When i did mine, where the excess is, i put polyester with cabosil and rounded it with a party plastic spoon, to make it easier for the fiber to get the shape, the edges of the coosa i rounded it, before installing it, with a router and and a 1/2" radius bit, hope this helps you if you haven't done it already. Let me add here that most of what I know about fiberglass work I learned it from you.

Your reason for polyester is exactly why I'm using poly on my project. The fact that you can just keep right on laminating or stop for a week makes the most sense for me because I work 6 days a week. Just bought several different rollers and pre cut 1708 rolls at 8 inch and 12 inch rolls. Also bought some 6 oz roving and have ordered a small 10 yard roll of 24 oz roving.

Hi Andy, It is such a breath of fresh air to hear your comments regarding the use of polyester. I live in Australia and have been keeping myself busy in retirement by doing some complete rebuilds on old fibreglass power boats in the 5 to 5.5 metre range. I have stopped commenting on several of the Facebook sites over here relating to restoring old boats as everything is you must use epoxy. I use epoxy for all gluing and polyester for filleting and layups. As you said these old boats were all built out of polyester so why not rebuild them with it. It is so good to not have to wait overnight for epoxy to go off before the next layup. I have watched your videos for a long time and want to sincerely thank you for sharing your expertise.

Absolutely epoxy for bonding and glass layup below waterline, but generally speaking poly for most repairs is perfectly fine ;-)

When it comes to mixing my gel coat or poly resin, I've completely switched to ml. It's much easier to do ANY of the calculations. The only time I do drops, is if I have to mix only 1oz (29.5ml, which I round to 29) for a small repair. If I want to catalyze at 1.5%, it's easier for me to calculate 1.5% of 500(ml), than 1.5% of 17(oz). 1oz=~29ml. I highly suggest using syringes for your MEK measuring. It's a 1:1 ratio ml:cc (5ml = 5cc) For those who have trouble with the metric system, try looking only at the number for ml and forget about the words: cubic centimeters/mililiters.

I've used polyester resin mixed with talcum powder as a filler to do fillets and fairing with no issues. But most importantly is the polyester resin will break down the binders in the chop strand mat so that it can move freely and be rolled out much easier
@robertp7209
@robertp7209 2 жыл бұрын
There is no mat in 1708, but is in straight chopped strand mat, as long as it is layed flat - no issue with epoxy might look odd but no other issues. It does get springy though - that’s why to lay it in flat applications. I only use epoxy and only use 3/4 oz mat, never 1.5 oz. If I need more just layer 3/4 oz. If you need to bend it, better stay with it until resin kicks otherwise will find it set standing up. Polyester stinks can’t stand it and not using the organic filter mask, no such thing occurs with epoxy except for a few moments when both parts are combined. By the way, 1708 has the equivalent of 3/4 oz mat but with no binders.

Your point about not needing to deal with the amine blush and sanding between coats is very valid. I am curious about a laminating epoxy resin like the System 3 Silvertip Epoxy which according to their documentation does not have any blush and can be recoated without sanding if done within 72 hours.

Just finished restoring a 71 Powercat, I used polyester resin, works like a champ and easy on the wallet. I like epoxy, but hate the cost and the wait time. I will say you better have your act together on a polyester layup! Otherwise you will end up with a mess! I restored a Sleekcraft about 12 years ago, again all polyester, she had been beaten and rode hard, and has held up great! I don't have a thing against epoxy, but you just don't need it sometimes. I do uses epoxy here and there, but mostly as a bonding agent more than laying up glass. I am always amazed at how everyone gets worked up on this subject. Hey just use what works for you and what you like. They are both great products, don't get lost in the weeds!

Hey Andy, great tutorials. Informative, flowing and humorous. I stumbled onto your vids (luckily) as I’m down here in Montana with a project boat without advice or supplies. I’m replacing the rotten core of the salon roof/upper deck but….from below. No access to a shop so gotta do this from inside against gravity. YUK. Trying to learn as much as possible from your vids and just caught you using the Polyester Structural Repair Putty here. You’ve sold me on Coosa and wondering if the putty would be a a good choice for Coosa to the upper skin and also laminating Coosa to Coosa. Working upside down I realize whatever I use will have to be thickened big time. The putty looks about perfect for this nightmare. Thanks much in advance. Cheers, Bill

Great vid thanks Andy 👌 look forward to seeing the glass laid up next week. Iam using poly for my project, partly because of costs, and also I think if it was made from poly why not use poly for the repairs. Iam also planning on using gel coat so definitely need to be poly for any work that's getting coated.

I've decided to restore it so I've started gutting it, at the point of cutting the glassed in floor. Is there a resource you could point me to on best practices? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I've never worked with fiberglass or resin before. Thanks

Love your work Andy, keep it up. I have a question ( hope this is the right place for it) I’m redoing the transom on my 1981 c-dory and over 6 ft of length I have 4” of curve. I want to use coosa ( originally it was built with scored balsa core , 1 1/2 . ) I haven’t been able to get my hands on Coosa .. so I don’t know it’s “bendability” 🤷‍♂️ which combination of Coosa should I use? 1/2”x 3 layers?, ….3/4 x2 layers?? The curve of the transom is a 4” out at the Center. That’s a lot of pressure , I’m thinking.. ? Or are curvy transoms best done in balsa?? Thanks bud!! Hope your day is awesome! Doug

With 500 Dromedille Hi I here an old with 500 I am about to recover it consists of two hull an inner hull and is outer hull. I have divided it into two parts and remove the old foam that was in it and the old wooden plate that was in the hull and there are 7 fiberglass frames in it instead of foam. There is a new wooden plate at the bottom and in the aft mirror. But have a damage to my inner hull as it gets a separated. It is inside the boat the so-called deck. But it can be made on the ideas side and then the part inside the hollow space of the boat when it is assembled. But am a little in doubt where the one I best for made the crack in the deck

Been curious about the repair putty. In your opinion, would this be an acceptable media to fill old screw holes on a console (from old electronics mounts) or old screw holes from where a bow rail used to sit? I would cover it in a layer of new glass and gelcoat afterwards.

See bow rail holes if you plan on ever reusing that area I'd do an epoxy pour into them and tape small pieces of peel ply on the bottom holes like a plaster so the peel ply is inside the perimeter of the tape, pour, top up the holes a few mins later then pap some peel ply over the top holes. You will get a clean fill and minimal sanding afterwards. See the problem with the bits that bow rails are screwed into is they are cored so you really want to be filling that entire void in or that might come back to bite you especially if you plan on bolting something on there later.

Use 60 or 80 to cut back and 80 before fairing. You don't want to use 120 or above for cutting back solid epoxy lumps and bumps as you will end up sanding mountains in rather than cutting back. Once fairing is on if its easily sandable then start at 125 for a quick skim on dodgy bits then move up to the next grit quickly don't oversand with the first grit just get it flat enough that the rest of the grits will even the last of it out as you start sanding outward and using bigger passes to super flatten it.

Little bit of a loaded question, but for recreational boats this is the analogy I use. You have a 10 ton boat and the marina has 2 lifts; 1 that is rated for 25 ton and the other for 35. Does the 35 ton lift do a better job than the 25? End of the day doesn't matter as what you need is still below either capacity. For most applications poly is a perfectly acceptable resin to use. There are always exceptions, but in most applications it's more than acceptable (as long as it's not the cheap crap from big box stores ;-)
