The BLISS of Non-Attachment - The Spiritual Path of Letting Go: Vairagya Shatakam of Bhartrihari

Күн бұрын

Perfect peace and contentment in life are gained, not by striving harder, but by letting go. The futility of conventional worldly life and the blissful delight of rejecting it are shown with biting sarcasm in Bhartrihari’s remarkable work, “One Hundred Verses on Non-Attachment”.
0:00 Introduction
4:17 Verses with Translation and Explanation
32:42 Translations Recited for Meditation
Bhartrihari's beautiful and profound Sanskrit poetry emphasizes a key principle in Advaita Vedanta - to gain enlightenment (moksha), ignorance of your true Self (atma) must be removed by spiritual knowledge (jnana, vidya). But that knowledge remains inaccessible unless you become an adhikari, a fully prepared aspirant, which is possible only with the cultivation of vairagya, dispassion or detachment.
Swami Tadatmananda is a traditionally-trained teacher of Advaita Vedanta, meditation, and Sanskrit. For more information, please see: www.arshabodha.org/

Coincidence does not exist, but when I "discovered" the knowledge of non-duality, then I "accidentally" discovered Swami Tadatmananda and ever since, I have had a brilliant ray of light shining my way. His wisdom and profound knowledge of Advaita vedanda and other sacred texts are worthy of my reverence. Thank you dear Swamiji for your precious teachings.

Wanting the approval and acceptance of others, I unwittingly open myself to their criticism. When I do not seek approval and acceptance from others but give myself those things, I see good everywhere because Love is being reflected.

I'm somewhere in between as an individual. I'm not so status-obsessed. I have no family of my own. I have less money than many of my peers. On the other hand, I'm hardly walking the nature trails carefree, full of bliss. I work pretty hard, and feel I've gotten a raw deal compared to how smart I am and how hard I work. Nobody visits me. My parents are dead and they showed little interest in my life, although they loved to see me when I visited them. My life is consumed by work, but I still give myself lots of time to spend in beautiful places. Anyway, it's all jiva stuff, and I'm not the jiva. Desires come and go, but I don't come and go.

these are idealist ideas - retreating into a spiritual practice or monastic life is still seeking/desiring some something, to be in the in group, part of a system of belief, monastic life etc - we are mirrors of ourselves and think about what others think about us it is simply what minds do.

Isn't it possible to know the spiritual intelligence of who we are at our core, with all level levels of understanding within, and still enjoy the physical body and to find joy in the world we live in currently? I think we are on this Earth to know love and to fully understand who we are along with the knowledge found within, but also to live the best physical life that you can with that knowledge and understanding spreading love along the way. I don't believe it has to be one or the other but actually a blending and merging of the spiritual and physical Self. Namaste 🙏

Indeed. The whole point is to enjoy it in a detached vigilant manner knowing full well that desires are a trap. In short if a cake comes your way enjoy it (if this is approved dharmically) and let go being vigilant not to crave that cake again... it is that craving that will lead us down....

How do you reconcile the fact that Arjun fought the war to preserve his reputation (i.e., krishna telling arjun people will think he's a coward if he doesn't fight)....and the idea that one should not be affected by the way others see them?
@llusory_World
@llusory_World 2 жыл бұрын
In my opinion--This was in context with motivating Arjuna to perform his highest duty, dharma, he being of royal family, to fight for the right cause, so that right rule is established, for the welfare of the people. It may not be wrong to think thus, as did Lord Krishna, if it relates to our ignoring or shirking our duty, putting up various unjustified excuses.
@Jiv509
@Jiv509 2 жыл бұрын
The way I see it Arjuna did not make the decision to fight with his reputation in mind. I think Lord Krishna used statements and questions like those merely to logically probe/stimulate/guide Arjuna's critical thinking. Eventually Arjuna made the decision to fight because he realized that he is responsible for doing his dharmic duty and with the understanding that no one truly dies(only the body).
@llusory_World

You can live your married life, but from a monk-like perspective. Have a wife and do everything for her without desires, have sex with your wife but without selfish desire, remind her of the One and do your sadhana daily, have kids so more souls can be saved from a world of desires and will become enlightened, do your work without looking forward to your salary, work as less as possible, spend every minute of your day in remembering the One. Keep following the teachings. Keep your desire on enlightenment. That is the only thing you want. Please marry, you do not need to become a monk. Only if you really want. But the easiest way is enlightenment and then family life if you really want that afterwards. There is no hurry. Focus on enlightenment, nothing else matters. I already have a family life and giving that up would be ridiculous. ❤ I hope it is clear that you can have a family, but enlightenment needs to stay 1st priority and you need to life a monk-like life from now on. Having a partner is very nice and being both on the path of enlightenment is incredible. Some can become monks, some become monk-like. It is upto you to decide if you wanna go for being a monk. There is always an option to try it out for a few months. Here in the temple in the United Kingdom they offer monk life for 1 week, 1 month, 3 months or 6 months. So nothing should stop you from making a decision. Wishing you all the best and much love❤

I don’t think “enlightenment” is that difficult to find. It’s not something that needs to be strived for with years of spiritual practice, sacrifice and study. Your true self is right there for the taking, it always has been. it’s just being drowned out by the noise of chaotic thinking. Silence your mind and be in the moment.
