With Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse coming out soon, I wanted to take a look at one of my favorite character designs ever and why it works so well. Also wanted to shoot my shot for some free movie tickets.

This just blew my mind because subconsciously I loved every second kingpin was onscreen and I never realised that it was because of the brilliant usage of negative space to literally bleed out of the frame to the point where the cinematography is part of his character design. I'm getting chills just by writing this

Another interesting thing is the color of his suit, Kingpin traditionally dones his iconic full white suit, so his black suit is in an early indication that he is in mourning.

I love how you mentioned the frame of the train door turning the table on him, instead of controlling the framing he’s now the one being controlled. I always wonder if with shots like that, the animators/storyboarders deliberately think stuff like that through, or if it’s just an ‘instinct’ of sorts that comes from their experience in visual storytelling?
@aaaalan

nearly everything you see in a movie is a deliberate choice made by a filmmaker, even more so in animation. it's why i love both mediums so much

Kingpin's design in this, as you could probably tell, was directly based on Bill Sienkiewicz's brilliant depiction in the 80s graphic novel Daredevil: Love and War. Sienkiewicz's style crosses traditional 70s and 80s painters like Bob Peak and Bernie Fuchs with the bananas style of Ralph Steadman. He combines photo-referenced portraiture with the outrageous caricature that was popular in magazine illustration at the time. That's how he came up with that absurd design, a man who's a wall in an elegant brocaded waistcoat. The film took that idea and reinvented it for the film. I think the black suit was a key change to adapt the idea into the cinematic frame commentary you point out so well. He takes over the frame in almost every shot, until the very end, when he's left hanging in Miles' web, looking small and helpless. Fun Fact #1: The animation style of Kingpin's family flashbacks are designed to look like Sienkiewicz's Love and War painted pages. Fun Fact #2: Vince D'Onofrio's prime influence for his performance was the very image you used in this video, the painting of Kingpin taking up the whole page. There's nothing like an actor to directly connect to the audience's emotional empathy, but animation will always have the edge with artistic expression. If the studios just get out of the artists' way and let them be artistic, instead of using the same style, even the same generic princess character models in every movie.

yeah! i actually had a shoutout to Sienkiewicz for his influence on this Kingpin, but i ended up leaving it out. but i hadn't heard of how Sienkiewicz arrived at his design or either of your other fun facts before. super interesting, thanks for sharing

Did anyone notice that The Spot’s super boosted form in the mumbattan scenes, has his design vaguely look like kingpins’s design. Shapes and scraggly line work aside, the symbolism in how Spot goes from white n black to black n white, specifically a black mass with a white spot for a face, was the first thing I noticed about his visual update, that he’s on some level has a purity to him and he trades that for power in a defining moment, allowing him to not only mimic Kingpin’s power by having a collider created, but having that kind of power at his fingertips and taking it beyond further, regardless of the cost. Emphasizing what I mentioned earlier, the scraggly line work and destabilization of his transforming design. Showing he doesn’t care about controlling his power, he cares about who can he hurt and ruin with it.

The shot of Kingpin in the dark room with blue lighting is my favourite movie shot to EVER be created, for the past five years I’ve been sending it to my mom with inconsistent timing between each occurrence. She hates that image so much. I asked for it to be printed on my birthday cake once, so far no dice but I’ll keep trying. She’s never seen the first Spider-Verse but we saw the second once last week, and SOMEHOW she managed to miss every single moment where Kingpin appeared on screen, either through sheer will or seething hatred for the giant square man. I hope he appears exactly as this in every Spider-Man media of the future.

The precision and clarity of ITSV's art direction was something I sorely missed watching ATSV. Alberto Mielgo's influence on the first movie cannot be understated (though he didn't design Kingpin, he laid the groundwork for a large chunk of the art direction, most notably the 'Leap of Faith' storyboards). I still enjoyed ATSV, but the first movie, while being less experimental, was so masterful and made perfect use of the right mindblowing effects at the right times.

That's a really fantastic take, but that also means such effects are almost impossible to replicate. He is unique. In the sequel, no character is designed in such a way as to occupy the screen and become a framing device. Hobie Brown and Evolved Spot barely meet these standards, the former embodying epilepsy, the latter's power transforming his environment and filling the whole screen with his presence.
@aaaalan
@aaaalan 11 ай бұрын
that's true, but i don't think hobie or the spot need to do the same thing that kingpin does. in fact, i think it's really exciting that the filmmakers want to explore in different directions. for example, i think the spot starting out as a sketch and ending with ink flowing outside the boundaries of his silhouette was really cool and has a lot of potential to be really sick in the next movie, even more than what we saw in across the spider-verse

Your comedic timing is on point 👌🏻 Also the very first time I saw into the spiderverse I absolutely loved how Kingpin’s suit was just an all absorbing black, I think it’s called Venta Black? I like to call it Void Black. Anyways the fact that only the edges of his suit are affected by light really shows how much power he has to the point where even the world around him barely has an effect on him.

Can't believe I never saw anyone talk about his character design before because back when I saw the movie it was one of the things that stood out to me the most. Just brilliant design. Kingpin could work better in video game form than insomniac's if you had a gigantic hulking kingpin and kept the camera centered on him in a boss fight, thats still good the player still is focused on their opponent, and he can still dominate the screen, but not quite to the same literally frame warping effect you describe here.

While watching this, I also had a thought about the shots where it's literally just Kingpin's face, shirt, and tie. It's a visual representation of his selfishness, his ego. There is nothing around him. A completely black void. At the center is Kingpin himself, alone. Still dominating the frame for sure, but alone. Also, I like your thumbnail for the video. And obviously the video itself. Real good stuff 👍

This video was great but you missed one other thing about Kingpin’s design: he looks like a giant baby. It’s true - babies are bald, fat, and have stubby limbs. How does this reflect Kingpin’s character? Into the Spider-Verse is all about Miles growing up. Miles has to learn from his experiences in order to change. What does Kingpin do in the movie? _He_ refuses to change. He never learns from his mistakes. He blames his own failures on other people. He is willing to risk destroying the multiverse just to satisfy himself. Basically, Kingpin is a manchild.
@aaaalan
@aaaalan 11 ай бұрын
