What if you could listen in on a conversation between two devils? C.S. Lewis’s "The Screwtape Letters" takes you through letters between Screwtape, a high-ranking demon in the underworld, and his inexperienced nephew, Wormwood, and their plan to deceive man into sin and ultimately hell. Michael Knowles and Seth Dillon of The Babylon Bee discuss Lewis’s satirical masterpiece on this episode.

This was required reading in my senior high school college prep English class, back in good old 1966/67. After I became a Christian in 1970 I finally 'got' it and am a huge fan of C.S. Lewis.

@@sofiarou7603 It's been so long ago I don't remember...I was 16 and a lot of it was way over my head as far as understanding is concerned.....when I was 20 I heard the gospel, accepted Christ as my Savior and I began reading and understanding the Bible. I discovered that Satan is like a roaring lion, going to and fro in the earth , seeking whom he may devour...he comes to kill, steal and destroy. And he has an army of helpers, fallen angels who rebelled against God and were kicked out of heaven. Satan is still permitted to go before God, in Heaven, where he is the accuser of the brethren. We are all either serving God or Satan, the god of this world.

I was riding back from a university debate with my debate team, a van full of non-Christians in 2010. Our co-pilot was looking for a good radio station. We happened upon a reading of the screw tape letters. All conversation stopped and everyone was instantly enraptured by it. I was the only one that knew what we were listening to! Yeah, sadly we're as susceptible to the suggestions of Satan and his hordes as any unbeliever. This is one of the reasons why we need each other to be able to speak into each other's lives - one of the most brilliant analogies in the Bible is the Church as being "the body of Christ," as when one part of the body malfunctions it requires the other parts of the body to "heal" (as directed by the Head).

As someone who’s struggled with body image issues for several years, Letter 20 was SO eye opening for me! It really shows you that not everything is as it seems, especially in the fashion/modeling world.

I read C.S. Lewis' Screwtape Letter many years ago, and it was a very solid peek into the spiritual war behind the scenes of the great controversy battle between good and evil. May God use these old classics to lead us to our heavenly homes one day soon as we prepare for Jesus soon glorious 2nd coming (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18).

I have yet to read this book (it will be delivered tomorrow), but listening to the conversation here and all the nuanced actions taken by the devil against us, it hit home for me that if not for the Grace of God ALL is lost. We can't win this Spiritual war alone. God bless us all.

Loved this discussion and overview of the timeless book from C.S. Lewis! This is a great resource that I have been using to better help students of the Word and I appreciate the approach taken in this video very much! My newest, favorite quote from Mr. Dillon, "What good is it if God wins in the end but you were on the wrong side?" Love it!

The Lewis book you should do next is The Abolition of Man followed by That Hideous Strength as well as the other books in the Space Trilogy, then Lewis' book Miracles, in that order.

There is so much to be found in this book that has very practical application to the Christian life. Whenever I pick it up, I will always find myself reading the eighth letter, particularly the last part, which is as good a summation of Habakkuk 3: 17-18 (one of my favorite passages) as I've ever read.

It's been at least 40 years for me, since I read it, somewhat ineptly, but I have never forgotten it. The words DO get into you, whether you invite them or not. Time to RE-READ, as if I have just found the FBI strategy letters for dealing with all of us who love God and America.

We need to guard that our "Patriotism" does not take the place of our Creator. When I was at the Capitol, I "got the idea" to march right up those Capitol steps, but a "still small voice" whispered, "That would be rude." By His grace alone, I listened to the second thought. Further "arming" myself with a page by page & play by play voracious re-read of this stunning author's classic handbook. Thank you both for an incredible review!

Just listened to the Focus on the Family recording of Screwtape Letters at the end of a road trip Monday with my college aged sons. I'd find time on a drive with each kid, about junior high age. So much wisdom in these/CS Lewis, and early teens is an age when they process some of the complexity. This video is a great tl;dr to get started!

I love this one. I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and we have a principal of agency that Lewis represents very well. We believe that God's plan really is all about giving his children the power to choose their own destiny.

Lewis said that it was a very easy book to write, but it nearly suffocated him. Once the idea of demonic letters occurred, it would be possible to write them indefinitely. However, because he was writing as a devil, he had to remove from them everything nice. Everything had to be grit and nastiness. There couldn't even be any humour.

I read this a long time ago now. Yes, lots of insight into the spiritual battles. Gentlemen we were always destined for heaven from the beginning. Hell was a place for the demons. Our freedom allows us the choices which will determine our outcome. The Lord always wants us with Him in heaven. Great discussion.

I too was going through a terrible time in my late 20’s. I turned my face and heart away from god. I told god I hated him. Well praise Him because I accepted Him as my lord and saviour. CS Lewis’s Mere Christanity was one of my favourite books then and still is. This happened 50 years ago. I look forward to seeing Christ one day.
