I like how this is kinda based on actual events. 9 Months before Rosa Parks made her name in history, A 15 year old girl by the name of Claudette Colvin refused to move to the back of the bus, which prompted not only arrest, but the bus operators and police made many lewd and sexually abusive comments towards her body. The NAACP did not want Colvin to be the face of the bus protests because she was 15 years old, Pregnant, and wasn’t “fair skinned”. One of the reasons why the NAACP became so prominent in the civil rights movement was due to their emphasis on Respectability politics and presenting the most acceptable and palatable form of black empowerment to the middle-upper class White politicians. As a consequence of this, the lighter skinned, older, working woman, Rosa Parks became a symbol of protest and the defiance of white supremacy while Claudette Colvin was left as a footnote
@isaacstevens47310 ай бұрын
I learned about Claudette when I was in 8th grade and again on Drunk History
@FatAlbertFanClub10 ай бұрын
Most know about her now though, I think most curriculums mention her, at least they did when I was in school, pretty messed up that true defiance was stomped out by planned defiance.
@InvadeNormandy8 ай бұрын
Fun fact, Rosa parks literally kept doing it over and over waiting for it to happen as they were a known political agitator prior.
@aikalabe77196 ай бұрын
Claudette colvin was not pushed aside to make room for rosa parks, that is a myth. That episode of drunk history VASTLY exaggerates what actually happened. 1)Colvin was not pregnant when she was arrested. She did not become pregnant until months AFTER the NAACP had already dropped her case. 2)The primary reason Colvin's case got dropped was because the judge at the time chose not to charge her for violating segregation law, only charging her with assault of a police officer. Therefore there was no way for the defense to challenge the legality of Jim Crow segregation laws because colvin was not on trial for that crime. The NAACP was also concerned about her receiving harassment and death threats if they chose to make her the face of a boycott. As a child she would be ill equipped for that, rosa parks had been specifically trained on how to deal with targeted harrasment. 3)Rosa parks did not plan to get arrested that day nor did the NAACP instruct her to get arrested. They were looking for a spark to kickstart a major protest event, but Rosa Parks was not specifically handpicked to get arrested. She sat in the colored section, then refused to move when there was spillover from the whites only section and the bus driver moved the "colored" sign back a few rows. It was not preplanned or staged in any way. 4) in terms of respectability politics, rosa parks wasnt even that much "better" than claudette colvin. The naacp tried to play up the narrative that she was just a good christian lady with tired feet, but she wasnt particularly popular or influential in her own community. The fliers that the naacp distributed that night simply read "another black woman has been arrested on the bus". Parks isnt even mentioned by name. 5)the movement didnt forget about or discard colvin at all. She was later asked to testify in a segregation case, and this was after she'd been impregnated by a married man. At worst, parks was inspired by colvin's civil disobedience and saw an opportunity to do something similar at the time. But the idea that the plan was completely cribbed from colvin is ridiculous, cynical, and diminishing to the efforts of ordinary americans who participated in the civil rights movement. Not everyone gets to be famous. That's not why they were doing what they did.

This is funny on an even deeper level. Rosa Parks was part of a coordinated protests, it was not spur of the moment but planned and other people participated. But in pop culture she is the only one who is remembered.
@blazingbattlehawk96263 ай бұрын
It wasn't planned in advance. She was sitting in a row right behind the seats reserved for whites. It likely wasn't planned that far in advance as it would have to rely on the bus getting crowded and having a driver who thinks he has the right to move the line (it was a questionable law). Rosa was the only to hold her ground though
@ehellsword23 ай бұрын
No DumbIdeaPresented is correct. Rosa Parks not moving was a strategic move by her party to further move the Civil Rights movement along.

I have a feeling the whole thing was actually staged and even the bus driver was in on it somehow, but Rosa and the others deliberately kept Robert out of the loop because they all hated him and wanted to make him look like an idiot in front of everyone on the bus. And after all those years, Robert either never found out what really happened or he refused to admit that he got pranked during an important moment in American history.

*Claudette Colvin* was the name of one of many individuals passed over for Rosa Parks since she was a trained *lifelong activist* working for the NAACP before the bus incident. Rabbit hole gets worst to. Rosa Park's bus incident was revealed decades later from surviving folks involved that it was manufactured with help from media connections. Rosa and her Husband had driver's licenses and a car to boot.
