I love how the 90s show capitalized on that perfectly, the Man-Spider form is the coolest thing to never get reused in any other Spider-Man media. The comics did do something similar at one point with some Savage Island story, but with what little I read about that it's clear it's not the same thing at all. Ultimate Spider-Man, the animated show, would adapt this story, but again, not the same sort of Fly story.

@@DayOldMeat it actually does, johnny feels the pain of his body burning alive every time he transforms, it is excruciating to him or any rider to transform. also the human does not have much control over the spirit similar to a werewolf. so yeah ghost rider is a representation of body horror its just done in a more religious form.
@DayOldMeat
@DayOldMeat 4 жыл бұрын
@@zleeven Okay, fair dos. I just don't think it counts. Body horror is a modern genre, specifically to do with conscious alienation from your own body through transformation. There's werewolf stories that are body horror, but werewolves aren't necessarily body horror. Equally, demonic possession isn't body horror per-se, but can have such elements. Ghost Rider is a demonic possession horror story.

@Furzkampfbomber
@Furzkampfbomber 4 жыл бұрын
@0g0dn0 Maybe the thing we can learn from our comics is that everyone and everything can be corrupted. When even Superman can turn into a zombie or Batman into The Batman Who Laughs, nothing is safe. Well, maybe the real problem with super powers is that they have the potential for corruption already build into their very fabric. See, I really don't like those story arcs that involve the fate of the whole universe or even of a variety of parallel universes. When a metabeing becomes so powerful that even with a sneeze it could involuntarily destroy a universe, then those powers and this being are not only something I can not relate to anymore, it also shows us that great power more often than not can and lead ultimately to a downfall, usually and unfortunately while also harming a huge number of innocent people in the process.

like ADHD, with ADHD people act like they are on speed- Due to ADHD feeling like 'the addiction to doing' and when im not "doing" such as using this phone that i havent put down often since i got it 4 years ago i feel a horrible pain throughout my brain, it feels like one of the worst things in life, because for me it is, in cities it usually i feel some of that sensation with the environment around me, being deficent in forests i dont have any of that, or with sufficent diffrences and similarites to a forest, thankfully i have a backyard, my body is informing me about the comfort and safety of my location, and time being the most important resource, ADHD is positively selected genetically, i intend to have a permaculture food forest, and some ponds with fish and veggies throughout the land, i grew up on the coast, and when i left the Pacific coast of the us for the first time on a plane i felt a drastic departation from meeting a need, because yes i know there are stores and lakes and rivers with water at my destination in the center of the united states, but now i have departed from the largest quanty of water that i knew available to me in forests i find darting around my eyes to survey the area and looking at sources of motion to be rewarding and comforting, and i believe that people with a tenacity for this behavior helped look out for bears and other things that like to nom us up the cities were never where we evolved but we created, and theres a law, not a legal one but one that explains that "if a human does not know how to open a door then the door is broken" in regards to design cities are quite representative of that "broken design with blind function over riding other needs"

I wish 2018's Venom embraced more body horror aspects when Eddie was first learning how to exist with the symbiote. Eddie sort of just jumped to letting Venom do the driving when he'd be in trouble, and there wasn't too much "inner struggle" that I'd expected after reading, say, "Venom: The Hunger". The thought of needing to consume another living thing or being afraid of growing into something huge, monstrous, and unstoppable around those you love.
@Gojirawars03

I'm late to this conversation, but that's why I'm sad Venom is a solo film. We need to see the symbiote bond with Peter first so we can get that tension and that struggle, we can really feel the horror of it. And that in turn makes us understand why Eddie and it are such a perfect match for each other, when Eddie accepts it and really bonds with the thing.

A body horror movie that is a literal horror parody of "Spider-Man" is the remake of "Earth vs. The Spider". The entire movie is essentially the Spider-Man origin story but if it all went wrong: A weak security guard uses the experimental spider-serum at the lab he works at and becomes a super hero. But he slowly becomes a horrifying blend of man and monster, slowly becoming more arachnid in both appearance and instinct.

@cosmicdream17
@cosmicdream17 4 жыл бұрын
@@Shoulderpads-mcgee I can try to explain in brief. The series basically takes the Hulk back to his classic horror roots, back when he was drawn by Jack Kirby and Sal Buscema. It brings the deepest, darkest tendencies of the character to the forefront. The new main status quo is that the Hulk is now immortal, even when Bruce is shot dead, the Hulk comes back to life at night. It combines gothic body horror with engaging action sequences that are filled with dread. The Hulk is now much more vicious, sadistic and cunning than ever before, and he's extremely protective of Banner. The writer has done a terrific job of keeping the series interesting and accessible for new readers while rewarding the long-time comic fans with deep cuts and the return of classic characters from the Hulk's past.

