The Body Shop falls victim to the ‘commercial curse’ of ‘wokery’

GB News presenter Darren Grimes has called out The Body Shop for focusing on “whackery and wokery” over sales and customer service following reports the beauty business was going into administration.
Administrators will reportedly focus on reducing its costs as up to 200 stores face a risk of closing.
The Body Shop came under fire in 2020 after implying author JK Rowling needed to educate herself on transgender rights.
“I actually think this goes to show the commercial curse of being woke, a woke joke, it struck again,” he told Sky News host Rita Panahi.
“We saw this with Bud Light, we saw this with so many other of these woke corporates that are focused on the wrong priorities, and it comes back to bite them on the behind.”

This is when I stopped buying from the body shop over JK Rowling.When I last walked past one a few months back they were supporting 16 year olds to vote.They just need to sell their overpriced products,that's all.

A little off topic but I recently heard an argument for 16 year olds being allowed to vote was that they have similar brains to 18 year olds. To me, that sounded like a strong argument to raise the voting age instead.

There's no upside to a company taking a cultural/political position. You can only lose customers. It's hard to keep a customer, easy to lose a customer and damn near impossible to get a customer back.

Last year, my daughter and I went to The Body Shop and all their staff wore pronoun pins, and of course, there were several "they/them". I'm supposed to go there to buy products, not step on egg shells by accidentally misgendering someone 🙄🤦🏼🤷🏼... 😂

The sad thing is that many, maybe most, of those shops are franchises that will now shut down even though they had no say in what Body Shop did. No loss if the Body Shop goes under. I haven't shopped there for years ever since reading a book called Killed-Great Journalism Too Hot to Print. Within its pages is an essay called "The Stranger-Than-Truth Story of the Body Shop" by Jon Entine. It spilled the beans on Anita Roddick's self-serving exploitation of idealism, and the article ended up being killed by Vanity Fair. Reading this was a real eye-opener.

I bought their hemp cream for my daughters skin issues in the 90s. It was expensive, but worked. We had been threw every prescription product. Never bought anything else. Not in my budget.

The Body Shop was woke before “woke” was a thing. They changed hands several times, and with the changes that came with that, lost their Baby Boomer, GenX, and older Millennial base, and failed to be innovative enough to capture younger Millennials and Gen Z. I’m actually surprised they hung on as long as they did.

Such a shame they went that woke path. Ofcourse was their policy on being anti-cruelty against animals and great message. As Rita mentioned was their anti female was my boundary on boycotting them. Have so much beautiful memories on their products in the 90s when my mother was still alive and adored White Musk. Honestly I bought a few items on Amazon to have the scent for the future years as a memory. I think the body shop will go bankrupt.

For me, it's about the quality of the product. I used to love TBS, like 50% of my skincare & make-up items are from TBS. But then, they gradually discontinue good product, reformulated products which ended up too harsh for my skin, their body butter's scent is overwhelming.

My late father went to school with Anita rodrick. as both grew up in Littlehampton in the uk . she passed away a few years ago and so did my dad. but once the founders gone so dose the drive and vision. just look at apple no Steve jobs no innovation . no Charlie pearly no lec refrigeration in bognor regis . There familys don't always want to run the companies or the companies gos broke due to lack of investment. over heads kill it or it gets asset stripped for hedge fund guys. it becomes just another nail in a companies coffin then the government mone no one wants to work. well who fault is that if the powers that be screw it all up with high taxes
