I stumbled on this video, I was there that day back on July 28, 2001. I worked a couple of blocks from the World Trade Center and came on over to hear them for this concert at lunch. Little did I know at the time that six weeks later, the trade center would be no longer. I even have a few pictures from that day, I just bought a new digital camera and was trying it out.

1967 "The Letter" is a song written by Wayne Carson that was first recorded by the American rock band the Box Tops in 1967.

Is this the same guy that did this song in the late 60s ? One of my favorites. I am now in my 60s and still remember every word. It was big here in Australia. Still bloody love it.

@sharyndoyle6362, as already stated, yes, that’s Alex Chilton. There’s a whole story behind “the voice” that he used on the smash #1 hit of 1967. Take the deep dive. Alex’s is an interesting story.

I’m just getting into Alex Chilton’s music. I don’t understand why he was pegged as such a grumpy guy. In almost every video I’ve seen he looks happy to be there, and engaged generously with the audience. Seemed like a nice and gracious guy.

Whaaaat? I just realized the same Alex chilton of big star was in this band. That’s crazy. But yeah his music is amazing. Covers so much ground

the letter video videoers are signaling the band to smile
@jeffvargon Жыл бұрын
@@hobbygamer6220 Actually I took a number of still photos at that gig and Alex was smiling most of the time. He did have his moments when he could be temperamental, but then again doesn't everyone?

@@jeffvargon what was the event ? It looks like it might be a festival
@jeffvargon Жыл бұрын
@@hobbygamer6220 That was an outdoor performance at the former site of the Twin Towers in New York City. It was their third there in three years, although the one in 2000 had gotten rained out. Even so, other than one (out of five) Box Tops shows I was fortunate enough to have attended, Alex was always cheerful during the shows, and it was only after the 1999 Coney Island High gig that due to an argument he'd gotten into with one of the other band members, outside after that one he was a bit abrupt when spoken too. Out of all of those I'd seen him perform at (and there were dozens) he seemed to enjoy those with the Box Tops the most.

Actually he was asked to sung in a raspy manner on the record, that's his natural voice
@Anotherroom3 жыл бұрын
All of these response are incorrect. The Box Tops or their record label (can't remember which - probably the label) said they wanted a "black sounding singer." The band saw Alex singing with some garage band and asked him to join. That was just how he sang back then.

Thanks for posting! I saw that show and remember Alex Chilton was really hamming it up. Should've tried to meet him when he was smoking Marlboro reds offstage after the show. I really didn't know anything about his musical career other than Big Star, so I didn't want to put him off. I'm pretty sure the Troggs played that pavilion that summer, too. (Didn't talk to Reg Presley, either.) Can't remember if they did "With a Girl Like You."

Big Star's Radio City album is in my top 10 of all time, right up there with The Beatles, The Who, The Stones, Miles Davis, etc. But it always strikes me funny that Alex seemed to enjoy himself more playing these Box Top shows than his Big Star reunion ones. I do know that he almost loathed playing Big Star songs, yet he appears to still have a fondness for the Box Top stuff.
