Remain to be convinced by the brass band sound. Other than Punchinello, these matches were written for a brass and wind band. One of the glories of an Alford march is the inventive woodwind counter melodies. And as for the uniforms! Having got rid of so many other bands in the last few years, you would think something a little smarter an d more impressive could have been devised. They currently resemble a town band!

One of my favorite marches 7:13 "Lilliburlero" Regimental March of REME. It is also The Corps of RCEME Regimental March in Quick Time, which is a combination of “Lillibulero” and “Auprès de ma blonde.” Regards from London, Ontario, CANADA.
@sidpheasant75852 жыл бұрын
Obviously, since time began "Lilliburlero" has been a job for the woodwind. Oh but sorry, this BRASS band can't do that, can it? Sounds OK, of course, and I will respect "our lads and lasses" with my dying breath, believe me. But it's NOT as it should be - obvious and outrageous pennypinching and ersatz.

Brings back some memories seeing those uniforms. My father was in REME for 22 years, 1953 - 75 and I grew up around them, first at Fallingbostel then Arborfield, 23 Base Workshop in Wetter & lastly at SEME in Bordon, 1962 - 75.

@@briancrook2682 Please don't get me wrong, Brian - I LIKE brass bands in a works-band/town-band context (and really admire the "Sally Ann" - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLOoZ9GSsqiXnaM.html brings an absolute tear to my eye ). I even have some CDs (!!) of the Crystal Palace Champions - and it's high quality and good to listen to. But a military band is a wind+percussion band in my head, and that's that...
@briancrook26822 жыл бұрын
@@sidpheasant7585 The truth is that I also like a good military band. The standard has risen in the last 20 years or so from very good to outstanding. The police escorts however have gone the other way. Maybe they should have some military training before they are allowed to do these parades.
@sidpheasant75852 жыл бұрын
@@briancrook2682 Agreed! Although I was a Royal Tournament regular, went to Aldershot twice, and even went in 1985 to Wembley to see most of the Army Bands perform together for what turned out to be the last time in the "Military Musical Pageant" context (it threw it down with rain and they performed marvellously anyway, but our party had to leave before the Grand Finale to catch the last train home), I am not naive that we could continue with 2000 in the Army Bands (to say nothing of the RAF and fantastic RM). But still to observe the scale of the decline in quantity is upsetting. The quality is indeed yet-higher (and even in interesting new ways - like kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fKmem9iqrqeWdnk.html - which just proves I am NOT against all change); but at some point that will be threatened too if we go on the way we are going - which is why I keep my eye on these developments!

Whatever explanation they offer - should they deign to offer one - it will boil down to one thing ... to further pursue cuts in the armed forces. After all they were of no use at all when we had the Olympics, or the floods, or swine flu, or foot and mouth, or the pandemic, or any other issues. We can safely cut to the bone, and then some, and all will be OK, won't it? The people won't even notice, being more concerned with other issues, just as most now think 9/11 was conventional terrorism, and so on. VVP is just laughing at this...

They are just a brass band with no woodwind,, so not a proper military band. The uniforms are sad - drab No1 dress and no musician's wings - more like the Salvation Army or a town band. What has our military music come to??
