The Inquisitor hath returned! In this vox-log we document my quest into the arena of competitive grimdark miniature painting, as I attempt to create a Horus Heresy Blackshield from the cabal known as "The Dark Brotherhood". We will not only learn how to paint these mysterious warriors, but also examine their in-universe lore. As an added bonus you will also get my 3 personal tips for competing in painting competitions to help you stay focused, and keep your mind from slipping into a Lovecraftian pit of miniature painting despair. Man, thanks for your shout out! It was very sweet from you. Awesome video. The three starting tips are straight, simple, holy TRUTH. This is a hobby: sometimes people forget it's meant to be enjoyed for what it is. The process for the Blackshield was super interesting and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I would love to get myself a 30K little army but here gaming groups struggle with perseverance and have different views on rulesets. Horus Heresy is nowhere to be found around me in northern Italy. But I am sure, after this video, if I ever start a HH-something related, my go-to would be Blackshields hands down.

My pleasure, and thank YOU for such an amazing tutorial series. It totally helped bring my vision to life. Ya it's easy to get derailed in painting competitions, so I figured this video would be an excellent place to talk about these tips and tricks. Glad you approve! Sorry to hear there isn't a big Heresy scene in your area. It's a great game and setting, so hopefully it gains some momentum in the future. But regardless I LOVE to see some Blackshields from Dark Ages Workshop 🤘🏻🤘🏻, even if it's a small warband. After all, systems like Planet 28 exist so I could see a small group of Blackshields fitting right at home in a small sci-fi ultra-violent skirmish game.

Ya Blackshields, especially the Dark Brotherhood, are probably in my top 5 coolest factions in the Horus Heresy / 40k universe as a whole. Hopefully this video will inspire others to give these lads a look. You can never have enough Blackshields on the table-top. I have more Dark Brotherhood content planned for the near future... LFG!!!

hey man just wanted to say thanks so much for this video, i returned to the hobby after a 6 month ish break and I had been feeling pretty down when comparing my work to others or felt like I just wasnt good enough for the hobby anymore but your video atleast helped me understand that while I might not be the strongest painter in the world I can always challenge myself to improve. So thanks for that, hope to see you do more black shields projects in the future as that is also the faction i plan on playing in 30k.

Thank you for the kind comment! I'm really glad that the video helped you out. If you are ever down on yourself about your painting, or how a project is going, just remember to keep pushing forward and that your skills will grow with practice. I am not the best painter by far, but I always try to push my skills little by little with every project. Also remember that we all hit that dreaded point in a project where we feel discouraged. That's natural -- happens to me all the time. Just keep slugging away at it and you'll get there. 🤘🏻🤘🏻 Anyway, glad you enjoyed the video. I definitely have more Blackshield content planned for the future. This isn't the last you've seen of the Dark Brotherhood!

Fantastic stuff! 👍👍 I was wondering if that footage at 3:27 of the grimdark Dark Angel is going to be a part of a larger tutorial or if it can be found on your patreon, I've been questing for a properly grungy scheme for my DAngels for ages and I'd love to see your take on it.

Thank you! So that model is for a future “5 Minutes Of Heresy” episode that I moved to the back burner unfortunately. HOWEVER, the next video I’m currently working on is all about GrimDark 40k Dark Angels! Patreon will be getting exclusive behind the scenes content on the modeling and painting process as well an advance release of said Dark Angels video before KZfaq. As a general note - I do not believe in paywalling any of my content, but the Patreon crew gets a more in-depth experience during the course of a project. I will eventually get back to the Heresy series but I’m really into warband building atm. Are you looking for Heresy Era Dark Angels specifically?

Thank you! He's definitely my favorite...and he was done only using acrylic paints. I have a tutorial idea planned where I outline the paint scheme and talk about how I go about true scaling the current CSMs, using the Chaos Lord from Blackstone Fortress as an example. That offering is a ways off but I'll make a point to get to that sooner rather than later ;)

The Blackshields legion has easily become my favorite army in the Lore and I want my next army to be them still going strong 10k years later. My head cannon is theyre now entirely fleet based and thanks to The Nemian the inquisition has stayed in contact and been sending them marines the greater Imperium have discarded to maintain their ranks so even primaris marines have joined the Dark Brotherhood (allowing me to field them in 40k).

Primaris...gross lol, I'm kidding. Sounds like an awesome idea! It is worth noting that I'd be careful referring to the Dark Brotherhood or any Blackshield group as a legion, as they were more like large warbands of ad-hoc formations of marines rather than anything close to the strength or the command structure of your typical Heresy-Era legion. Small note yes, but an important distinction to make (I should have done a better job on my end explaining that in the video). So if I may offer a suggestion to the background you proposed, I would leave the Inquisition out of the picture as they would lose their mind over a group of Marines operating outside of the Imperium. However I love the idea of the Nemean using his influence to still help his boys out behind the scenes, even after joining up with Garro and the Knights Errant. That's a really cool idea. Maybe prior to the Grey Knight project (before the Siege of Terra), the Nemean used the resources at his disposal to divert Admec/Imperial geneseed tithes and assets to a REDACTED region of space (your choice - perfect for a fleet based warband like the Brotherhood), which was never corrected due to the chaos of the Heresy and the overall bloat of the Imperial bureaucracy -- thus to this day the Dark Brotherhood has been able to maintain its ranks and supplies while developing their own infrastructure (allowing you to field what you want in 40k 😉). Just a friendly suggestion from a lore-beard of an Inquisitor. Happy Dark Brotherhood building!

