@asanitheafrofuturist, go and look up the name Cesare Borgia on Google and click images. It was the Europeans who whitewashed the whole bible. MAKKABIYM RI'SHON (1 MACCABEES) 3:48-50 And laid open the Cepher of the Torah, wherein the heathen had sought to paint the likeness of their images. They brought also the priests' garments, and the firstfruits, and the tithes: and the Naziyriym they stirred up, who had accomplished their days. Then cried they with a loud voice toward heaven, saying, What shall we do with these, and whither shall we carry them away?

@rikkibreeden5233

I think Cumberbatch's role is just to say that: why is jesus depicted as a white man, because he didnt get a second look when he was just another black person but when he cleaned up and became something different (beautiful due to difference) then all eyes went to him. Eyes were drawn to him and he got all the attention. He has all this money now and is "making it rain" which drew the attention of the Roman's as a messiah and because he was different the artist wanted to paint a picture of him on the cross. So while 12 other people were crucified he was the one that was recorded in art. (My opinion)

God forgive me because I originally judged this trailer harshly myself because I immediately thought it was blasphemous but when I SAW THE MOVIE FOR MYSELF, it was not at all that way. In fact, it made me have more patience for unbelievers who struggle. As Christians we forget that coming to Christ is a journey for ALL and that's what matters in the end. What Clarence used for evil, Christ used for good in the end. Who cares what the actors look like, who cares that it's not 100% biblically accurate, and who cares that it's not the usual Christian movie with perfect characters who never curse. If you can laugh when a black man is feminized and calls himself Madea while in a dress, can watch black movies/series that portray black on black crime, laugh at black comedy that divides black men & women from staying monogamous, and pop your fingers to blasphemous rap/r&b that clearly promotes idolatry and fornication, then you can put the stone down before you cast it. Stop for one minute and use this rare opportunity within Hollywood to introduce the topic of Christ and the how Clarence stopped just thinking what was best for him, but giving his life up for others. Take a moment to talk about the division of black men in the beginning of the film and how they stood up & helped one another in the end. I'm not a fan of JAY-Z and Hollywood sins, but just like Clarence's motives, Jay-Z may not have any clue why he was a part of this movie. God can use ANYTHING to get His word out, even through the most UNLIKELY person. There's a CLEAR message in this movie that we are ALL sinners, but it is Christ who uses who HE wants to and THANK GOD we aren't judged by man who looks at the outward appearance of this movie, but the heart of the internal message which is to BELIEVE in HIM!

I HAVE seen the film, and it's everything you say and more. The acting is superb. You didn't mention Alfre Woodard, but she is fantastic in her one scene. How does Jeymes Samuel get these incredible stars in his films? Omar Sy is huge in France and as Lupin on Netflix. He really brings it in his supporting role as the "immortal gladiator". This isn't just a good film, it's a good movie, with tons of action and comedy. And no, it is NOT blasphemous.

I could be going on a limb here but I think the character of Benedict cumberbatch was a nod to the constant white-washing of black culture and the merits that come from black culture/accomplishments. Our protagonist (Clarence) was being crucified and it was heartfelt and yet the guy being painted/ going down in history was the white guy who looks like the typical interpretation Jesus rather than the real Jesus in the film or our protagonist we’d being rooting for the entire film. Soundtrack was stellar. I definitely couldn’t help but groove on multiple occasions, and the smoking floating scene was phenomenal to say the least 10/10

Went to see the movie Thursday. Loved it. If you know your Biblical history you know that there were many at that time who were claiming to be the messiah for various reasons. This story is told from the perspective of one of these people who happened to be related to one of the disciples. No mocking God at all. In fact, it’s a redemptive story.

Just saw it. And yes the bad reviews are because of the concept. Nooone wants to take a black Jesus seriously. But ten stars i laughed so hard and cried so hard especially towards the end. Because when its from this black perspective it actually makes sense why Jesus got murdered in the first place. Because of cultural and spiritual differences which makes me feel seen. And im not religious so it really moved me into a new thought process. Ya ll go see this movie. It was well done and smart.❤😎😎😘😘✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿💋

In order for Clarence to connect with his higher self, he had to find himself first. He had it all along. He had to look inward instead of upward. "Knowledge is more valuable than belief." His complete and final coming into knowledge of God wasnt hinged on a feeling, societal influences, rewards or punishments. It was personal, it was irrefutable, it was selfless, it was REAL. Brilliant story!

