When the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment arrived in South Vietnam, in September 1966, the unit faced a number of challenges: The enemy-Viet Cong (VC) and North Vietnamese Army (NVA); but also the terrain and weather. The lack of doctrine and tactics for the employment of armored cavalry in a counterinsurgency was equally challenging-especially during the pre-deployment training and initial combat operations.
Our speaker, Donald Snedeker, discusses how the unit responded to these challenges and became the most lethal brigade-sized unit in Vietnam.

Hello the Blackhorse Troopers ! I was with the US 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in VN for more 6 years, since Nov. 1965 (Long Binh Camp) until Feb. 1972 (Phu Loi Camp) as Vietnamese Interpreter of ARVN 3th Corp. My first CO of B Troop, 1/11ACR was Cpt John B. Landry (now he was Ret. General), and CO of 1st SQDN was Lt Col. "Tiger" Howell, and CO of 11th ACR was Col. Bill Cobb (I met him and Col.Leach in Vietnam after 1995 or....) while assigning to Regiment Headquarter (Long Khanh Province VN), I was Interpreter of Col. Patton Jr , son of legend Armor General Patton Sr. I took part in almost every operations of 11th ACR in South VN like Junnction City, Cedarfall......... I was SFC Dan Thinh, of B Troop 1/11 ACR since 1965 in VN, and I am 75 years old now

I was with the 11th at Ft. Meade when we left for Nam that was in August of 66. I was in G Troop, 1st Platoon. I returned to the States in July of 67. Will always remember the time I spent with the Blackhorse!

Thank you for this. My father deployed with the 11 ACR to Vietnam in 1966 from Ft George Meade to Vietnam. He definitely remember the troop ship he was on because you had to stop in Subic Bay before you arrived in Vietnam. I have a lapel pin of the 11th ACR that I look at proudly and I think of my father. BTW..I talked to a retired US Army member here and he said "you were lethal in South Vietnam". My father was probably in charge in one of the Mess Halls in the Base Camp there in South Vietnam. You may have met him when you went back to the Base Camp for your meals. I talk to Vietnam conflict members daily here. What, I do miss is talking to the WW II members. Sadly they are slowly disappearing. :(

Thank you for keeping the 11th ACR NAM memories alive. My Brother, Spc 4 Donald L. Martinez was KIA on 4/17/67, Long Khan. Just before Black Horse patch was issued in May. This was so informative and I do thank everyone for their part in producing it.

My Uncle Tony L. Moore was a Staff Sargent served as a Tank Commander with the 2d Platoon, company D, 1st Squadron, 11th armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. He was a Bronze Star recipient. Does anyone remember serving with him. He just passed away and we found out he was a Blackhorse Trooper?

During their time in Vietnam did the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment have organic infantry attached to their outfit? Did they fight dismounted from their vehicles, or did they mostly fight on their vehicles?

anyone remember a 1st cav Med e Vac com in pick up some WIA s was 7th of September 1969 . out of An Loc in the rubber . it was way out of the rubber . but second one was right in the woods . came in on smoke . someone Hollard get out . but were hit with an RPG or B_40 . need less to say we crashed big time . the Medic was blown out of the chopper . the gunner feel out when the ship rolled over to the left .these first two were KIA . both pilots were thrown out . I was still inside . she was on left side . when i realized just what happened I was ready to run . fair all around and didn't see anything . so I just give a jump . landed away from chopper . ran to a low spot . on the way ran across the pp . hurt .so i drug him to a small ditch. then the piolet showed up , have no idea where he came from . i looked up saw another crew member trapped in chopper he waves me over . as he was right in the flames . I flipped him off . then I went . the pilot showed up . we were able to get him out . with all kinds of super strength . you know how that is . we were a ways from any tracks . so the pilot sent me over by the ship to wave at them so they would know we were alive . so this APC drives over . and we all ran into that little fucking door in the back. so there were 4 of us two pilots and me and the crew chief . was a little tight needles to say . already had a crew of 4 . plus a butter bar and the grunt taking care of him . we thought it was a good spot to be . I looked around , I could see all kinds of holes all over . along with the wp hanging on the wall by fuel tank . so just to make sure I could get out if it when shit went to hell . I had my hand on the lever to open that little itty bitty door on the back ramp ! anyway there was a call for the medic .he was the left gunner . so he jumps out no idea where he went . but then they wanted me to run that 60 . so I did . was just looking around . then saw a guy way over by the left side of our spot . watched him walk all the way up pretty close to us . was waiting for someone to shoot him . none did . so I figured it was my shot . wasnt till he unslung his AK and pointed it at me . with a big smile on his face. so I shot him about 25 to 30 times . then a tank shot him also . just a small whiff of dust and smoke . so then they did a daisy chain with satchel charges . blew out a spot big enough for a med e vac to land . but the couldn't land all the trees were in the way . so they could hover . just above our reach . so me and someone would pick them up and shove them in the air . the medic could grab them . pull them in. BUT , and I mean but WHEN HE WOULD REACH OUT AND GRAB THE GUYS . WE GOT THE SHIT SHOCKED OUT OF US . sorry for caps . we managed to get about three WIAs up . they had room for one more . and it wasn't me lmmo . think it was the pilot . so , i had the pleasure of spending the night with all you guys ! now that was a trip . lmmo I had only been in county a month and 4 days . was in training to be a door gunner . lmfao . that kind of shit wasn't suppose to happen . of course I felt special to have been involved in that trip . you know experience ! ya right . the next morning a bird landed to fetch me . . so of course I didn't say NO . when I cam out of the chopper . I knew just where I wanted to go . when I hit the ground ,I was already going at least 90 . when I made the corner I layed way over . was going real fast my left elbow was in the grass. till I saw the pilot . when I got back to air ops I was a good guy . not in my eyes . I was scared to death ! to top it all off . I was awarded an impact Silver Star . I wasn't happy about that . didn't think I should shouldn't have received that award . had no idea what, but I was just as happy as a cat with a life time of catnip ! to be where I was . flew about 5 months all to gather . in that time I was on three more shootdowns . no one else was kIA thank god . received all kinds of hero buttons . lmmo , then I quite flying ! so that was the end of my flying time . was a permanent guard after that . they thought they wanted to go out in the field . that was one time it kept me back . this is the first time in 52 years that I have went this far . hope its not a boring . hope to find someone that might have been there . would like to ask some questions if at all possible ! have a swell day . keep on keeping on brothers and sisters . GOD BLESS .
