In which John Green kicks off Crash Course US History! Why, you may ask, are we covering US History, and not more World History, or the history of some other country, or the very specific history of your home region? Well, the reasons are many. But, like it or not, the United States has probably meddled in your country to some degree in the last 236 years or so, and that means US History is relevant all over the world. In episode 1, John talks about the Native Americans who lived in what is now the US prior to European contact. This is a history class, not archaeology, so we're mainly going to cover written history. That means we start with the first sustained European settlement in North America, and that means the Spanish. The Spanish have a long history with the natives of the Americas, and not all of it was positive. The Spanish were definitely not peaceful colonizers, but what colonizers are peaceful? Colonization pretty much always results in an antagonistic relationship with the locals. John teaches you about early Spanish explorers, settlements, and what happened when they didn't get along with the indigenous people. The story of their rocky relations has been called the Black Legend. Which is not a positive legend.

John McKaffe AP United states history exam. If kids are stressing about getting good grades they aren't learning, if you fail and can't improve you aren't learning. It's just a test of who's over average and shaming the average when really the over average is just kids who do an extra habit, or have parents who work with them or tutors or work way too hard to get good grades because (I personally think if you spend so much time studying and work hard enough to get good grades it's worth nothing) have no life.

Thank you so much for the last thing you said about paying attention to whose voice is telling you about history and the voice that is not being heard. That is so important. I am an educator and I make a point of telling my kids that just because they didn't share an experience with another it doesn't mean that it didn't happen, and that our perceptions about shared experiences can be different. I hope that it is something that they will always remember.

Sontrue. Some ancient objects and artifacts found not so long ago too, in U.S. soil mind you, proves that. Including metal ARMOR and WEAPONS. No kidding. There are also ancient drawing, big ones too, depicting boats. Not rafts either. And also there has been ancient relics and more ancient objects, stone carvings too, depicting really light skinned people AND people with beards/ mustaches, goatees, etc. One such artifact shows a person using a freaking mirror to pluck out, with ancient pincers, his facial hair. Hence, when the indians saw all those spanish or any european with facial hair, barges, metal armor and weapons, light skin, it was NOT the first time people with all these things and characteristics had been in America. All that had been here before.

I think that when talking about the colonization of Spaniards it is worthy to mention that at that time the Catholic Kings recognized Indians as their subjects and as souls for God. The Queen Isabel prohibited the slavery of Indians in the colonies and order the protection of their rights of property. With Fernando II, Indians are recognized as free men. And with Carlos V it is recognized the freedom of conscience of Indians who must not be converted to Catholicism by force. Therefore, a quite progressive idea for that time (we are talking about recognizing Indians as human beings deserving respect and rights) was defended from the political “spaniard” elite. That doesn’t mean Spaniard there behave accordingly.

I don’t think it’s fair to compare the Spaniards to the Brits. The Catholic Spanish policy was convert and integrate. That’s why Latin America is brown skinned and speaks Spanish today. Intermarriage was common. Consider Cortez and la Malinche. Mestizos were born almost immediately. While the British Protestants policy eventually led to “manifest destiny “. Which meant keep pushing the brown people west and eliminate them if necessary. Both saw the indigenous populations as in the darkness of paganism but only the Catholics considered them persons as in need of redemption.

It is incredible that you try to forget the presence of Spain in America(1513-1821) for most of the territory. For more than 200 years European countries stayed away from the Pacific Ocean, considered the Spanish Lake The importance of the Spanish work has marked the wildlife, livestock, agriculture in USA. The roots of the current United States: American Historians have ignored times of its history, but Spain is present in many symbols, customs, clothes, parties etc.

You can read the script of the debate of Bartolomé de las Casas VS Ginés de Sepúlveda (if you speak Spanish). "La junta de Valladolid" was a really deep theological and philosophical debate about what it means to be a human being.

Correction: The Spanish coexisted relatively much more peacefully with the indigenes of Latin America than the English did with the indigenes they encountered in North America. They so valued the indigenous labor system that had been practiced long before Europeans arrived, so, in fact, they had a lot of legal protection, both by the Crown and the Church. The English in North America did not see the natives as economically viable and deliberately relocated and massacred many of them. This was driven by the ideology of the Church of England founded by Henry VIII. In both cases yes disease played a part. Were there violent encounters between the Spaniards and Indigenous people? Definitely, but that's insider-outsider human nature. This video does perpetuate the Black Legend quite a bit, which was actually diplomatic propaganda between Castile and England during the time period as was of no debate on the American continent.

