Good grief. Your music journalism is making quantum leap every month or so. This is your best film yet by a long way. The writing, the editing, the analysis, even the style parody bumpers are just so together.

The Zombies "Odessey and Oracle" was the British answer to Pet Sounds, and one of the greatest albums of all time.

This vid is beautiful and heartbreaking. Del Shannon was so brilliant and so tortured (he ironically committed suicide while being treated with Prozac, one of the early people suffering chronic depression to be treated with the drug; his widow later sued the pharmaceutical company); "Home and Away" is a lost classic. The vid also reminds me about the talented Billy Nicholls (of "London Social Degree" fame, a not-so-subtle song meant to be remembered for its acronym) who is all too little known here in the States. I'm grateful for these vids. It can be sad to remember a time so full of hope and optimism with all the cynicism and lies characterizing the current time, but I hope that those in Gen Z and beyond can build a new era of hope- and love- and these vids can certainly contribute to that.

The friendly competition between bands during the 1960's along with breakthroughs in music technology around the same time is what made popular music evolve at hyper speed over a mere 5-10 years. I'm convinced that it was 300 years worth of music evolution in that small amount of time.

9:30 Wow! Saying this suggests that it inspired "Gently Weeps" is very diplomatic. George obviously lifted the chord sequence and rhythm directly from Shannon. I KNEW IT WAS HOME & AWAY!!! This album is so magical & I just found it on a whim on Spotify & it's a shame Del Shannon didn't gain a second wave of fame because of this album cause the songs are so good. It's a shame the album didn't come out back then, but it's great we have it now.

Cut & Come Again is an absolutely stunning song. Just a gorgeous melody and arrangement. I first heard it on Radio2 while driving along on autopilot many moons ago.. it was one of those 'wow!' moments. I didn't actually catch the artist or song title so I looked up the playlist online later. I couldn't believe it was Del Shannon singing such sublime and esoteric pop... I had absolutely no idea he'd changed his style so dramatically. Anyway, I ordered the album and have played it to death. Absolutely beautiful slice of 60s pop

Pet Sounds and Forever Changes were both classics that failed in the US but were embraced in the UK.

Years ago I told my mum & sis (you've got me speaking British English) that the reason (IMHO) Pet Sounds and the 1967 LP Wild Honey charted so well in the UK was because the British recognize a true artist in Brian Wilson. Brian Wilson laid the groundwork for 70s soft rock, baroque rock, and progressive rock. Pet Sounds is one LP every rock connoisseur must have in his or her collection. What happened to Del Shannon was tragic. In the 80s Tom Petty helped him get his career and life back on track. Prozac exacerbated Shannon's depression and took his own life when he was becoming popular again. One final lighter note here in the States there is a statement on social me and in pop culture that 1966 is the year everything changed.

Great stuff, it was so sad what happened to Del. Billy Nicholls is a great talent, he sang backing vocals for the Who during their 1989 tour. His son is a great bass guitarist, he also played for the Who in their Olympic closing ceremony performance. He’s also been the keyboard player for the band Muse up until last year.

I love finding these gems, Del's records, Love's Forever Changes, Sixto Rodriguez's records, and Scott Walker's solo albums of the late 60s.

Brilliant documentary as we've come to expect from this channel. Really well researched and produced- and a great eye (and ear) opener! Thank you for shining a spotlight on 'Home and Away'. 'Cut and come again' is just glorious. Well worth checking out the Billy Nicholls LP and the singles and LPs by Twice As Much, which also have that wonderful and distinctive Immediate UK baroque pop sound.

Before I found this channel I thought I knew a little bit about pop music in London in the 1960s. But I soon realised my knowledge was completely superficial. This is just another example of how this channel has revolutionised my understanding of the scene. I'd never heard a word about this project that some of the hippest people in London music production were enthusiastically working on.

With hindsight we see that Pet Sounds was unrepeatable - even by the Beach Boys, ironically Smiley Smile suffered a similar fate. However it broke the mould and started an evolutionary race which has resulted in a plethora fine psychedelic and baroque pop albums. It's great we can finally get to hear these masterpieces, but it's a shame some people never got to reap the fruits of their labours

Ever since your video that featured Shannon as an artist who tried to adapt to the psychedelic 60s, I delved into Del's discography (Home and Away, The Further Adventures of Charles Westover, Rock On!) and absolutely love the albums. But Home and Away has some of the best music I've ever listened to. I always loved Runaway and knew a little about Shannon (like his end) but before you video, not much beyond that. Now I'm on a huge Beach Boys kick (Loves You, Adult/Child, Pet Sounds, listened to them a lot in college) and this being recommended to me so I've come back again to Del. Hugely underrated artist and the album should've been released (imagine Home and Away and SMiLE coming out within months of each other!). Thanks for your great history videos!

