I kind of love that the explanation for anything supernatural is just that Keith is Not Okay. Like, we've established that demons and ghosts and fairies exist in this world, but they legitimately had nothing to do with Boogie's game. There were no monsters or randomly-appearing graffiti, Keith is just not a stable person.

in bad end 4 when boogie says "looks like you did things out of order, detective. but still, not bad." it sounds like he's talking straight to the player. like, imagine you're playing this game for the first time, going in blind, and you happen to miss a few of the secret scenes just on accident. and then the boogie basically tells you "oops, so close! but you're still missing something! :^)" like that would be so frustrating but at the same time it hints to the player that they need to find more information in order to get the true ending? which is pretty clever

I love how the characters match their "monster" and their setting perfectly. David was a man who thought he was worth nothing and had nothing to lose, and the crooked man worked hard to show david that there he has so much to lose and when the time finally came, David gets shown that people care, and he decides to live his life to the fullest. Sophie was a girl with insomnia who was bullied with so many repressed desires (as shown by Lullaby), so the Sandman's world was the perfect area for her to gain some confidence while still being wrapped in a somewhat safe atmosphere. And now there's Keith. A dark castle and a mystery for a stone-faced detective. He protects as many as he can. I havent finished the video and its been a while since I watched the other videos, so sorry if I got anything wrong.

Love the parallel in all the games when it comes to David. The Crooked Man, then Shirley commenting he looked crooked because he slept weird and strained his neck, then him saying his neck is gonna break with Keith on top of him. Man cannot catch a break!

I think it's really interesting how, if you dont count Sandman, this is the only game that doesnt involve supernatural entities. I guess you could argue that Keith is being haunted, but it seems more like psychological issues to me

Yes, but I do believe op meant the main story and how the Boogie (literally the silliest villain name, who's next, his brother Disco?) Is a serial killer with a gimmic and not a ghost or fey creature, and that, discounting the small Sophie related sandman stuff, its the least supernatural game with a normie as the main antagonist/driving force, and the ghosts are in the characters head because he's haunted more by memories than actual spirits.

@@ajiprnk4821 Brendon never died at all. They explained this outright in the true ending. He sliced off the head of a doll done up to _look_ like him in the dim lighting. The person who shot Keith in ending one appears to be Keith himself - "the Boogie in your head" - which implies that Keith takes his own life while hallucinating. Ending 2 is... uh... really unclear, but from the looks of it, Keith returns to the safe room, finds everyone gone (killed?), and then hallucinates being at home with his son as he bleeds out - like Helena's "happy dream" from ending 4.

One the things i love the most about this game most people don’t notice the first time they watch/play the game me included, is the fact that the real boogie man enters the fray and messes with keith multiple times and even attacks sophie out of bitterness towards her, even leading towards keith’s demise in one of the bad endings. What makes it fun is that if you realize it and study certain scenes as well as the true ending you can go back and know which one is going after him at different points and i really enjoy that aspect of the game.

Keith’s talk with Helena in the true ending grave scene really got to me. He was speaking as if he was talking about my life. Sure I’m definitely happy and can express myself, his personality matches mine. Hiding your true emotions is something I have been doing for years! Anyways, I’m fine currently, but that speech sort of reached me on a personal level that most things can’t.

I think the thing with "Items that are important but you cant pick up" is a 50/50 thing, right? Cause from a player point of view, it's just convenient. From an in world point of view, you're just pulling out bloody corkscrews from the faces of people for no reason!

I plan on making my own Strange Men fan games and I thought of how it cod be both so like you know to take this into account later but you don't pick it up right away. My solution is a sorta notes mechanic, so if you interact with something you can't use or do anything with but will later on, something in a menu will be added so it's like. "Door with red knob is cracked" so that way if your lost you could use the notes to act as a sort of guideline.

Not to zero in on one little detail… but yes, Sophie’s pink jewel is _literally_ her ability to fall in love. The part of the game where you get it hints at that pretty hard - and the ending supports it.

Some info from an RPG Maker dev about that issue with moving up the stairs: You absolutely can script the game to move the player diagonally without introducing any new code to the engine. There's really no reason those stairs should be so awkward to navigate.