How superficial! Bartolomé de las Casas was what today would be called a demagogue with delirious features, who regretted having written his exaggerated assertions later. The inquisisción never acted against the natives, since it proceeded according to a rigid and bureaucratic regulation and those were out of their jurisdiction. Cabeza de Vaca did not look for gold in the south of the USA, but he traveled through it after falling slave of a tribe after being shipwrecked in Florida and getting his freedom and traveling as a healer for the Indian tribes until he arrived in Mexico. He ended his days as governor of Paraguay, the only American nation where a native language, Guarani, is co-official in addition to Spanish, a remnant of his good understanding with the natives. The truth is much more complex than prejudices, but it takes more time and work to discover.

Chávez (Author) 6 - Gálvez and Spain in the American Revolution by Gregorio Calleja Leal, Guillermo Calleja Leal (Author General Washington and the Founding Fathers of the United States acknowledged that Spain sustained the American Revolution by supporting it financially, providing intelligence over its information network and protecting and supplying in its territories. They also considered Spain?s intervention in the war vital. By fighting England in America and Europe, Spain obstructed London?s strategy to crush the Revolution. Gálvez´s victorious campaigns, the capture of huge British convoys by Admiral Córdova in the Atlantic and the threat of a Spanish-French invasion of Jamaica or England all reduced British pressure on the Continental Army. They helped enable the victories of Washington where there had been frequent defeats. They made it difficult for Britain to provide troops, weapons and supplies to its forces in the Thirteen Colonies. Once independence was won, most Americans forgot both the immense financial and military help that Spain and Spanish America had provided, and the sacrifice that it had required. Not until 1996 did a Resolution of the State of Maryland officially recognized the role played by Spain and Gálvez in the American Revolution. In 2014 Galvez´s portrait was hung in the U.S. Capitol, and that same year Congress awarded him Honorary American Citizenship.

Bartolomé de Las Casas championed the rights of the Indians of Mexico and Central America, disputing a widely held belief that they were "beasts" to be enslaved. In a dramatic debate in 1550 with Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda, Las Casas argued vehemently before a royal commission in Valladolid that the native inhabitants should be viewed as fellow human beings, artistically and mechanically adroit, and capable of learning when properly taught.

It's a fun course. You will learn a lot. AP test was tough but I passed. Just keep in mind there is a lot of reading and essay writing, so make sure you can comprehend a lot of info and have good critical thinking skills. The reason you have a lot of reading is simply because APUSH covers a narrow span of history vs World and Euro. So that means more detail such as "in what year was the Emancipation Proclamation presented" or "what is the 16th amendment?" Good luck :D

AP American history was in the 10th grade year. This caused me to stay in highchool. Being 10th grade, I'm not surprised that the students complained about the difficulty and so it wasn't really challenging enough. However, the 4 that I got on the AP American History exam kept me going to try to get a national merit scholarship. If that AP test hadn't been there I probably would have dropped out.

Corrections on your introduction: Metal work was widespread but mainly reserved for ceremonial tools and decoration Indigenous groups throughout the Americas had small versions of the wheel for toys and other small items. However, the wheel would not have been advantageous due to much of terrain being inaccessible to wheeled transportation There are records of domesticated animals, but I believe Crash Course meant there were no domesticated beast of burden. Indigenous groups had domesticated alpacas and dogs for transporting materials. These work animals were not domesticated on a wide scale but still existed. Animals domesticated for food include Turkeys, Chihuahuas, Macaws, rabbits, and other small animals that would have been easier to transport and served multiple needs.

What we're trying to express here is 8/10ths. Decimate comes from decimae meaning tenth. I think 8/10ths would either be octo decima or octae decimae, I'm not sure which. That'd make the act of reducing by 8/10ths octo-decimating or octae-decimating. Octavus or octivae might be how it's formed, I don't really know much Latin. Of course, decimate was a word actually used in Latin; I doubt there was a word for "reducing by 8/10ths", so this is all speculation.