Really good analysis, and a unique one at that, subscribed! I wonder about one MCU character that I don't think you mentioned, which is Loki. The horror of the truth of his adoption manifested itself physically through his reversion back into the body of his birth, that of a Frost Giant, which literally transforms him into a "monstrous" form with blue ridged skin and demonic red eyes. Unfortunately, they kept his more human facial structure for his transformations, avoiding his father's more skeletal look, and kept his transformations quick and easily reversible. They also kept the emotional trauma focused more on his identity crisis and his insecurities vis-a-vis his father and brother, so he never really acknowledged the physical part of the trauma. Worse still, they never brought the subject up again in any of the subsequent Avengers or Thor films he was in. It's a shame, because now that you've brought it up, I'm even more hopeful that they'll bring this subject back up again in the DIsney+ show, because they're so much juice that can be squeezed out of this. Cheers, you really made me think!

It’s fascinating how that one difference in the seminal Marvel comics so drastically set them apart from their DC counterparts. You have to remember somewhat that DC, before the start of the Silver Age, had an absolute monopoly on superhero comics. Any superhero comic coming from Marvel during that time would have been snubbed before it ever hit the shelves. Marvel using horror and suspense as a vehicle to deliver their superhero stories was a necessity; if you look at the original F4 comic covers they LOOK like monster of the week stories, with the four not even in costume. I feel like that kind of underlying intensity to the old Marvel comics is also what helped build the company in those early years. DC comics in the Silver Age had a heavy reliance on novelty and catering to a much younger audience than the Golden Age comics did. Readers who missed the grit of older DC comics probably found some solace in the new Marvel comics.

The most on-the-nose version of "superhero origin as body horror" is probably Josh Trank's Fantastic Four, or at least the parts of it that survived the final cut. Great video. Honestly a really interesting take on something we're so familiar with and blurring the lines between heroes and horror. It reminds me of this old comic called Marvel Ruins. Basically it's a twist of realism to what would happen if the events that made normal people into superheroes happened in real life and it's obviously doesn't end well. The gama bomb that turned Banner into Hulk turns him into a hulking mass of tumors, Magnito is unable to control his magnetic powers and literally pulls the iron out of people's body unwilling until he's crushed by an airplane, the spider that gives Peter his powers actually ends up giving him a type of skin eating cancer that kills him. It's all very horrific and I think you or your teams should give it a read sometime in the future. In any case I've liked and subscribed so I look forward to your next upload.

Also Spawn has very much body horror.Al Simmons was once human who then his boss betrayed him and burned him alive.Then he came back as a demon from hell with his body composed of a new material called necroplasm and his skin covered in scars and burns.Finally his arch enemy The Violator is a demon who can change from a disquisting clown to a hideous monster with giant teeth,jaw,saliva,nails and hairs just like a bug.

Spider-man had always worked very well with body horror. Vermin, the man forced to regress to a state constantly reliving his trauma inflicted on him while living in a body made into a rat-like creature. The list for body horror in spider-man goes on and on.

It's crazy how you didn't mention Doom Patrol, which since the start has been a body-horror comic about people cursed with debilitating powers and trauma, learning how to use those hard knocks to fight where the other (far more traditional DC Comics) heroes can't tread. Also, spoilers... It's all down to the hubris of a mad scientist.

Its funny, but in other material out there, I've seen the Venom Symbiote re-imagined as a 'splinter' of Carpenter's version of "The Thing (From Another World)" , that chooses to bond with its victim instead of consume him..... for now.....^_^

This entire video kinda reminds me of Worm, and to a lesser extent the rest of Wildbow's books. It's a superhero web novel, with a ridiculous amount of body horror, ranging from something as minor as the existence of Case 53s, people who got powers that permanatly altered their bodies and erased all their memories from before their powers, to Panacea's fuck up when she accidently used her biokinesis to turn her sister into a tangled mess of meat and body parts that's still very much alive, to Bonesaw having a pencent for grafting people together to act as her minions, such as grafting Mouse Protector and Ravager together to create Murder Rat. Not to mention that one of the main characters has the ability to overtake the motor skills of others, and puppet them without brainwashing them! And that's without getting into Pact, Twig, and Ward with esoteric magic and monsters, most of which were formerly human or came from humans if I understand Others correctly, alternate history where something like the Frankenstein monster was seen as a good thing by the king instead of an abomination to nature, and Worm 2, the rules have shattered.

When you fight monsters make sure you don't become one. Interesting how this even goes into manga/anime with: devilman/astroboy/guyver/goku/guts/shinichi/inuyasha/yuske yer a meshi/garou.... gojira. Also wonder, DC has etrigan/swampthing/beastboy/raven/any latern ring corp/martianmanhunter/cyborg/starfire in puberty beside that there's toxicavenger/spawn/jackie estacado. Videogames and standalone cartoons probably go even further but thats another rabbit hole with monstars.

That's an interesting take I never thought of. I'd say the Thing would be up there. Yeah, he can throw a bus, but can't use a regular toilet, ride in a car, or even write without breaking several pens. I never really thought about it until the FF movie, which I thought was decent. Johnny asks Reed why Ben can't turn it off. And then his body transforms and his wife rejects him, leaving her ring on the bridge. And he can't even pick it up with his new hands. That's body horror.

Body Horror is my fav type of fiction anything. It's the only thing making me interested in some Comic Stories. Especially those Marvel Comics that showed the worst possible scenerios for the most famous Marvel Characters. like the hulk turning into a big mass of tumors before dying or the silver surfer dying in space not being able to handle the transformation. Forgot what the comics were called but they were pretty good
