All in Nature is interconnected: all processes are interactive. The brain and the world (which it exists to bring into being for us) are no exceptions to this. Our brains mould the world and the world moulds our brains. Given the capacity for each hemisphere to attend to the world differently, and therefore make some aspects of the world stand forward at the expense of others, different cultures may come to emphasise different ‘takes’ on the world. I will consider some ways in which this has worked itself out historically in the West, and whether seeing this can help us get a new perspective on what we see happening around us in the world today.
Dr McGilchrist is a Psychiatrist and Writer, who is committed to the idea that the mind and brain can be understood only by seeing them in the broadest possible context. He has published original research and contributed chapters to books on a wide range of subjects, as well as original articles in papers and journals, including the British Journal of Psychiatry, American Journal of Psychiatry, The Wall Street Journal, The Sunday Telegraph, and The Sunday Times. He has taken part in many radios and TV programmes, documentaries, and podcasts, among them dialogues with Jordan Peterson, David Fuller of Rebel Wisdom, and philosopher Tim Freke.
His books include Against Criticism, The Master and his Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World, The Divided Brain and the Search for Meaning, and Ways of Attending. He published his latest book: The Matter With Things, a book of epistemology and metaphysics. You can keep up to date with his work at channelmcgilchrist.com

There are so very few thinkers that inspire such silence in me......usually I am too busy trying to swallow my counter arguements. His approach seems so humble and inclusive of all human activity rather than reductionary, as so many theories must be simply in order to be firmed.

The requirements of Islam in inclining toward use of the right hand side of the body and reading/writing the Quran among other requirements of Islam, for example the prayer which is essentially NLP, would lead to the changes on an individual and mass scale that I think you are referring to

It's about disciplining the nafs (animalistic ego-self - nafs amarra) - which is believed to be connected with the left brain.... hence using the right hand for acts of worship, including eating if you can - eating is an act of worship if you say a prayer before as that would be nourishment, God willing.. So active disciplining of the left hemisphere from the right hemisphere higher reasoning, implies it needing to be active as it's about leading it by example, training.... Doesn't that make sense.. In Islam the ego-self has levels.. they are about training..training a wild animal of sorts essentially..and this requires active discipline..
@rmurphy81

@@HN-po7lo yeah no doubt it’s about leading and disciplining it as you say. But if you were to make it dominate, which I guess you’re trying to say by saying making it active. I think maybe it would dominate the individual. And it should be lead by the right hemisphere making the left (nafs) subservient. I actually wondered if the right was somehow connected to the Rooh. I once heard a scholar say the brain is like an antenna for consciousness. Different parts of it tuned in to different frequencies receiving different messages. For example like you alluded to the left hemisphere broadly speaking being connected to emotions and the desires, and that part receiving whispers (thoughts) from the Shatan.
@HN-po7lo
@HN-po7lo 2 жыл бұрын
@@rmurphy81 no not make it dominate. On the contrary..because it's about being under right brain leadership.. where revealed knowledge comes in. It needs to be under right brain leadership - discipline. So it's steared towards cleanliness of body and mind, subjugating waswas (satanic whispers), keeping desires under check. It's about training.. The nafs is quite an animal. Paraphrased - Ghazali on the human reality - angel, devil, pig and dog in one. Pig representing sensuality - dog hunger. He said the difference between philosophers and sufis is that the philosophers say - go and kill your pig and dog (kill your ego). Whereas Ghazali had said - no - if you kill your pig, how can you feel love? If you kill your dog, how can you gain your strength? So you have to purify - transform your pig into pure love and your hunger into pure aspiration. So that the pig and dog become your two wings to fly towards God. In Islam - ego has to be transmuted.

