This is so different from a typical cover. He did not try to sing it like Paul Simon did. He made it a Mark Knopfler song. He owned the song.

Mark Knopfler in this voice...in this timing...in this stage of life gives meaning to this song and revives sentiments anew with an artistry gifted to so few. The pageantry of the Crown is so empty...but, Mark Knopfler finds the heart of a kingdom born on the shoulders of the common man's heart and soul who bled to make an island nation so powerful. The "Stirling Moss" of the guitar and a compass of life for all of us. Mark Knopfler has a "D-type" soul.

My lovely wife, Julie, bought us tickets to a Knopfler concert a decade ago. As if the concert wasn't good enough, there were dozens of father/son groups in attendance. Upon exiting, I asked some of the young masters what they thought about their father's taste in music and to a soul I was faced with incredulous wonder and amazement. There is hope.

MK's sure, gentle hands teased out the melodies and rhythms Paul Simon put there beautifully! Sadly, Paul's voice is fading- he's 70 and to damn much change , and it'is creeping up on both men. Mark has been a "musician's musician" for most of my life- and a wonderful way to spend an evening sailing on the clouds his fingers put to life. Play on!

This is absolutely fascinating. Its interesting that the lyrics of The Boxer contains several keywords that Knopfler had used in several of his previous songs including his Dire Straits days. Things like Poor Boy Blues, Railway Stations, Boxers (sonny liston), Whore (Stand Up Guy). New York City (Do America). Going Home (namesake) This list goes on. What evident is that the lyrical geniuses Simon , Garfunkel and Knopfler have the similar comprehension and ideas on lyric formation resulting in spectacular songs. This is an amazing rendition.
@agross12345
@agross12345 5 жыл бұрын
Mark's lyrics must always be studied as a whole. Much "intertextuality." His social sensitivity to the working class and the deprived and general social injustice runs through his entire career. To mention a few: Telegraph Road, Sonny Liston, Mighty Man, Get Lucky and many more. It is one of the main reason for people to love the man beyond his genius in writing lyrics, composing, fantastic musicality and, of course, playing.
@MarvaGrossman
@MarvaGrossman 5 жыл бұрын
@@agross12345 I agree! Listening to his songs, I have several times thought I could write a seminar paper on any one of several themes - which is pretty strange, considering I always say I don't really understand the academic study of art at all (I'm more the empirical sciences type). But I already have titles like: "The Unappreciated Artist in the Songs of Mark Knopfler: From the Sultans of Swing to Basil and Beryl". Or: "Economic Changes of the 1980s in Popular Song on Both Sides of the Atlantic: "Industrial Disease" and "Telegraph Road" vs. "Allentown" and "The Downeaster Alexa"" (...I'm also a fan of Billy Joel, but really, there are some shared themes here.)
@agross12345

Great idea! I thought about it as well. I'd be surprised if there is no Masters dissertation in literature in a UK university on MK. There could be also a forum for analysis of specific songs/poems. Another (biographical) question is what are the roots of MK's social sensitivity. I have a hunch.
