Ford has unveiled a new interpretation of the classic Capri, but this time as an electric SUV. While the name may evoke memories of the iconic sports coupe, the new Capri shares little resemblance to its predecessor
The new Capri's tall-riding, five-door body shape is a far cry from the long-bonneted, two-door coupe of the past. The electric powertrain also marks a significant departure from the gasoline-powered performance of the original.
Ford has tapped into its existing electric platform, shared with Volkswagen, to create the Capri. The underpinnings of the new vehicle are based on the Explorer, with similar doors, bonnet, and bumpers.
Inside, the Capri mirrors the Explorer with a neat and well-made cabin. The 14.6-inch portrait touchscreen takes center stage and offers a unique 'secret' storage area. Other notable features include a 17-liter central storage bin and spacious rear seats.
At launch, the Capri will be offered in two 'Extended-range' versions, with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The rear-wheel drive model produces 284bhp and offers a range of 390 miles, while the all-wheel drive variant generates 336bhp and accelerates from 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds with a range of 368 miles.
While driving impressions are yet to be shared, Ford claims that the Capri will have a slightly more sporting suspension setup than the Explorer.
