The BMW Z3 - Prices are About to Go Through the Roof.

I had a BMW Z3 for the day and took the opportunity to look into this two seater sports car as a future classic car proposition. How have values changed over the past three years, and where do I think values will go.
Are we looking at the final year in which prices will be affordable?
And what do you think of the BMW Z3 as a future classic. Will the likes of the Alfa Romeo GTV, Fiat Coupe, Audi TT, Mercedes SLK and Mazda MX5 also follow suit?
The model in this video is the 1.9 Auto, and was previously owned by a Saudi prince in Dubai!

I’ve been looking at the price curves on cars like Ferrari and Porsche’s for years and you normally get the best entry price at the 15-20 year mark. Past the 30 year mark they are normally back to the price they were new. A new £100k Ferrari 355 or 993 turbos for example dipped to entry prices of £35-40k and they’re both on their way back to £100k. Past the 40 year mark I’d expect them to be in the £200-400k range. I think the Z3 and Boxster to do similar multiples relative to their original purchase prices and timelines. Man maths definitely helps buying future classics 😂🙌 For me if it’s a mid 90s two seater convertible it’s an SL500 or SL600 all day long 😎🚀

Thanks for stopping by and taking a dump on the little folk with their tiny investments in cars that went from about $3,500-$4,000 going all the way up to $10,000. While you were dumping $35-40k and now heading to $100k. Congratulations, you're a 10 year old playing in the 3-4 year olds sand box!

since june 2020 I am the fair owner of a "modest" bmw z3, a simple 1.9i titansilber from 2001 that makes my heart beat faster every time I enter the garage. I have wanted it since I was 13, in 1995, and when my husband gave it to me I swear I couldn't believe it ... it still seems like a dream to me !!! It is so well preserved that I am preparing the papers to make it "gold plate" (the highest prestige for a vintage car, here in Italy). I love it and would not sell it for the world

He nailed the overall essence of this roadster. I have had my 1997 25 years come April. It is finally arriving at the classic stage I knew it would. When he said it just makes you feel special, I knew he truly understands a Z3. It is for lack of a better term…, a savory dish meant to be enjoyed without haste.

First time on your channel. Love the old-school vibes in this video. Just love it. And a proud silver '97 Z3 owner here too. I have the 1.9 and it's loads of fun. Thinking to get one now. I was told the rooftop is very loud. And even when closed the heating doesn’t get the car warm very easily. What is your opinion about that? I thought about using a seat heating and everything should be fine.
@seppevb1181
@seppevb1181 Жыл бұрын
@@MathieuDeVinois hey! yeah, it's pretty loud. But tbh, what do we expect? It's just a bit of fabric. Hardtop might be better, but for me, it's part of the driving experience :) :) my car is parked outside and it only takes a few minutes for it to heat up. I think the heater is from a 3 series or something because man, that thing, once it gets going, heates up the small cockpit very well :)) sure, it's chilly when it's below zero and it's not a modern car, but it's a perfectly driveable 365 days/year car.

Absolutely bang on KZfaq assessment of the Z3. I just picked up the 5 speed manual '02 2.5i and I could not be happier. I will throw every expendable dollar I have to keep it running as German engineers intended. It's a love affair with the visceral, pragmatic, and raw driving experience the Z3 provides. Top down, sunshine, and just drive.... does not matter where the destination is.

I was fortunate to come into a bit of money last year, soon after we’d moved out to rural area with some great country roads. For the first time in my car-loving life, I started craving a drop-top. Looked at various MGBs, Chimeras etc but you nailed it in this review - Z3 has a bit of that classic roadster vibe while still being modern enough for airbags etc, and I feel like the shape has aged gracefully compared with contemporaries like original TT/SLK etc. A lovely little 3.0i facelift came up for sale locally and I couldn’t resist. As you say, it’s never going to beat an Elise on the bends but that big straight-six up front and the faithful roadster layout (none of this new-fangled, mid-engined Elise/MGF nonsense…) with big longitudinally-mounted six up front under that long bonnet gives the vibe of a Healey or TVR S. It’s addictive stuff and the engine note is wonderful too. I love it! (although kinda wish it had the red leather seats of your car rather than standard boring BMW black)

