Sadly we have been here before. After the 1853-56 war Russia analysed her performance and continued the struggle with Britain and western powers, where she could. Only in 1914 did Tsarist russia save Western democracies from Kaiserine Germany by invading east prussia, effectively disupting von Kluck's advance on Paris. Of course it was the British BEF's action on the Marne which saved France and put the boot into the weakened germans. Weaken because 2 corps were transferred to stop the brave headlong russian advance. Strategy-wise Britain and Russia should always be friends, but try convincing our misguided london politicians of this. British diplomats and army officers understand it....but can't say so publicly....it would be the end of their careers if they did.

Valid point. Origin of "Russia" is local's words for the activity of those Nords (Vikings) who came to dominate the rivers: the "Rowers" e.g. the Ruskies. That's a nation. Contrast the region everybody knows means "borderland". What kind of nation identifies as "no-man's-lander"? Well, NATO nations use it as a war-zone even to this day. The Ukrainians I've known define their identity mostly by what they aren't, in jealous contrast against nations that are secure in their identity.

You know what's the weirdest part? The word "ukraina" was historically used as "borderland" and had no georgaphical ties to anything. Then Zaporozhye cossacks in the south, being the most prominent borderlanders, appropriated the world for itself, but didn't identify with it (they were just borderland cossacks, not a nation of borderlanders). Then the idea was picked up in the western historically pro-russian lands of Galicia by poles and austrians, both of whom held a sizable chunks of russian lands and were afraid of Russian Empire coming in to take them back and to prevent that tried to convince russians under their rule that they aren't really russian and shouldn't ask for Russian Empire to come. And while rusyns firmly rejected ukrainisation (down to them getting genocided) galicians over time gave in, partially due to russian negligence of the topic. But even then thosr ukrainians didn't view themselves as separate from greater russian nation, rather just a separate branch of it. Then came communists who really wanted a proper independent ukrainian nation for some reason and put a lot of effort into ukrainising not just western, but central and eastern parts of Malorossia and even the whole of Novorossia, which never wanted to separate from RFSR in the first place. Yet the modern Ukraine views Soviet Union as evil evil oppressor that tried to destroy the poor ukrainian nation. So it went from a random word, to that word being used by southerners due to their geography, to being appropriated by outside powers and forced upon western lands, to then communists expanding the concept on the whole of Malorossia (and even parts of Greater Russia) to create a new nation, to said nation building it's own identity on hatred towards both soviets and russians. And it also claims to be the one and only direct successor to Rus which apparently was always ukrainian and spoke "old ukrainian". What an absolute mess.

I would add, as Cossacks liberated lots of those areas, offering to the Tsars, they kind of neglected them as the US did to Texas, and however they spoke, had a strong sense of separation.
