A couple of big hitters I somehow completely forgot to mention: Sally Rooney- Intermezzo Benjamin Myers- Rare Singles

I am so happy you have Amma on your list, its a brilliant, beautiful book & New Zealand has so many great books/authors but often get no love

I'd be shocked if James doesn't make the list. I'm currently reading Long Island and have Blackouts on deck. I also have Orbital and Ghost Mountain on my cart. I can't wait for Tell Me Everything....love Elizabeth Strout. I'm off to investigate the rest of your wishlist. Booker excitement activated!

Oh nice! I think you’ve probably hit a good amount of the longlist there (here’s hoping!) And yes! It’s coming!

I'm not a big Everett fan, but I would be surprised if James was not on the longlist (or the shortlist). It really was very good. I was going to mention Clear by Carys Davies which you mentioned near the end. Also Richard Powers has a new book coming out in September, it just sneaks into the eligibility window. One of the joys of the Booker longlist is those titles I have never heard of, so I will look forward to those as yet unknown books.

Yes! I just finished Clear the other day, and it really snuck up on me! Oh gosh, how did I forget Richard Powers! But yes, excited for those unexpected ones!

I think I will be a little surprised if Praiseworthy and James are not longlisted but who knows - I am just glad they are out there to read! My dark horse for the longlist is The Maniac by Benjamin Labatut - he was shortlisted a couple of years ago for the Booker Translated prize (aka International) but this one was written in English and published early October last year - and is amazing!
@ianp90862 ай бұрын
Actually though I just checked and the UK publication might have been September so not eligible

Ahh, I had forgotten about The Maniac! I feel like people last year wrote it off because it would be eligible for this year, so it would be great to see it make it if it is eligible.

So excited that it's booker season again! Yours is the first predictions video I've seen. I'm hoping for more of a debut list this year. But there's an unbelievable amount of well-established/previously longlisted authors with eligible books this year! Shaping up to be a great reading year

Clicked as soon as I saw this appear!! I can’t wait to read Amma. Definitely on my wishlist so if it gets listed for the Booker it will bump it up even quicker. I would also like to see The Lost Love Songs of Boysie Singh by Ingrid Persaud. Just because I loved Love After Love so so much. You picked loads of great books Bob!! Can’t wait to see what makes it!!

Question 7 really blurs the line between fiction and non fiction, if it makes it, it might be a bit controversial. Loved hearing your thoughts on this. I hope you get a few wrong, only because I enjoy a few surprises.

I'd be very happy to read every single book on your wishlist! I've only read James and Martyr, and really enjoyed and admired both . Oh, and Orbital, which is such a lovely meditation on our planet. I now have a copy of Praiseworthy and have been circling around it, just waiting for the right moment to begin. Maybe I'd trade our the Strout for Benjamin Myers, although I know nothing about Rare Singles. I just adore his work and think he deserves more attention. Well Done! I hope we get some good surprises too! PS I ...did not know Bookerer meant... Bookerer . :)

Oh yes, I’d love to see Benjamin Myers on it- I’m excited for that one. I can’t believe I forgot about that book when I was making the list! Aha, Bookerer is mostly from Booker, but I also just liked that it had ‘book’ in it and sounded awkward to say 😂

Thanks for the video, Bob. Regardless of getting longlisted or not, I’ll take this as a good highly-curated recommendation that should keep me busy for the year, provided I manage to find those limited indie releases here.

I have acquired Martyr in that it was part of a subscription and immediately thought oh no not for me. Now I suppose I should read it.I have Praiseworthy, not yet read and Caledonian Road, not yet read. Why am I here. I should be reading! I loved Strange Flowers by Donal Ryan so would like to follow his other titles. I especially enjoyed David Nicholls, you are here. Stayed up late to finish it. Hopeless romantic I think. I have loved Hard by a Great Forest. Recommended to me because of where it is set an area I love and I own My Friends. So much reading so luckily is it my greatest joy. That was interesting that former winners are automatically eligible. Did not know that. Thanks Bob have a new list of titles to follow up. Even if your list of possibles do not make the long list you have alerted us all to many possible great reads. For that we say thank you!

So many good books out in this prize window. Martyr and James are probably my favorites, but (assuming I've got my dates correct) I'd love to see books like Let Us Descend by Jesmyn Ward, The Caretaker by Ron Rash, Brooklyn Crime Novel by Jonathan Lethem on the list. Loved Clear as well! It's easy to forget books when putting these things together, and I'm only talking about books I've read. You've mentioned a lot of books I'm excited to read, as well!

Unfortunately Richard Flanagan's Question 7 isn't eligible as it's not fiction. It is supposed to be amazing, and is on my TBR. I would of course like to see another Australian writer make the longlist. Maybe Alexis Wright, but I find her intimidating. I'd love to see Claire Kilroy's Soldier Sailor on the longlist if the publication date fits the range. I'm still thinking about it, I hope to reread it at some stage and I think it will be a favourite of mine. Oh I just checked, I think it was too early in the year. I just read it this year, so it feels more recent to me. I think I'm going to start James on audio today without knowing anything about Huckleberry Finn. I'd love to see Orbital on the longlist too, I've bought the hype and bought the book...
@BobTheBookerer2 ай бұрын
Ahh, I hadn’t realised- thank you! And yes, the lack of Aussie representation on the lists has been odd (although I saw an article that suggested publication dates and processes were the issues, as in aiming for US markets made their dates line up awkwardly for the Booker and therefore inelegible). Oh yes! I think Soldier Sailor was eligible for last year, which is sad that it didn’t appear!

These thirteen I recently predicted: Sharlene Allsopp / The Great Undoing Paul Auster / Baumgartner Rachel Khong / Real Americans Lisa Ko / Memory Piece Hisham Matar / My Friends Mike McCormack / This Plague of Souls Chigozie Obioma / The Road to the Country Ingrid Persaud / The Lost Love Songs of Boysie Singh Catherine Prasifka / This Is How You Remember It Sunjeev Sahota / The Spoiled Heart Anna Smaill / Bird Life Colm Toibin / Long Island Alexis Wright / Praiseworthy Short Story collections should be eligible I feel.
@rhyst1242 ай бұрын
**I also read somewhere that the publishers of Praiseworthy (risky business on their behalf) was in contention for the longlist.
@BobTheBookerer2 ай бұрын
@@rhyst124 Oh this would be a fantastic longlist! Hoping you’re right on at least a good deal of these! The Sharlene Allsopp is one I hope is eligible if there is a UK publisher for it (I couldn’t find one when I ordered the book, but it sounds fantastic!) A few here I’ve not heard of so I’m very excited to dig into them!

And short stories on the list would be a fun addition. I think the IB is often stronger for them, and otherwise, short story writers kind of fall down the gaps in most prizes.

Ooh, you've managed to get me excited for the Booker now. There really are so many good options this year. I wasn't enthusiastic about last year's list (or this year's International Booker) but I feel like there's a decent chance that this year's regular Booker will be more "me". Although you never know what they'll do 🤪 Btw, have you seen the list of finalists for the Orwell Prize for political fiction? It it is fantastic and has several of the books you've mentioned.

Aha, the season has started! Yeah, last year’s was a bit of a letdown for me, but optimistic for this year. I have seen the Orwell! I’d read 5.5 by the time the list was released, and they were all books I enjoyed, so I’m very excited for the rest!

Yes! It’s interesting, although we never know what they actually submitted in the end, so it’s difficult to know what missed out, though we can often guess! (It’s much easier to guess when lots from one publisher makes it on to the longlist, because then you know what maybe wasn’t submitted).
