On 16 December 1838 a schooner called “the Royalist” set sail from England to Singapore. Its owner, a former soldier called James Brooke had put together a crew of old friends to go on an adventure in Southeast Asia, exploring the island of Borneo. It would be nine years until he returned, and by that time he was no longer a private citizen. He had become the first of a series of rulers known as the White Rajahs of Sarawak, a de-facto independent state on the island. This is the story of how James Brooke founded a dynasty that would last 100 years, and a state that still exists today.

So, this took a bit longer to make than I expected. 😅 I was aiming to make it around 13 minutes long, but there are a lot of interesting things to be said about Brooke and it spiraled out of control. Anyway, I plan to be back again with shorter videos soon!

For anyone wondering, the Brooke dynasty still lives. Charles Vyner’s brother, Bertram, had one son, Anthony, who died in 2011 at the age of 98, and the family survives through his two grandson by his eldest child and only son James, namely Laurence Nicholas and Jason Desmond Brooke, with Jason being the primary representative of the dynasty in both Britain and Sarawak.

Okay so this is my conclusion of the family : James = Make sarawak independence but wanted to sell the country in the end as he sees the country is too poor John = Didnt want James to sell Sarawak so James wanted him dead, but then James said oop, I never said I wanted to sell sarawak. Charles = G.O.A.T the best of The White Rajahs Charles Vyner = Also like James, the country had no money after Japanese acquisition and wanted to sell it to the british.... But he at least wanted to give power back to the sarawakian before the Japanese came.

somewhat ironic that, were the native people on the supreme council to have had their way, this family may still be monarchs in South East Asia today. Given the structure of government in Malaysia and the fact they'd likely have joined eventually, perhaps they'd have ended up a tenth monarch within their system.

I believe the rajah's great grandson jason brooke has been coming back to visit sarawak every few years and helping the local museums to hold exhibitions and stuff like that related to his family.

Yes, he does. He has managed to set up the Brooke Trust and exhibit historical items of his family at the Fort Margherita and Ranee Museum. Come and visit, you'll see much of that history in Kuching (Sarawak's capital). You could also watch Edge of The World which is a movie adaption of how Brooke became Sarawak's Raj.

I have a brother who moved to Sarawak many years ago, and married into a Sebuyau (a subgroup of Iban) family: I visited them with my folks about 30 years ago. A good summary of James Brooke's life.

This is very good and a great overview. I lived in Singapore for 10 years and also travelled in Malaysia, to the Malay peninsular but also to Sabah (Mt Kinabalu and Kota Kinabalu a couple of times). I never knew this history although had friends from Sarawak who boasted about their headhunter heritage. Loved this history so thanks for all the detail.

First heard of Brooke in the novel "Flashman's Lady" in a series of historical novels by George McDonald Frasier. The novel was great Frasier was meticulous in his historical research that is all in the book.

This video was well worth the wait i would say! I would love to see a movie about his life since it just sounds so interesting! I would really like if you made a movie about the city of Bath, since i think it would fit your channel theme of primarly Eurpean art and culture since that city has such a rich artistic and cultural history, especially during the victorian era! Great video as always and i would love to see more of these 30≈ minute long videos if i'm honest!

'm the great grand daughter of Esc, Charles Brooke's 1/2 Iban/Sea Dyak child who settled in Canada. I'm looking for authentic information about his as originally his existence was carried until the late 80's. Who are some local historians who have the Malay perspective on this? I'd like to connect with someone about this- Esca was sent away at the age of 6 years and was denied his relationship to the Brooke family, his family. I understand his mother died when he was young but I would like to learn more about this besides what is in movies, plays and such. Thanks in advance for any leads!! Heather

At 11:09. How did James Brooke speak to his subjects? Was he fluent in Malay? Was he fluent in the lingua franca of the region? (I'm not familiar, but I would think maybe Hindi or Cantonese. Considering that Brooke was born in India, he probably had pretty good Hindi.) It just seems so weird that the natives were willing to submit to a non-Muslim outsider who barely spoke their native tongues.

If I remember correctly he was fluent in Malay. He must have learned it pretty quickly after arriving in the area. I read something about him impressing the locals by telling stories of a trip he had made to Istanbul, a great Muslim city that they had heard of.

@@kingsandthings Being born in Varanasi, I'd imagine that Brooke became very familiar with Muslim culture and lore at a very young age. It's one of the most religiously diverse cities in India. Also these East India Company officers and their wives never parented that much, outsourcing this tedious task to native nannies. I'd imagine that Brooke's nanny was probably a Muslim woman who taught him Indian languages, like Hindi, along with a lot of the subtleties of the Muslim religion. Thus Brooke had the cultural knowledge, comfort and dexterity to charm a lot of these Muslim natives in Sarawak, along with being fluent in Malay, at least.

Kuching@ Sarawak was handed over to James Brooke to administer on behalf of Brunei Sultanate...soon after 1841 land grabs, rebellion, slavery were the issues transpired...Brunei had lost all of its territories. Admin you should get both records on both side i.e. Brunei and British.