Wonderful video. Del Shannon doesn't do much for me personally, but Home and Away is certainly an underrated album, and you have to admire how Andrew assembled a supergroup of talented musicians for the project.

I came late to appreciating "Pet Sounds". As a high schooler when it was released I was pretty dismissive of that over produced "surf music sh*t" and the pop goody boys image of the Beach Boys. I supposed I liked my music rawer and was so much a Dylan fan that I'd already played the grooves off my "Hwy 61" album and was much anticipating Dylan's next master work. That was "Blonde on Blonde" and was released not too long after "Pet Sounds". Later in the '70's a girlfriend convinced me into listen to "Pet Sounds" and I started really hearing it for the first time. People can change!

I’ve got this album on CD…it’s a lost Shannon masterpiece that I still listen to….just waiting it might one day be released on vinyl…

We're lucky Further Adventures is as recorded and properly released. I'd argue that it's even better than the tracks on Home and Away. Can't wait for the story of Billy Nicholls that's been a favorite album for years. A tragedy that didn't get passed the promo release stage at the time.

Great job with this mini doc. I learn so much from your videos. Will check out those two attempts at a Pet Sounds answer. Your little touches such as the song playing in a car stereo and the accompanying images are so creative. For those who really like Under My Thumb, the great punk/hardcore band Social Distortion has several cover versions of the song on youtube.

"Pet Sounds" was and is a landmark for the Beach Boys....but it's too bad it sorta became an albatross in their recording career/history because they made other fine, even excellent albums soon after like "Wild Honey", "Friends" and "Sunflower" that don't get their due because they are always being compared to this immortal album!

Great video on some great music. I discovered "Home And Away" and "The Further Adventures Of Charles Westover" last year and have been playing them loads. I was even listening to Mind Over Matter today, so was very pleasantly surprised to see your video on this period of Del Shannon's career. I understand the Billy Nicholls connection better now, with Del covering some of Nicholls songs and also The Small Faces playing on Del's and Billy's albums. There is a version of Cut And Come Again that Nicholls recorded himself on the compilation Snapshot, which appeared on Southwest Records in 1999 and includes many unreleased songs and demos which were recorded for the brilliant "Would You Believe" LP in 1968. Thank you Yesterday's Papers for your superb videos. Keep on doing what you're doing. 😎👍

Del Shannon's Runaway always reminds me of the movie American Graffiti

The "Pet Sounds sound" was sort of a fleeting thing in a decade that was quickly devolving into chaos. It still influenced the "sunshine pop" coming mostly from the west coast of the USA, with singles like Keith's 98.6 and The Lovin' Spoonfull's "Still a Mystery to Me" , and it got into some of the best pop instrumentals of those years like Herb Alpert's "Flamingo" and Rayond Lefevre's version of "Soul Coaxing". But I think it started to seem out of place as the Vietnam war kept escalating and riots spread in the USA; maybe it should have hung on longer in the UK, but it seems that that didn't happen.

Absolutely love their version of Billy Nicholls' Come Again. "It's My Feeling" is also amazing. I didn't know Shannon committed suicide :(

Great little doc, well done. I love Home & Away, such a shame it never got released at the time. I think the nearest UK LP we got to Pet Sounds that was released at the time is Harmony Grass on RCA. It's a little too bubblegum at times but still has a Pet Sounds influence. Mark Eric A Midsummers Day Dream released in the US is the nearest sound to Pet Sounds I've heard, beautiful LP.

This is a great documentary. Loads of choice nuggets of facts and stories and trivia. Great scene-setting and background info. The fact that Billy Nicholls wrote part of the melody for While My Guitar Gently Weeps before George Harrison could even say 'plagarism' was a bit of a shocker, to be honest. Wow.