I recently picked up a manual 2.5l model here in the states. I was entertaining an Mx5 and some other roadsters and small sporty cars from the 90s - early 2000s. Prices on most of my Highschool “dream cars” have shot through the roof these past couple years. Then I remembered the z3. Once I started perusing the classifieds I was really pleased to see prices for Z3s were still pretty reasonable. It’s as if the secret wasn’t out yet. Like the casual car fans had yet to discover there were other real-wheel drive 2 seater roadsters out there of this era. I ultimately purchased a well-kept and unmolested Z3 and its been a joy

I am 35 and just made my driving license. (Yes late..) I need it for my job now. And only thought about renting cars occasionally first. While doing my license lessons it came to me that it’s wise to buy a cheap car to get practice. So I looked around more or less unsatisfied about what rubbish you get for your money. Found a decent offer for a boring car and visited the dealer. Where I saw a green z3 from 97 covered in dust in a corner of his workshop. My sister (a car addict who drove me to the dealer) asked him about it and he said that it needs to be maintained and he’ll need some months for it. We all had a small talk when the dealer said.: „Look, you can have that (boring) car the moment you have your license and I’ll make you a price. But I see you aren‘t that motivated. That Z3 makes you light up. It’s looking poor now. But when I am finished he’s like new.“ nothing wrong with having fun with your car. So, I‘ll start refurbishing it and call you when I know I’ll finish him so you can make an appointment to let the car get checked while having your test drive.“ so now (3 months later) I have my license. The z3 is nearly ready and I am really thinking about to buy it when the final check doesn’t open up serious questions. Especially as the price is reasonable and all those ugly cars aren’t much cheaper either. They are not as old and have less miles. But, are basically worthless. That video motivated me even more as buying that fun car doesn’t seem to be an endless flow of costs. It’s more an investment. With fun.

I was in the roadster market about 10 years ago, and at the time I looked at Z3, Z4, H2000, Boxster and Mx-5. Wasn’t looking at specific years, but was looking for cars in the $10-15k range, and was absolutely looking for a manual. I know people love the Honda and the Porsche, but for me they felt like they would be good if you were pushing them to their limits on a track, but were a bit rough to just enjoy a leisurely drive around town. The Z3 has the prestige, but lacked a lot of performance. The Z4 was brilliant - had the elegance and prestige but also the performance to match. Comfortable at low speed but a maniac if you pushed it at all. The price was the highest of the lot and the seller a jerk so I passed. Wound up with the ‘05 Mazdaspeed Miata, which had extra performance and styling upgrades, and immaculately maintained by the owner. Great combination of laid back fun when you want it and thrilling performance when you find the right road. Love the channel - keep up the good work!

I think you are correct here Freddie. bought a 1990 318is E30 ten years ago for £1695. just sold it for £13.2K. I didn't spend any money on it other than service items. Was garaged and seriously pampered though!

Such a nice car Freddie, I've always had 3 series coupe's and have E92 at the moment but was only looking at Z3s and Z4's last week and thinking of maybe changing, but wow when I saw the prices I was quite shocked compared to 2-3 years ago, you're certainly right about the desirability of these great cars and I think I might have to change before it's too late😁 I also think a good MGF is going to be a car on the move upwards too maybe, love those too, great video as always Freddie, great stuff👍

The Z4 is a very tempting proposition too- and seriously good value at the moment! MGF- very good shout and I agree- this, as the last of the old sporty MGs will be a bang on classic (I overlooked the MGF for some reason)

I've been in love with these since they came out and I troll the market every now and again but, it seems all the good ones are in Florida or California (1800 miles away). Now, one landed at a dealer not 10 miles away and I'm going to look at it this weekend!

