The whole idea behind Gukurahundi was to destroy ZAPU because it was perceived to be a threat to ZANU PF rule. They actual targeted ex-combatants after demobilizing them because they thought intergratting them to Zim National Army was going to cause danger, they would stage a coup and to let them free after demobilizing them not knowing what they were up to, they would re-group and fight against the ZANU government, so kill them. That was bad, whoever advised Mugabe to take that route was a devil. But what surprises me now is that you find same people voting ZANU today, why?

The reason for the brigade formation was to rid country of Zapu which was perceived as a threat. The two PFs had failed to come together in the war under one leadership. Even during the war there conflicts btwn Zanla and Zipra. But the major contributing factor to the atrocities was the emergence of dissidents who were sponsored by apartheid SA after independence. The dissidents were supplied by SA as the UK and exRhodesians supported SA in its destabilisation campaign. Straight after independence the gvt could not take on SA head on militarily so instead they turned to Zapu support bases in matabeleland and Midlands. This was because majority Zapu supporters were Ndebele. The Ndebele population was accused of harbouring dissidents and hence their fate. Initially it wasn't about tribe but due to default supporter bases Ndebeles became targets. We need to acknowledge that a lot of Shona sympathizers were also victims of atrocities at that time. Shona people were misinformed that dissidents were sent by Zapu. The most powerful players paid a blind eye to what was happening. Rhodesians were in charge economically and they said nothing and watched. They actually wanted a civil war and helped SA destabilise Zim and later through supporting Renamo and Unita. The British and Americans supported their fellow white folks in SA and Rhodesia as they feared communism. It was never Shona vs Ndebele but because of the way the campaign was conducted it looked that way. Today a lot of Ndebele hate Shonas because of the dreaded 5th Brigade. Some people are deliberately inciting hatred by claiming it was a Shona vs Ndebele conflict. Let's not the same mistake.
