[The Boot Ally] Japan’s Iconic CLINCH Boots Are Coming to the US-Full Breakdown

This is a special video to commemorate the launch of CLINCH, the top niche boot brand from Japan, at Standard & Strange (Oakland, CA and Santa Fe, NM). The video is made by the four parties; CLINCH, Stitchdown.com, Standard & Strange and KZfaq channel “The Boot Ally”.
[CLINCH] is a brand of top quality leather boots and shoes made at BRASS Shoe. Co., Tokyo, Japan. BRASS has been known as one of the best shoe repair shops in Japan and the place that leather shoe aficionados brought their quality shoes and vintage boots to have them restored or customized. Seven years ago, the shop started its own brand under the name “CLINCH,” which quickly obtained the reputation as the top niche boots and shoes in Japan.

[Standard & Strange] originally opened in Oakland, California in 2012, and since have stood behind the statement “Buy Fewer, Better Things.” The store has an outstanding selection of Americana gear, from denim and boots to outerwear and accessories. Standard & Strange has long had a special focus on Japanese brands. The owners travelled all over Japan to discover unique brands and products that fit their incredibly high standard. They have recently opened a new store in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Michiya Suzuki, the former General Manager of Red Wing Japan Ltd., started the Boot Ally KZfaq channel to introduce high quality, unique boot brands and shops from Japan. The Japanese heritage boot market is at an outstanding level of maturity, but many such boot brands are niche and small, and therefore not well known. For the moment, Boot Ally videos are in Japanese, but are also being translated into English for a global audience. I think this store may be closed. I went there Sat. 6th FEB and the shelves were very bare. They would not allow anyone in even though their website said they were open. I was on my way home after shopping and had a store bag from a well respected shoe store which the chap inside clearly noticed. So many stores, restaurants and hotels in the Asakusa area have shut down due to the Covid 19 pandemic. I hope they can continue making their super boots. I wish them success in these tough times.

Thank you for your comment. The store inow closed on Wednesday and Thursday although their workshop is running on everyday except Thursday. Their workshop is increasing busy recently and they have less resources to spare for their retail activities (store, mostly). I would recommend to call them before visiting. Thank you.

Hello Michiya San, I hope all is well with you in Japan and that you are safe. Will you be making more videos? I am curious about your collection and recent interests. I hope many of these great boot makers in Japan will be alright with the economic downturn coming down on all of us. No, it's not. It's the opposite. You can't categorize them as being just "Japanese boots" as this particular designer/cobbler is heavily influenced by English boot making. But with meticulous attention to detail and top notch craftsmanship. Not to mention best of the best quality materials used to craft each individual boots. Yes, there are a few individuals in japan with small shops that will craft beautiful boots. However, I look at it, as a best customization of English/American boots combined. His love for true vintage English boots are evident. with "Japanese Craftsmanship" which is one of the best in the world. No, It's not for everyone. He's also said, "although my design is rather traditional and classic, but with the lost method of using hand, as well as machine-aided craft, you may feel the difference as you wear them" I appreciate his dedication and execution to intricate details, and to articulate his vision, is such a beautiful thing. And to re-live the True Vintage feel is amazing. Again, it's not for everyone.