Philippians 1:15-18 New International Version 15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16 The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,” ~ Best book every written The Bible, I pray that many more souls get a chance to go deeper in Gods word. This was a wonderful review and straight to the point. I agree with your critique but I would rate the film a 7.5/10. It was really nice and aesthetically pleasing but some parts of the storyline were a bit disjointed to me. I watched the movie and my original interpretation of the preview was exactly how the film played out. I’m a seminarian so I knew this film would offer a different perspective that occurred back then. Also, I knew this would be entertaining and not a biblical documentary lol I never thought this film was blasphemous. Also, Benedict Cumberpatch’s role was to show there were “other” people being perceived as a savior too. There was a scene where the Roman Soldiers were like, “is that another person acting like a messiah?” But I believe it was also a dig at the “white Jesus” complex too. I thought it was HILARIOUS!

Honestly, I wasn’t aware of this movie until I came across this review. I’m more inclined to to see this than The Color Purple tbh but I’ll probably end up watching both anyways. Just subscribed and looking forward to seeing more reviews.

To answer your question, Benedict’s role is to show the fact that even when you get saved it doesn’t mean that hard times won’t come or it may make you become persecuted as the Bible says.

I appreciate your review and agree with a lot of your points. I saw the film today and to me it's a curious and satisfying love letter to Christ. It sort of does what Star Trek does for me when imaging a diverse future, except it expands imaging a diverse past. I loved the emotional depiction of men. I loved that hair was natural which was normal. There are bits that confused me, but parts to love far outweigh those.

Benjamin Cumberbatch’s role in the movie is why people believe that Jesus is white.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s role I believe was purely there for the crucifix. Scene where we see the guy painting the white “Jesus” that was to let us know that it only takes one person, making up a story or believing a story and handing it down to generations. We all know that there’s no way in Jesus could have been blue eyed and blonde haired, but that’s what the paintings look like everywhere except Italy, of course. I thought that was the second deepest scene in the movie . The deepest, of course, was the scene where the character was explaining why the moments were scared of Black people.

To all the Clarences and Clarencias. Great work Jeymes Samuel 💯🔥I agree the ending needed another 1min or 2. Benedict Cumberbatch role was phenomenal too. Few clues to his role but fitting. Reflect on the artist painting his picture and his statements 😅

My sister made plans for us to see this movie, I was thinking OK if I get a day off, B's review makes me want to see it a little bit more, and on top of that it looks like it is a positive Black movie with no agenda's. I may see this movie because of that even though I haven't seen a religious movie that I liked. It seems like the negative comments or reviews may be because of the Black actors portraying characters or events from the bible and you know that triggers people.

I think that is part of it. I also think a number of people were put off by the involvement of Jay Z. Further I think focusing the film on this Clarence character instead of a biblical character hurt as well. They should have made the film about Judas. Some of the directors comments during interviews may have hurt as well. He has said a few times that the film is not about Jesus at all.

It's an interesting movie but it's kind of all over the place. The actors... FANTASTIC! There are literally so many african americans actors, French Omar Sy, British David Oyelowo and Marianne Jean-Baptiste and so many more. My nitpick is one minute it wanted to be taken serious, then it wanted to be played for laughs. One minute, Clarence acting like a stoner and the next time he's serious. Then, he's blames his brother but how is that possible when they... I won't spoil it. Ugh, I wanted to loved it more but I enjoy it... 7.6/10🙂

Watch some of old, white biblical movies like The Ten Commandments and similar movies of the late 1940s-1960s. You're understand the zooming in & out or blackening of things around. Watch Passion of The Christ to understand white Jesus (Benedict Cumberbatch's role) and Judas. Great review perspective, you have a new subscriber in me.

I didn't love it I didn't hate it. There were things I liked and things I didn't. It's a conversation piece. Whether it's good or not depends on the individual....their beliefs, biblical knowledge, taste, etc. The story as a whole was not blasphemous...but there are characters who don't believe who say & do blasphemous things in their disbelief. Some believers may have a hard time getting through some parts of the movie due to this. There were some messages trying to be pushed. I liked the soundtrack, the acting, the beautiful black cast, costumes, & the unique perspective it had....so it was worth it for those reasons... Tonally the movie is alil over the place, some missing aspects in character development, & some character interactions that were left a bit flat.... so there are moments I'm like what is the point of this.

I saw it last night and it had so many powerful moments in the movie. Seeing all the black characters made me feel good and making the Romans white was cinematic genius. I think whenever we say or jesus is black people are in a uproar but we can watch all the old white biblical movies like 10 commandments but never question the actors who looked comical to me when I was younger.

I found this movie to be much more than I thought it would be. It touch all of my emotions, and moved my spirit. I am so glad I purchased the DVD. Now I can watch it over and over again. I found this to be a excellent movie, with the perfect actors to play each part. Great job all. Thank you very much. 🙏🏾🕊⚡️