@@inquisitornero thanks, only reason I thought to the inquisition into it is that only a few inquisitors know about them and when they find marines that for any reason can't go back to their chapters due to circumstances but none so severe necessitating execution. Like Captain Titus from the first Space Marine Game (assuming he's not back for the sequel) would have ended up there. Otherwise the warband collects marines that have been left for dead or are sole survivors of lost chapters. The warband's chaplains are dispatched to rendezvous with inquisitors delivering new recruits and bring them back to their one and only vessel, an old battle barge called the Black Castle that's so ancient and cobbled together with cannibalized parts that it's practically a space hulk. Also looking forward to part 2

@@ReaverLordTonus Gotcha! Some additional suggestions on the Inquisition angle -- the Inquisition was birthed during the Heresy and not the organization we know (and love 😉) in 40k. Of course it's possible the two groups meet and work with each other. Now I can see Inquisitors coming into the fold much later. They would be radicals (not puritans) that are looking to manipulate the Dark Brotherhood for their own ends. They would likely be only a VERY tiny group of Inquisitors, a small cabal at best, not an entire Ordo. Remember the Inquisition already has three chamber militant groups of Astartes, the Grey Knight (Malleus), Deathwatch (Xenos), and Red Hunters (Hereticus / General use throughout the Organization). So from my perspective, if Inquisitors were involved with the Dark Brotherhood, it would be to a small group of radicals using the DB for some unknown objective. I will say the DB is good at sniffing out secret plots and manipulating things for THEIR needs (Alpha Legion learned that the hard way), so the Inquisitors in the above scenario would be hard-pressed to get them to do what they want (it could be a case where the DB is putting up with an agent from Inquisition to get access to Imperium supplies). You should see what information is out there on the Ordo Astartes -- its a small Ordo Minoris tasked with monitoring the Space Marines. Maybe a radical or two from that group are the ones working in concert with Dark Brotherhood Blackshields. Could be an interesting angle to explore. Also any of the Dark Heresy material out there is good for world building. Now in no way am I saying your scenario doesn't work, only suggesting writing/backstory angles to make everything fit nicely within established Lore. The Captain Titus example is a good one in that Astartes that might be slated for execution or some other punishment (see Uriel Ventris) before some radical Inquisitors divert them to the Black Castle (nice narrative choice btw). Personally I would just make the Black Castle a space hulk to begin with but that's because I love space hulks lol, either way that works well. Sorry for the long reply, you got the Lore-brain churning. Part 2 is gonna be a lot of fun, as will Part 3 👀. I have couple projects ahead of those atm BUT in the next couple months the Dark Brotherhood should be making a return to KZfaq. Gotcha see how that all pans out, fingers crossed!

@@inquisitornero I like the additional info, I figured it would be a few Inquisitors who know about the DB. That would make sense as they would be responsible for sending loyal astartes the rest of the inquistion would easily execute or imprison. Perhaps Inquisitors who secretly follow the Imperial Truth and don't buy into the "Everything is Heresy" thing and are secretly more rational. But they could also be ambitious, using the DB as pawns in a greater scheme, however the DB would know they hold leverage and may not always go along with what the Inquisitors want unless it benefits them or their mandate to serve the emperor.

@@ReaverLordTonus Ya the relationship would definitely be one of necessity. Both parties would have a very tenuous or strained relationship. Sounds like you got most of the hard parts of the world building figured out or at least work out to a degree when you can fill things in later -- sounds like a great concept for an army. I haven't decided whether or not I want to expand the Dark Brotherhood guys I'm working on past a Kill Team level. You have certainly motivated me to give it a second thought as to whether or not I want to scale them to army strength haha.

Later this year 😉. I did a bit of redesigning on the other boys in the squad, and had to track down some bits I didn’t have on hand. For this group of Blackshields, I wanted to use official GW plastic (incase I wanted them to see any action in a store or tournament). Also I didn’t want them to look similar to another warband I’m working on.

So one alternative to liquid greenstuff for stipple textures is to use milliput and just thin it down with water, I think I originally saw this on black magic craft but I'm not sure.

@@inquisitornero also if water doesn't work it might have been a different solvent, I think it was water but it might have been isopropyl alcohol... apologies but it's been a year or more since I saw this.

@@TheMichaellathrop So I found a similar video discussing the same technique from Marco Frisoni using milliput, indeed it was isopropyl alcohol. Water is great for smoothing out the surfaces of the milliput, but the isopropyl alcohol helps change the milliput into something like liquid green stuff. I still havent been able to get the same consistency as liquid green stuff yet...so I have to experiment further -- however the milliput mix has been a godsend with regards to gap filling for the current project I'm working on.