It's a good thing there are so many of them, or else I'd put a hex on you for promoting my favorite fun roadster! I have owned, in chronological yet disparate order: 97 2.8 manual, 00 2.5 auto, 01 3.0 manual, 98 1.9 manual, and 01 3.0 auto! The slight downside is that my 95 MX5 was better on level elevation twisty slalom like roads, or in autocross. But the NA couldn't keep up on mountain roads. And neither of them can keep up with my 986 Boxster on a mountain road. But the Z3 is the best for cruising, funnest all around, and most exciting in the turns. It's the only car I can hang my arm down over the door since my Triumph GT6 back in the 70's. And they are sooo different and unique from one configuration to another that it's like owning different car models. I bought my 95 MX5 for $1,200 in 2016 needing a top and a new fuel pump (replaced tank as well), sold it for $8k in Dec '21, and had offers for $10k after I had already accepted a deposit at $8k. The take away is Miata Is Always The Answer. So go buy one of those!

I did purchase in 2019 a Z3 3.0 with 92 000 kms. Mint conditions, absolutely trouble free, fully loaded with chrome package, harman kardon, CC, Stunning topaz blue color… At the marvelous price of 14k€. Bought it completely accidentaly, I just sold a Mercedes CLS 350 at that time (I’ve always been more attracted by big land yacht), I was looking for its successor when a friend lent me a Z4 2.5 wich I found brilliant. Then, I started to look for Z3 2.8s as I prefer the look and the overall old school feeling of Z3s… One day, my 3.0 popped out in Netherland, I took the biggest risk of my entire life buying it absolutely blind… Best decision in my Life, I drove it back to France and I enjoy it since that day. The car is absolutely trouble free and is a blast to drive. Today, good luck finding one for less than 17 or 18k on the continent… As a car guy, of course I sometime feel like I want to sell it. But then, one only question ever remains : which other car could I buy for 14k, that fun and that enjoyable ? Even for 20 000 or 25 000k, wich car could bring that much pleasure with the peace of mind that offers a Z3 ? For that, reason, I will try to keep it as long as possible. PS : That being said, I have one tip to share with those that are looking for this car : don’t overconsider only buying the 3L. I think that it doesn’t bring that much of a difference compared to the 2.8. Addition to that, prices are still a tick lower for 2.8s and there is plenty more cars with this engine. In the end, you will pay more for the 3.0, but the difference is mainly in your head in everydays conditions. Plus, 1.9 with 140hp for much cheaper are also very recommendable, just focus on manual transmissions 😉 Cheers. Vincent

I have a 2000 Z3 and I love it, converted to standard clutch & flywheel, also MagnaFlow exhaust, I don't use the radio in that car, don't want to disturb the purr , you can put your elbow out the window, you can't do that with a Z4, the high door line for safety turns me off. I also have a 97 Land Rover Discovery, I think it will be a classic too. Paid 8K for mine about 10 years ago.

Loved the intro Freddie 👌 You can't beat a bit of open top driving. I remember my wife and I looking at buying a SLK some years ago and I'm discussing technical issues with the seller and suddenly my wife shouts "We've got to buy this car" She had found the cup holder which popped out the dash and rotated 90 degrees before dropping into position. Most expensive cup holder I've ever bought 🤣

Hilarious thing about those "bling" cupholders is my old Toyota Van from 1995 had similar ones in the rear of the center armrest. Subaru Legacy's from the early 90s have similar pop and fold double holders in the dash. Mercedes finally caught up.

My 01 3.0i is about to hit 200,000 miles and I've had it for almost 11 years and I've never loved any car more. The M54B30 engine is in some trim of every model of early 2000s bmw so parts are easy to find. Car's been to the shop once (mistake) and I've done everything else myself. Car can basically be rebuilt with your grandma's tool kit, incredibly easy to work on. Looks fantastic, so much fun to drive, great power, great reliability. I will never sell it (and people have offered me twice it's value) because nothing else fancier or nicer brings me as much joy to drive.

I bought my 2000 2.5 manual Z3 in 2020. I was monitoring Boxsters, MX-5s, and Z3s. Found a good deal with a removable hardtop and all the little BMW extras for $7500. Excellent shape interior. I decided to pull the trigger and buy it because I had read two articles that summer stating that the Z3 was at the absolute bottom of the price curve and they were going to start going up. Looking at Autotrader I bet I could sell it for $10,000 today. Maybe more since it includes the hardtop. Those are rare.