One thing I really like about this series is that every installment is a very distinct subgenre of horror. Crooked Man is the epitome of dark, self reflective horror akin to Silent Hill. Even "David Hoover" is like, the most SH name I've ever heard. Sandman has a few of those dark fairytale vibes, closer to something like Pan's Labyrinth with a bit of Yume Nikki mixed in. Boogieman is straight up something like the first season of True Detective, plus maybe a few original Alone in The Dark vibes with the mansion and an investigator. Hanged Man... Idfk what it was going for, but it was a strong vibe.

to be fair i don't think he was a "mad man" I think the boogie man invaded Branden to play his game on real people because " Fighting the whole world is too hard" So he chose a group of people and played with them which is why he had no problem when his original victims changed on him getting replaced with keith and his wife, Its also why keith saw things others didn't because he was the most vulnerable to the boogieman trying to hide his worst nightmares under the rug.

im pretty sure you didnt mention this in the video but if i remember correctly there's an option where you can turn off the voice acting, so if people dont like it they can just turn it off. i love options like that tbh. though for me i like the voice acting. (especially sophie's i think she does the best out of all of them. they're all good though) the direction of some lines arent the best but still lmao

Good video. Very well made, to the point I didn't realize it was almost 2 hours long until I read a comment saying it was. I'll be honest, I cackled when they used the word rump. (Spoilers for bonus Scene) I fucking called Sandman not letting Keith sleep after making fun of Sophie. Like, Sandman saved her ass and she was telling him she appreciated his help in protecting her.

the one frustrating thing about the voice acting is that you can tell they're all amateur in the way that they talk like there's someone in the other room that they don't want to disturb. the one exception to this is shirley, whose gotta be my favorite VA out of any of them

Something I really like about these games is that the characters just sorta... meet. There's no super big moment of them coming together or anything, they just met like normal people (kinda) and they interact like normal people.

the voice acting really ruins this game for me. it's not even that they sound bad, it just completely takes away from the atmosphere somehow. i guess it's handy if you're watching a playthrough though?? i think the only character out of the entire cast that really benefitted from having a voice was the boogie man, his voice work was really effective and actually enhanced every scene he was in

in my opinion I probably would turn off the voice acting. It's a mixed bag, when its good I don't really feel differently but when its bad its completely emersion breaking.

After the gruesome scene of the actual story, that bonus scene got a good laugh out of me, especially seeing sandmans eyes get angry and immediately cutting to Keith being unable to sleep.

Absolutely LOVE the way you narrate games and find it really interesting, it keeps me focused on the video regardless of the lenght, something not a lot of videos manage to do (no, I don't have ADHD, as far as I know at least) Also amazing how I ended up liking Keith despite him being an ABSOLUTE ASSHOLE SPOILERS: Gotta love how Sandman gave him a lesson for laughing at Sophie like that, very creepy for me how he's "in love" with her but hey at least he protects her

I just can't get over the voice acting in this game. The game is good and the dialogue is well written, but it just falls flat when someone is reading it. It's not the fault of the voice actors (most of them), but they just aren't professional. They can't offer the wide ranges or truly convey the depth of the parts, so it's just distracting to hear. I feel kinda bad saying this, as I'm sure they tried to do this as best as they could. But regardless of that, it just doesn't fit into the game. I wasn't necessary. But it also shows the passion and love poured into the game as well. Despite these being one of his first few games, he really tried to expand and try to increase the quality of this game. I think voice acting should only be done if it's done well. If it's done poorly, it really diminishes the quality of the game, as in this case.

I appreciate the voice acting but more than anything it took me out of it. Any serious moments were made funny because of it. And any moments that were supposed to be funny fell flat. A few of them worked but most of the MC’s didn’t.

I love the way you explain these games’s stories. From little points where you chime in to explain certain scenes, to you just talking about how certain parts feel (how creepy or underwhelming they are.) it all has this certain feel to it.

I lost my mom a long time ago. I'd felt exactly like Keith had ever since, I'd rarely expressed myself after- I couldn't even cry when I heard about it. But I found people I truly care about. I'd started to begin to truly laugh again, and cry. Thank you, for making this video.

Wonderful video, with wonderful coverage. I love the developer's involvement with his previous entries; and the fact he was still able to have the influence of the fairies in a story like this is an incredible skill of writing. Fantastic video once again!