Good to see this as it’s close to my heart and studies I have engaged in for a little over 50yrs. I can most definitely concur with the findings, having been ambidextrous until forced/coerced to choose one hand. Against her twisted wishes, I chose to be left-hand dominant. I would question one part of the video; that on the slight twist and size differences in size… I would have to assume the vast majority of the brains examined for this will have been that of right-handed folk. Perhaps the twist and volume is reversed with a predominantly left-handed individual? It’s not something I’ve covered, but do wonder 💭

The most basic question needs to be answered, to avoid any confusion: when you refer to your own (or someone else's) "right" and "left" hemispheres, do you speak from your own perspective (as with hands), or from the perspective of a person facing you? Yes, the answer to this question can be determined from diagrams presented, but briefly addressing it early on would be useful.

I thought it was pretty clear myself.....right hemisphere of brain controls left hand and left hemisphere controls right. Maybe he just assumes that it is common knowledge for anyone that gives him a listen.

Viewing the 'history' of brain development from the vantage point of Western culture makes some sense, however, the antiquity of the Sanskrit language pretty much shoots some major holes in this other, Western perspective.

Division is dual to unity, the divided brain implies duality! The left hemisphere is dual to the right hemisphere -- duality is the origin of the two hemispheres of the brain. The lordship (master) is dual to the bondsman (slave) -- the Hegelian dialectic. The Master and his Emissary is actually based upon the Hegelian dialectic. Thesis is dual to anti-thesis creates the converging thesis or synthesis -- the time independent Hegelian dialectic. Being is dual to non being creates becoming -- Plato. Alive is dual to not alive -- the Schrodinger's cat superposition. Schrodinger's cat is based upon Hegel's (Fichte) cat and he stole it from Plato who got it from the Socratic method of dialectic argument! It is important because it leads to the 4th law of thermodynamics:- Syntropy (prediction) is dual to increasing entropy. "Always two there are" -- Yoda. Duality creates reality. Mind (the internal soul, syntropy) is dual to matter (the external soul, entropy) -- Descartes. The mind/soul is dual according to Descartes and Hegel.

Interesting. Chirality, also being a prominent feature in nature via organic chemistry (amino acids, enzymes, sugars etc) and also electromagnetism, mathematics and physics.
@hyperduality2838
@hyperduality2838 2 жыл бұрын
@@AlexGullen Chirality is dual to helicity -- the Higgs Boson. Symmetry breaking as in the Higgs Boson is dual. Symmetric wave functions (Bosons, waves) are dual to anti-symmetric wave functions (Fermions, particles -- wave/particle or quantum duality or the spin statistics theorem (standard model). Bosons are dual to Fermions -- atomic duality! DNA or the double helix should actually be called the dual Helix, the code of life is storing information in the form of duality. DNA (replication) is dual to amino acids (catalysts) -- RNA is a good replicator and a good catalyst. Thesis (DNA) is dual to anti-thesis (Amino acids, enzymes) synthesize RNA -- Hegel. Male is dual to Female synthesizes children or offspring -- biological sex is based upon the Hegelian dialectic. Electro is dual magnetic -- Maxwell's equations. Null vectors or light rays are perpendicular to themselves from our perspective -- self duality. Pure energy or light rays is duality, energy is duality, duality is energy. Potential energy is dual to kinetic energy -- Gravitational energy is dual, electro- magnetic energy is dual. The Golden ratio or Fibonnaci sequence spirals or diverges outwards whist at the same time it converges to a number. Divergence (entropy) is dual to convergence (syntropy). The point duality theorem is dual to the line duality theorem -- universal hyperbolic geometry. Anything which is dual to entropy is by definition the 4th law of thermodynamics! Thinking is a syntropic process -- concepts are dual to percepts, the mind duality of Immanuel Kant. Mathematicians and physicists make new concepts all the time and they use these concepts to make optimized predictions -- a syntropic process -- teleological. Science has the goal or target to obtain a deeper understanding or reality and this is a teleological or syntropic process -- evidence of duality.

I do like his work, it has great merit for today's time. I return to it time and again. However, his generalizations about Art, completely ignores Art from Mohenjo-daro and Harrapan Art. With the beginning of Art in South Asian small sculptures indicate something other than what he purports. There too are seals which indicate currency, trade, ownership, and a written script. Approximately 3000 BCE or even earlier perhaps. Another mystery yet to be unravelled.
