Great detailed review, I'll be going to see it tomorrow. You gave the best balanced review I saw, pointing out the good as well as the more problematic parts. Good stuff

The gospel of Thomas is a "gnostic" writing. Jesus is sortof in there somewhere but the main idea is about ascending through knowledge. I haven't seen the movie but listening to your review the movie could maybe described as a gnostic gospel.

Absolutely. I think you're right that it's very much influenced by gnosticism, and its portrayal of Jesus is more reflective of gnostic gospels like 'Thomas" rather than the canonical gospels. etc.

Thank you for the review. This movie was very fictional but there was also some elements that had some truth in it as well. Overall how the movie makes you feel it’s up to you the viewer/consumer to decide. Change can happen for better or for worse and I feel a lot of people can relate to the main protagonist in one or another.

Thank you! I agree. The movie is a good redemption story, and that overall character journey and internal change is commendable (even if some of the specific ways the movie gets Clarence to that ultimate destination can be debated or critiqued). Appreciate the comment!

Good review. I find that most non believers are brought to Christ through experiences in life. He is revealed to us not through the gospel but through our trials.

I’m so confused, either your lighting is superb or you’re using a green screen bc you’re literally popping either way I like your set! Looks like a shed setup def dope! What bars are you using? I’m building one out myself

Ha Thank you! Appreciate that! We've had fun tinkering around with the studio to try and get the lighting right. I think most of the lights we have now are 'Aputure' brand, and they've been working well for us. Have two bigger lights facing me, and then the tube lighting on both sides and behind which I think help add some separation. Best of luck and have fun with building out your own set!

Spoiler Alert! It feels GOOD to see someone preach Knowledge is better than Faith and then the light eventually appears.

Hey Paul. I thought Clarence's spiritual journey was really interesting too. He contrasts 'knowledge' and 'belief', and I feel like perhaps 'faith' is where he ends up, with faith being the combination of those two. He doesn't accept belief blindly, but seeks after the truth, which ultimately leads him to have stronger faith and conviction at the end. At least, that's how I understood it. Thanks for the comment!

Very well said! I agree that it was interesting to see a story about a person who believed in science over faith come to faith

Hey Brother in Christ… I believe this movie shows more about the gospel than you gave it credit for…Christ calls us all to Him, some may be called through health, they develop an illness and then see Gods truths. Others come to Christ from living unclean lives so I believe this movie is an explicit calling of people who live like Clarence to see that their is only one true power in this world and in the heavens and that is God the father, Christ the son and the Holy Spirit. This is more of a story on a black man’s coming to Christ so it has to portray the obstacles he has to overcome in order to see Christ fully. It is the seed sowed on poor soil surrounded by thorns and so God shows here that He will use ignoble things for noble purposes meaning Clarence’s lust for power will ultimately lead him to see that true power can only come from God. Clarence acknowledges this multiple times and at the end he carries his cross and dies like Christ did because we are all to be made in Christs image but he is not Christ because this movie showed that in order to be brought back to life, he needed Christ….like many Christians I had a hard time fitting this movie into my Christian box but I also saw the relationship of Jews back then to black/brown people to today with regards to how we may be treated by authority. I am a “minority “ male in this country but that is not my identity, however, this does not change how I may have been targeted by authority in certain circumstances so I can appreciate the parallels. My only true problem with this film was that Clarence said Christs words when he should’ve been asking for forgiveness…

Hey! I appreciate this very thoughtful comment. I think you're right about the symbolism of his crucifixion, and I agree with your last point about him saying Christ's words and why that can be problematic. I still think the wider out you view the film the better and more powerful it is, but the closer you look at it and the details the more (in my opinion) it doesn't work. Clarence's basic journey is good picture or metaphor for being conformed into the image of Christ, but his actual journey and relationship with Christ seems more "self-improvement" than "salvation," with Jesus more just showing up at the end to commend his actions and life changes. etc. Still, like you say, I think what makes the film so interesting is that it doesn't really fit neatly into a box, and can impact people in different ways depending on what aspects they focus on. Thanks for your insights!
