John Mayer had a new mystery pedal at the start of 2021, through tours with Dead and Company it would continue to appear and even on the Solo Tour pedalboard. Now we know exactly what is is and a potential future it has. The JHS Pedals Box It Later is one of the most interesting pedals we've seen John use over the past few years!

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Katana is in the loop. Josh has already gone on record explaining the Kirkland Signature. I would bet the Katana is in the loop creating the similar cascading gain stage John had in the Kirkland.

8:55 it seems to me that if you raise the brightness of the shot, you can make out the loop being just 1 cable going over the power cable. It looks like a continuous arch, so I’m rather sure that the loop is empty. Really informative video, Justin!

I bet the delays are in the loop so he can control the input so you dont overload them, contol the output post delays, and have the switch be at the front of the board. Thats how I would use it.

Dumbleator has the send and return jacks right next to each other with a switched jack on the send going to the tip. It then goes to the return jack tip. So with nothing in the loop the two jacks are basically hard wired to each other. This device has the jacks on either side of the enclosure so they probably decided to not use a switched jack for the send and use the cable plugged into the send and return instead.

I am so confused as to the practical use of this pedal haha I know you covered the uses in the video, and I understand the concept, but with boost pedals out there, and pedals with effect loops - and the line of pedals that SaturnWorks makes...I don't get the appeal. The Dumble one makes sense, sort of, maybe for the time it was released, but I don't know. I am not saying that John or Josh have no idea what they're doing, but it's still very odd to me.

A "Dumble" loop switcher pedal would be so fucking funny. You would seriously have to be a rube to buy this.

Say you have a pedal like an octave fuzz that has a volume drop, and you want to boost it to fit your taste, but don’t want to have to toggle for both pedals all the time. Put it in the effects loop here and then you just have to click once. Because you can dial gain before and after the loop, you could also do the same with a pedal that you wanted to drive harder every time you used it.

If the cable is just a loop cable why wouldn’t he just ask Josh to make one without the loop? Maybe the Boss looper is in the pedal so he can easily control the input/output volume, or maybe it controls something off the board?

I've been an evangelist for "reprocessing" of stereo pedals or a few years now. This involves taking the output of one channel on a stereo (2 ins, 2 outs) pedal, and feeding it to the "other" channel to be reprocessed. In some instances, it works great right off, while in others it can sometimes result in oscillation if there is a bit of boost to that first channel output. Look for "Reprocessing of a stereo effect" here for a demonstration. Perhaps the Box It Later is simply a general-purpose device for doing such tricks and anticipating/ameliorating oscillation risks.

Until John Mayer actually speaks about it in public we can only take a guess.. 😅 My guess is that he wants to control a pedal output gain or control a pedal input from getting slammed to hard. He stacks a lot of gain, he’s using digital pedals further down the signal path, perhaps is to protect the input of the delay/reverb section from clipping. The higher the gain/amplitude, the more effect of the reverb/delay you’ll get. By the looks of it, he doesn’t run those TS10s and Klon very low on volume/level.

Someone on the Mayer subreddit posted a video from Crossroads 2019 of John playing a solo electric version of Slow Dancing, and just before the solo he steps on what looks like the Box It Later with black duct tape on it. I was unable to find the video on KZfaq.

Wouldn’t be a Box It Later he didn’t have one on his board, only thing black was the Klon!

Reckon the looper is in the loop? Same patch plugs where as others gold connectors, and it might help with the tone of the replays?

The one good thing about this is I feel Josh from JHS wouldn’t make so few it’s unobtainiom right away (Assuming it gets released, notaklon style) I hope

The key is whats Not on the board... no Solo Dallas Schaeffer/style pedal. This replaced it with some form of specialized routing or parallel loop function. Or possibly just a fake loop to mess with people... the world may never know😊

Looks very similar to the 29 pedals EUNA or OAMP, line driver with a loop for things that you don’t want buffered. As said above, just makes things sound better. A well made, cheaper version by JHS would be pretty sweet.

I was watching a jhs live and asked Josh for the Box It Later schematic and he acknowledged me look up the past live stream episode 3 turning an electro Harmonix boost into distortion at the 1.17hour and 25 sec mark he said he's tempted to make it. He claims he looked at the schematic. I build effects and asked Josh to make it for everyone

I wonder if it's more like- why take the rare thing on the road when Josh Scott would be willing to remake the original? Like yes of course he tours with rare things all the time, but if there are less than ten on the planet, might be he doesn't want to risk anything happening to it at all.
