It's almost hard for me to believe when they wonder why she had a baby when she was clearly pregnant. But I have to remind myself they have only the knowledge of 6-7 year olds. For all I know, they coulda thought her stomach was filled with baseballs...

It does make me feel so bad that Richard genuinely wanted to help her while she was giving birth but he had no idea what was happening.

This movie really highlights how unfair it is to be a girl. Just by virtue of how nature set it up. His coming of age involved playing with himself. Hers involved bleeding out in a pool. Sex for him was fun. For her- this happened. Ouch.

The movie made it look like neither Richard or Em had any idea about that baby until it was born. I doubt that entirely. In that situation, and with 'that' much time to mull over that big belly and all the little nudges and kicks, they must have realized what was going on. They were living in the natural world after all. None of the processes of life were hiding from them on the islands. I'm sure they both must have realized at least by the time she was 5 or 6 months along that she had a baby in her belly.

She might instinctually knew that “something” was happening. But there’s no way for her to really “understand” the situation and the reason to it. If my memory is correct, the timeline of this story was among late Victorian era, that’s somewhere around times even before the 1900s. By the time, boys and girls were not taught about anything about sex or so. Plus, Richard and Emmeline were 9 and 7, and were also kept away from the world. So I do feel that it’s pretty normal for Em not knowing her pregnancy at all

@@JohnDylan811225 we'll never know for certain what was going through her mind at that time. But I'm going with the idea that growing up in a natural environment with hundreds of creatures around them, all mating, walking about with pregnant bellies, dropping little creatures who would then follow them around. I really think Em and Richard would have understood this more clearly than many people who lived in society at the time.

Well, it also makes sense because on the island by themselves and really, they don’t know anything like that like they didn’t know they were doing or where anything’s at minds of children, because they didn’t have nobody else to Billy teach him how to be older, and how to be adults or how to be teenagers, so it just kind of makes sense to cousins house and I would ask if they didn’t have any wheels around, especially if they were children when they got there

I would rather have natural birth than have gall bladder stone pain again. And this is coming from someone who had natural birth with pitocin (makes contractions stronger and couldn’t get the epidural in time)

The movie takes place in the late 1800s early 1900s and they’ve been stuck on the island since they were 7 so they hadn’t had a chance to learn about it, it’s was taboo to talk about the process of that kind of stuff until marriage

@@RariaRoyal Well they were little children when they came to the island. When Paddy died there were no adults to educated them about puberty, intercourse and childbirth. They had to learn all of this on their own, naturally their bodies knew what to do.

Hmm, that's weird... I remember another birthing scene in the Blue Lagoon. As far as I remember, this happened during the day, the heroine gave birth quietly, without screaming, and the guy watched from behind the bushes at that time. Although, maybe it was in another Blue Lagoon, because, it seems, there was a second part.

Without screaming is pretty unrealistic. Scientists have determined that childbirth is the second most painful thing a human being can experience. The first one being burned alive.

Not at the time the story was set. This film was based on a book which was set in the Victorian era. Pregnant woman of that time were usually kept away from the general public. In fact the period around late pregnancy, birth, and postnatal recovery was referred to as her 'confinement'. And women didn't dress to showcase a pregnant body, it was hidden, so anyone growing up isolated would have no idea what was happening here.