Your content and the way you put it together is really excellent. I never knew about most of this. I did know of Del Shannon ad Brian Wilson taking an acetate to Paul McCartney. But I new nothing of the album Del Shannon made and Andrew Oldhams insolvent in it all. I also did not know of the other album thing to capture the sound of Pet Sounds. I will make one suggestion. Slow down and pause a bit when you are announcing names. People need a bit to take it in. This is a very common problem on presenters on KZfaq, and you are actually better than most. Let me give you an example. You could have said, "Then Del Shannon...[indicating slight pause to give the name time to fix in the listeners head (now I new his name already so that wasn't a problem for me, but it could be for others) and go on to mention his road manager and whatever else he was--see I missed some of that because you were moving just a bit too fast--and then move on]. Some of the other names like the guy who orchestrated the album. You mentioned the producer quikly after his name.Just slow down a touch. We need to get it all and not have to watch it again or pause and skip back. And I still don't know the name of the duo that made another album that tried to recr3ate the sound of 'Pet Sounds.' I think it would have better to introduce their name first and then say that they went on to release a critically acclaimed album later in 1967 that was very similar in feel and atmosphere to 'Pet Sounds'--us8ng your own wording which is excellent. Just pause a bit for the names so they can register in our minds. All in all, however, your research, information, and presentation were excellent. And I certainly enjoyed it. Wow, look at 'Sound of Music' still at number one, and all those other albums. A important factor is that the British preferred a softer, more poppy sound sound than Americans up til this point and probably to this day. The Doors had already released the8r first album in the US. Britain was beginning to have some artists with a heavier sound, especially out of London with groups like The Who. The Stones moved to a more aggressive r&b sound soon too, away from their softer experimentation in songs like 'As Tears Go By,' and 'Ruby Tuesday.'

Loved this! Was always aware of the Beatles (McCartneys) infatuation with Pet Sounds and the influence it had on them. But nice to see how it went beyond them to other artists who were similarly influenced. Songs with a lysergic feel ... 😆

Sounding like "Pet Sounds" really isn't a response to the original album, more like a derivative. Still learning this much on the background of these Del Shannon albums does put them into the right context and adds meaning to the effort.

The Billy Nicholls influence on the most fab of Beatles is very clear. Nice catch sir!

In 1967 and through to about 1971 or 1972, Liberty was under distribution by Philips Industries. I have three examples of Liberty's two-tone blue labelled singles of that era. They were "Gimme Little Sign"(Brenton Wood), 1967, "[I'm The] Urban Spaceman"(Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band), 1968 and "Run Through The Jungle"(CCR), 1970. Of the three, the first and third singles mentioned had punch-out optional centres while the middle-named had the European large centre(I'm not about to credit America with that type of spindle centre, they're egotistical enough already).

I'd love to see a piece like this about the Millenium project from 1968 as well.

Perhaps too unknown, but would you ever consider a video on the album Gulliver Travels S/T on Instant (A subsidiary of Immediate records) that despite promising collaboration and lineup was pulled from shelves a week after its release?

Del Shannon's "Silver Birch" from the 1968 album "The Further Adventures Of Charles Westover" anticipates the atmosphere of King Crimson's "Epitaph"

A point here, you pointed that Life Is But Nothing was contributed by the two members of Twice As Much, but they originally recorded it on their late 1966 album, and is on their Anthology CD, P.P. Arnold covered it for the B side of her first single early the following year. Yet she was on this album here. How did Pet Sounds virtually flop in the States, when The Beach Boys already had a long string of hit singles and albums there? But fortunately, it gave them their UK breakthrough at the same time. When that album was released in 1966, it was deemed as the greatest, the most advanced and most elaborate that anybody was going to get, and years ahead of it's time. But unfortunately, due to this ever changing world of the sixties that we were already going through when musical trends were shifting fast and furious, only the following year when Psychedelia exploded, which changed the whole face of the music world again in the sixties, and Jimi Hendrix had become God, out-fashioning a lot of the great sounds of the mid sixties, even Pet Sounds seemed way in the past, and out of date. So maybe it was not a wonder that this Del Shannon album was shelved, when by then, we were into this Psychedelic governed era. But I think the West Cost scene changed accordingly with the rest of the music world at the time, with groups like The Beach Boys and The Byrds getting replaced by The Doors and Jefferson Airplane. I will have to find out the tracks for this Billy Nicholl album that you mentioned, as I would be rather interested to hear it. But I was already aware that Andrew Oldham was at times good at creating his own Deep Wall Of Soundalike. But by 1967, That Lovin' Feelin' soundalike was past it's sell-by date as far as the record buyers were concerned.

A really interesting story about a record I knew nothing about - it sounds like something of a folly, a MASSIVE reach to even attempt to emulate Pet Sounds. Even if you somehow capture the chamber-pop instrumental sound, the yearning, plaintive feel of the melodies, you’ll still not get close to Brian Wilson and Tony Asher’s lyrics, which are dripping melancholy. I do want to listen to Home and Away now, though, as I know Billy Nichols’ record and just because it probably fails on Pet Sounds’ terms, doesn’t mean it has no credentials of it’s own.
