through which songs can simply be composed and played, as with any other genre.

Black Keys are established household names. They will sell tickets no matter if they are on the radio or not. They've earned the right to call their shots a bit. Like in any work or business if you think about it. If you're a starting musician though, you will take this deal and you will like it, because you need your name out there. You can't rely just on quality carrying you, life doesn't work that way.

The industry is literally made for the artist to not make too much money because if they did then they wouldn't need labels. So a label will offer you a shit deal that gets your name out there then they offer you another deal (not as shit but still shitty enough that you can't retire) then the cycle continues. All the cars and houses you see big artists living with are all loaned to them via labels and once the artist decides enough is enough (if their contract allows them) they are left with not much. That's why so many artists try to invest in other industries like fashion etc. for example, Travis Scott earned more money from playstation than music in 2020 despite having top chart hits. So really yes, as an artist, you really are getting fucked.

That's what the issue is and as a result, there is no other industry as exploitative as the music industry. It's a form of monetary slavery in that the salve owner (label) offers its slaves (musicians) food and water (record deal). if you take it then you get to live somewhat comfortably but you are a slave and do your masters bidding. If you reject it then you have nothing and you are left to starve. does that sound ok to you?

In all fairness, the music industry has always been shit. Back in the 90's, adult contemporary and mainstream music was quickly chewed up and spat out too. Yes, we consumed music differently...but it is what it is, and what it's always been. The difference now with social media is this process is sped up much faster. Think of how quick a meme dies. Everything is cheapened beyond recognition and music is no different.

I think it is actually worse now. I heard an interview with Sheryl Crow (I'm not a fan-just heard it come up) and she's going to stop making albums altogether and only release singles on iTunes because "nobody listens to albums anymore". People don't take the time to buy an album and listen to it all the way through and appreciate it as a self-contained work of art.

It’s great to see musicians who’ve got real respect among their fans stepping aside from the nonsense, racketeering and pretence of the so-called high-level music business. Much of what’s presented on music award shows looks like strategic playacting in costume. However, in order to make this kind of stand, you need a standing. And that (arguably) has become harder to get. The number of major labels has declined and getting signed even to a smaller label can be difficult unless you fit some marketable niche. This is why the internet came to seem like an alternative field for self-promotion by independent artists. Unfortunately, it then got colonised by professionals who know how to exploit it and the social media numbers game becomes as false as some of the high-level strategies played by big labels. An alternative to both, which of course the public hears little about, is to interact online with a smaller group of people and content yourself with limited touring and self-financed recording. This has no glamour; but maybe helps keeps some of the integrity which otherwise tends to get lost.

Well what he said technically was a secret because it wasn't illegal. There is no law that prevents you from moving an Ar-15 across state lines as long as follow Federal transportation laws of firearms. The only real danger is the grenades, if they are registered with the ATF, you can own grenades. You just need to make sure whatever your state you're in is okay with that explosive which I can only think of about 5 states that it wouldn't.

I used to work in the music industry. It's a machine. To capitalize on the most hot and current music. No care for any substance. It's why Drake is so popular. He ain't no Beatles and never will be, but there's a thousand man army working to keep him relevant. If you age or do something stupid, you're gone. Look at Kesha or Katy Perry. If the music industry is unhappy with you, they'll toss you aside.

Not going to hold you, with the exception of the Descendents most of the bands on Fat Wreck Chords are really boring especially NOFX. Also Fat Mike is kind of a tryhard and really obnoxious.

I can appreciate where they are coming from here. I use to love the Black Keys back when they were raw and were doing what they wanted to do. For some time now, they have been putting out the same old crap once they found a recipe that was commercially acceptable.

Same here. I loved them early on. They influenced my playing style, my musical tastes, and my appreciation for "simple & raw" rock and roll. I went and saw them live and it was the most disappointing show I've ever been to. That may have been tired but it was pathetic. They showed up, eeked out some fan favorites then left. I quit listening after that and after Patrick's social media ramblings. I moved from them to Ty Segall in 2010 and never looked back.

Yeah, I'm one of those fans. I just love music and I'm very eclectic in my tastes. The Black keys are always in my rotation. Saw them in Fresno shortly after moving there from L.A. and, although the stadium was about half full (largest booking at that time was a mariachi festival), they rocked it nonetheless. They were true professionals and gave a great show.

Dude I’ve never listened to the black keys cause I’m mostly into metal, but that is EXACTLY how I listen to music. I have like hundreds of albums from metal bands that I just rotate through. I thought I was the only one, I was so happy to hear him describe it that way.

A friend of mine took to me to see The Black Keys, in Manchester at a small venue called an academy, in 2010. I’d never heard of them. The opening track, Patrick starts hammering the drums and I feel it vibrating through my legs into my chest and I remember looking around and seeing (I was standing) a row of people with their mouths open. That started my love of the band. What’s f**** brilliant about this interview is that all they give a flying f*** about is their music and playing music. Sign of the times that you listen to 2 real artists, both in concert and interview and realise how f***** garbage the music industry is for people who don’t want to play the social media and TV appearance game. Dan, Patrick - f***** love you both, man. Newcastle, England.
