Vangelis helped make the movie with his soundtrack. Very close to sounds of Bladerunner a few yrs before but still Classic! What a great time to make this movie and it seemed the world was more tame in the early 80’s.

Hopkins as Bligh - supperb performance, among best acting performances ever IMHO. He actually gets red in face when he reprimands DD Lewis character after the unsuccessful navigation of the Horn. Plus other fantastic scenes with him.

The most historically accurate BOUNTY movie to date. Bligh was a unpleasant character but nowhere near the over the top sadist of the 1935 and 1962 movie versions.

The best and more realistic of The Bounty movies. Fletcher was no hero and Blight was no villain. Hollywood did a great disservice to history and Captain Blight’s family Gable’s & Brando’s versions. It’s silly to think that the critics were expecting more of the same. It was dismissed and both Gibson and Hopkins have also shown some discontent on their interpretations but I think they are totally wrong. The director was right.

It could be a sequel based on true events. Those events could going on Cap Edward Edwards and The HMS PANDORA who was committed to seek and prosecute the mutieeniers. They had failed and the ship sank over the pacific ocean. the survivors scaping into boat Edwards was court-martialed in 1792

I love a film that transports me to another place and time the way this one did. The cast is great but Anthony Hopkins is submerged in his Bligh character and dominates every scene he's in. Vangeli's music is icing on this cake.

I'm shocked and appalled i only just saw this movie recently and it was fantastic. Young mel gibson, Daniel day lewis, liam neeson, hopkins. Just incredible. Oh and the soundtrack is awesome!

Brilliant movie. It was a combination of circumstances and a clash of personalities that caused the mutiny. It's probably as close to the truth as a movie will ever come.

i love this movie and watch it once a month. i was surprised to read that Hopkins called it a mess. It was one of his best performances.

It's not a surprise Hopkins or Mel keep a distance from it; even Vangelis REFUSED to release the OST to the market for his being "non commercial"/ schtick that drove his dance with the record industry the whole run. Begging for the soundtrack to be re released now seems redundant; but someone may choose to do it. I'd buy it, but not for silly-money. Vangelis was really the greatest part in the film, as well as the cinematographer/ & Director Roger/ and the ocean/ skys. Other directors had problems really acknowledging the achievements of Vangelis; the Academy did... almost refusing Chariots; Preferring proper scoring etc. Hopkin's role was probably a harder ask than Mel's, add to that what was demanded of them. Hopkins was probably looking at the prior performances on tape already. Someone can dive for the interviews... or maybe scour this one again.

Needless to say, 1984’s The Bounty was a flop for Orion Pictures and that could have been bringing Roger Donaldson for saving time and money to get this film done as director and finally it has been one of the most cult classics of all time.

Since its beginning on February 20, 1981, veteran Australian filmmaker Roger Donaldson arrives in Hollywood for the first time when he was directing Orion's The Bounty with Oscar winners Mel Gibson Sir Anthony Hopkins and Daniel Day-Lewis. Opens in theaters on August 3, 1984 during the 1984-1985 fall season. Filled with lots of action, energy, grace and sensuality.

Any movie with Daniel Day Lewis in it, is, by definition, a great movie - The Bounty being no exception. Wonderful work! Timeless, I'd argue. In it's way, it's up there with great movies like Master & Commander, and other sea epics, many of them half it's age.

I love Master & Commander to death, but there is one line reading where I swear Russell Crowe is straight up mimicking Anthony Hopkins as Captain Bligh. That film probably owes a great deal to The Bounty.

It's true that The Bounty pushes back against the (hitherto) casting of Bligh as the wicked and tyrannical character, and is a lot more ambivalent. (And fairer to the historical records as such exist). And my god, the acting is amazing! Hopkins particularly.

They spend $4 million US dollars in 1983 to build a replica of The Bounty. The real bounty cost $2500 pounds sterling in 1787 ($126,543.44 US Dollars in 1983). So, they spent around 30 times more than the ship actually cost when she was bought, even by 1787 standards (around 76,888.38 pounds sterling in 1787).

I don't know which one was a greater feat, the survival of Apollo 13 or Bligh's +3000 mile voyage in the 23-foot boat.

Both events are insane. You must remember that Bligh voyage was in XVIII century, he traveld 3000miles without any modern technologies like GPS. On the other hand we have Apollo 13, obviously it was almost 200 years after Bligh, so astronauts were trapped in Apollo with communication with earth, with navigation tools, but the size of the Apollo voyage is also spectacular. Both events shows primal instinct - fighting for survive. Apollo astronauts and Bligh peoples can gave up - but they fought even if they situation was dramatic

This film was much closer to real life than the 1962 version as in that Trevor Howard as Bligh says he had never met Christian till he arrived at the boat a clear falsehood.

That island is Tubuai south of Tahiti. The mutineers constructed a failed settlement named Fort George. The site of fort has a memorial plaque marking the spot and a partial reconstruction of the fort.

Edward Fox's character Captain Greetham seems to have had a dislike of Lt. Bligh. After all Lieutenant Bligh failed in his mission to introduce breadfruit to Jamaica.

This film was the most realistic of all versions because it shows Fletcher C. as immature and of dubious ethicality. Earlier versions pant him a hero, but all he did was lose control of himself.

Not being a fan of Vangelis's work, his score for The Bounty is a strange one for me. It's haunting, melancholic and has a feeling of anxiety about it, but for some reason I'm very much drawn to it. It's actually got a strong John Carpenter vibe to it.

It kinda reminds me of the Jean-Michel Jarre score for Gallipoli (another Mel Gibson period film); both feel a bit anachronistic with the heavy use of synth, but somehow they totally work.

This movie would've been considered one of the greatest movies of all time if they had a more conventional soundtrack instead of Vangelis. The music sounds like an Atari game with lasers and whales

That’s a big 🧌 on Vangelis’ devotees; but expand … they did that to “The Big Blue” with Conti instead of the french soundtrack. Compare the two there; and research which won the day there. To me the opening/ closing/ out to sea are the features … perhaps hypnosis in music is not the right💡. Maybe Vangelis regrets it… he never released this music as an album 💿.

For the love of dog, Edward Fox is the very worst narrator/host I've ever witnessed. Of course this is a great story, but it's nearly ruined by the tired and unengaged deliveries of Mr. Fox.
