This scene earned Sessue Hayakawa his Oscar nomination and, in my humble opinion, should’ve earned him the win.

In this great film I see Guiness as the perfect British Officer of his day. Yes, the empire was falling apart, and could never really be the way it was yet......Alec Guiness represented what I always thought a Brit officer should be....Loyal, compassionate to his men, and diciplined. A very rare commodity today.

One of my all time favorite movies despite it was made long before i was born. But.. The man playing colonel Saito steals every scene, plays so well together with Alec Guiness. True movie magic is not made by effects or camera work. But by people. Bridge Over The River Kwai is pure movie magic, because the people in it made it believable. Thank you whoever you are for posting :)

Another powerful scene from this great movie. Every line serves its purpose like the brush strokes in a great painting. Saito and Nicholson are each so well defined because they contrast so vividly. Saito is quite ready to kill N., isn't he? That won't get the bridge built. Irresistable force, vs immoveable object. Thanks Egdapa

Nicholson shouldd have said "None of my officer's will do manual labor unless, that is, I am in charge of building the bridge in which case I am sure they will volunteer to do manual labor. Cheers."

The man playing the Japanese general should have gotten a supporting actor Oscar. Brilliant acting on his part. Thanks for posting this scene.

Sessue Hayakawa was nominated for best supporting actor for this part but did not win the award. I agree he should have because he was a great actor and was outstanding in this role.

"I hate the British! You are defeated but you have no shame. You are stubborn but you have no pride. You endure but you have no courage. I hate the British!" Best Colonel Saito line. 5:26

Sessue Hayakawa (Col. Saito) deserved the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in this movie. These were real movies, not the computerized crap they show today. These were real actors. Too bad they are gone.

I think Colonel Saito was being very reasonable. Alec Guinness was just trying to get out of work

I guess they wanted to portray all the officers and Men to be in pretty poor shape. Which in reality, many were. Some wounded, some not. Some just malnourished, and beaten by guards for fun.
