A dharma talk and discourse on the 16 steps involved in anapanasati mindfulness of breathing.
Seekers of goodness who have gathered here please listen in peace. Listening to the Dhamma in peace means to listen with a one-pointed mind, paying attention to what you hear and then letting go. Listening to the Dhamma is of great benefit. While listening to the Dhamma we are encouraged to firmly establish both body and mind in samadhi, because it is one kind of dhamma practice. In the time of the Buddha people listened to Dhamma talks intently, with a mind aspiring to real understanding, and some actually realized the Dhamma while listening.
"You say that you are too busy to meditate. Do you have time to breathe? Meditation is your breath. Why do you have time to breathe but not to meditate? Breathing is something vital to peoples lives. If you see that Dharma practice is vital to your life, then you will feel that breathing and practising the Dharma are equally important."
Don't think that only sitting with the eyes closed is practice. If you do think this way, then quickly change your thinking. Steady practice is keeping mindful in every posture, whether sitting, walking, standing or lying down. When coming out of sitting, don't think that you're coming out of meditation, but that you are only changing postures. If you reflect in this way, you will have peace. Wherever you are, you will have this attitude of practice with you constantly. You will have a steady awareness within yourself.

I am turning 80 and doing dedicated Meditation practice for only less than two years before just becoming aware of Thanissaro Bhikkhu's writings and guided meditations. He/you have been a breath of the freshest air, the dust cleansing rain regarding clarifying The Path and how to go forward with mindfulness of breathing, step-by-step with cautions about & methods to work around the obstacles & detours. I have no presumptions of having enough days, hours, moments to reach awakening during the lifetime of this aggregate -- but with this calm, clear direction I believe I can perhaps proceed more skillfully. Thank you so much!Tom RuskDresden, ME

In my experience, the breath is not just air. The breath flows thru the channels in the body and moves within us. It is a subtle breath. It does fill the whole body. So, in my limited experience, it may be quite literal. Feel the body breath. Hope this helps. Peace.

Yes when the Buddha said be with the body it’s actually the breathe IN the body. But the whole body just meant the whole breathe

In "With Each And Every Breath", Thanissaro advises, in "Visions and Other Uncanny Phenomena, "If (during meditation) you sense that you're outside your body, you may feel tempted to travel around a bit on the ASTRAL PLANE, but you should resist the temptation. There are dangers there, and meanwhile you're leaving your body unprotected." I've never even HEARD a conservative teacher mention "the astral plane". So, is THAT the realm we first enter when we die? WHEN we enter it unexpectedly and unprepared, at death, WHAT IS THE ADVICE for being within the astral realm, with no chance of going back to the body ???

Vipasanna the breath that leads to nibanna. How you experience nibanna and jhanna adsobtion? For vipasanna meditators, upon the last moment of your vipasanna maturity, your mind will be momentarily free from greed, hatred, delusions. In the that single moment, your will experience the last noble truth, that is you will experience the path that leads to the end of sufferings. For vipasanna practioner that moment when mind is purified the end of sufferrings occurs when your mind shuts down similarly like you are unconcious but your sitting meditation posture are adsorbed in jhanna adsobtion in erect sitting meditation posture which you will not know until you return from nibanna experience. That mean you are in jhanna adsobtion before enter and experience nibanna. Once ceesation of conciousness take over your vipasanna practice that moment you are disconnected from your inbreath, outbreath and that mean you are no more existing in samsara in that moment and you experience what is Nibanna. That experirnce of nibanna has nothing connected to this sensual samsara existence meaning there is no such things as happiness or sadness. Ceesation of conciousness means you have stop to exist in this nama rupa.So the 4th noble truth explain it to us as end of suffering. So ceesation of conciousness is similar to no mind,no body no nama rupa. One who experience this ceesation of conciousness now understand the 4 noble truth clearly and understand the difference between nibanna and samsara. This the moment when the disconnection of samsara existence occur when vipasanna mind purification is completely developed and the mind is purified and is free from greed, hatred and delusions. The vipasanna meditator will be in vipasanna sitting posture adsorbed in extreme pleasuable sensation at that moment of nibanna experience when conciousness cease. Everything happen very quickly but very clearly. When the mind cease he enter magga and phalla and he will not know. When he return from magga(14 vipasanna nana magga nana) Phalla(15 vipasanna nana phalla nana) he returns to this jhanna adsobtion body sitting in erect sitting meditation posture and still not knowing what had occured as he is in strong jhanna adsobtion. He is not concious of having a body and no hindrance at that time as jhanna adsobtion with extreme pleasure sensation are the object and he did not know existence of samsara(there is no Knowledge of samsara existence with a body and a mind ) After a while the jhanna adsobtion begin to subside and he begin to be aware of his primary object that is his inbreathing and outbreathing is so easy and does not need effort. And at this point he also can realise his sitting posture is erect and feel very relax and comfortable and accompany with happy feelings. Then suddenly he recollect(16 vipasanna nana arise paccavekkhana nana) there was a moment when his mind shuts down. He remember every things clear and he saw that moment there was a cut off and he experience nibanna. He see nibanna has nothing to do with samsara existences. He is now one who has experience the direct experience and tasted the meaning of the 4noble truth the ceesation of nama rupa where all suffering ends. He is now a stream entry one worthy of respect and is now an Ariya. The first time ceesation of conciousness one is a sotapanna. The second times ceesation of conciousness one is a sakadagami. The 3rd times ceesation of conciousness one is a anagami. The 4th time ceesation of conciousness, one is Arahat and he sees everything's clearly for the last time. This is why the Buddha say come and experiences it yourself and to come to know what i have know for the ending of all sufferrings.....nibanna. May all vipasanna meditators work digently in perfecting your vipasanna inbreath outbreath contemplation until the mind is fully purified. Suki hotu. Buddhang saranam gacchami.

Yes ur right. It isn’t the body. It’s the breathe. Ur so right. Buddha didn’t say the physical body, he meant feel the breathe in the body. But it’s just breathe yes.

When Buddha said, "whole body" I was told, it's not literal body, he calls the whole inhalation & exhalation as its body. But what's explained here is not exactly that I guess. Could someone elaborate? Thank you

@@simonsays525 I got it clarified by masters, when Buddha says whole body, it's definitely not the physical body. It's the whole inhalation & exhalation. Pali word "Kaya" means body, because Buddha used the word Kaya, people think it's the physical body. But it's not!
