My dad had a Belle mixer like that in the 80s. His had an electric motor though. He wasn't a bricky by trade but he bought it to build his own garage. Although we've long since moved away from that house, it's still standing strong today.

Charlie, as a tip for the rebar, keep a galvanized piece of pipe handy, maybe 1500mm, thick walled, say 50mm dis, and use that to bend the rebar. Gives you a decent lever and can fit down the block work to the bottom of the slab. That’s really where you need to bend the reo from.

Got to love those belle mixers, mine was a 2nd hand one 2006 mode (electric)l, hadn't been used in years. As soon as I brought it 4 years ago, I took it all apart and gave it a service, new belt and pulleys, new oil. ( It didn't need it but my father stripped the gear box and replaced the bearings) should out live me now. Quality mixer 👍 Sounds like who ever installed those rebar's didn't space them out correctly. Mike Haduck Masonry on KZfaq is an American man, old school bricky he has some fantastic videos with excellent tips tricks and skills laying those blocks over rebar. Keep up the good work Charlie and Amy 👍

We've got one that was previously given to my dad around 15 years ago and he used it but now we have it, and it was manufactured in 1999 so its the same age as me. The gearbox gave up just a couple days ago in the middle of a concrete pour but hoping to just buy the new shaft/gear and seals and repair it. It's amazing really and a testament to how well built they are. I think it has only had two new drums in its lifetime but numerous belts, I can't imagine the amount its mixed in its lifetime.

Put a scaffold tube over the rebar and bend them straight on the first course and that helps a bit, but still a pain 👊🏻

Looks like you have a pallet of half blocks there mate, dont use them All up, you are also laying them upside down, the V in the middle goes to the top and should have a 10 mm rebar layed in it.Put the line on the other side and lay them overhand far easier than lifting them over the line.

Simple way to centralise the rebar is use tie wire round the bar to the diagonals, you can make a batch and slip them over a quickly adjust, then when you pour the sloppy mix you can also get a poker in all the way down, those bars would need overlap and tying as you said not they way they are going to be....

Those 20 cm blocks don't go in as fast as the bricks do they? I remember working as an laborer back in the 80s and we installed 10" expo blocks. They were a 10" block and had a decorative 4" thick ridged face on the front of the block and they weighed around a 100 lbs each. They would literally turn men into hunchbacks and cripples. I also remember working with my old man on a chimney in an attic back then with 24" chimney blocks which weighed over 150 lbs each. Both of these have long since been banned due to the damage they caused but those were the days 💪💪💪

i lay a lot of these. I never put the rebar in the foundation when im pouring it. il pour the slab/footing with no rebar, so then i can lay my first course exactly how i like it, then i wait for first course to go off, then i chemfix the rebar in the first course so its placed perfectly

The way I build them blocks is either build first row in fresh laid concrete footings and then place rebar or if footings solid build first row and drill holes for rebar and resin in place but unfortunately most of the time someone else has them already in footings by time you get there and usually never perfect, are you putting horizontal rebar in as well

We do a lot of basements/Garages with 8inch solid block like that, the rebar is never in the right spot, we always use a concrete saw and cut the center webs out or the end out and make it work that way.
