In October 2014, 29 year old Brittany Maynard told the world she planned to die gently before brain cancer completely destroyed her body and mind. Her messages energized a larger movement to transform how Americans approach dying. Barbara Coombs Lee is keeping her promise to Brittany to keep fighting for end-of-life choices. This is her story.
American Activist and President of Compassion & Choices
Barbara practiced as a nurse and physician assistant for 25 years before beginning a career in law and health policy. Since then she has devoted her professional life to individual choice and empowerment in health care. Barbara’s professional experience includes work as a private attorney, counsel to the Oregon State Senate, a managed care executive, and President of Compassion In Dying from 1996-2004. Barbara was Chief Petitioner for the Oregon Death with Dignity Act. She is a champion for enabling individuals with the freedom to consider a complete range of choices and be full participants in their health care decisions. As President of Compassion & Choices, Barbara oversees advocacy, development, legislative and client support.

R.I.P Brittany what a beautiful soul. I am 62 and terminally ill dying a horrible painful death hospice has been wonderful but the pain is way more than I can handle anymore only wish we had that option here

I’m 64 with a terminal cancer Darrell I want you to know your not alone I guess I’m lucky in the fact it’s prostate cancer But it’s in a 4th stage only in the bones I saw my oncologist last week and he told me the treatments are working When I asked him about my prognosis he told me I could have many more years I take that with a grain of salt although it gave me hope I know you posted this a year ago and I hope your still doing alright My prayers and heart are with you

It shouldn’t just be for people who are terminally ill, but for anyone who wishes to end their life. If I have no right to interfere with someone’s right to live, why is it that others can determine I am not allowed to die peacefully, pain free and with dignity?

I don’t think we have the rights to take our own life, sometimes pain can give us valuable lessons, instead of running away from it, we can face it with faith and hope that the pain we feel in the physical body we are about to leave is something we can learn from. The people around us can also learn from our suffering, “without suffering there could be no compassion” and who knows what kind of miracle we can face if we just become courageous.

she's truly miss so much she left behind none of us cant relate to her pain unless you have her illness she was clearly in a lot of pain everyday.she chose to go in peace. ...but she suffer a lot emotional cause she knew she was leaving her mom her husband in grief and and a everlasting pain.rest in peace she control her death not the cancer.......

Indeed! A step ahead of this game would be the understanding of soul/spirit moving on after this mortality. Understanding I am still me, Just Super Me when I transition to the other side. We are all headed there

I agree with Brittany 1000%. The health care world is about money not the best interest of the people dieing people have to due pay doctors and meds and having to move if needed and all the medical bills due people are making money from a person or family who is dieing that is not right. I support brittany and i will fight like she did. Brittany was loving kind caring and had hope. May she rest in peace knowing she made a diffrence in the world. Love to her family for having such a heart

FYI. I was pronounced dead in a 12 car pile up. I still felt me, I was just Super Me! All warmth, love, all knowing & such happiness. The EMTs made it their mission to force me to live. Thats what was tough & painful. We are all transitioning, some quicker than others. It is not a day of sadness but a day of freedom and joy. Namaste ~

Being pro-choice doesn't mean you support abortion, but you want women to have the right to decide for themselves. The same applies to death with dignity. It's an option.

@@msmicheJJ Should we leave it all to the gods then? Switch off the incubators in pre-natal wards, cancel life-saving surgerys and pray harder? But to who? So many gods to chose from. So how much playing is too much, pray tell 🙏 and doesn't an individual have a right to decide that for themselves. Religions are born of a fear of dying. It is a travesty that they would seek to interfere with the lives of those to whom religion doesn't speak.

The option to die is an important personal choice that sometimes needs to be made in many serious medical problems, I know I would want this option for certain devastating conditions, I m happy this has become a just in case option in my life time, from what it previously was, a crime...

Reading through the comment section on these Brittany Maynard videos you have to look really hard to find someone who doesn't agree with her choice to die on her own terms. That should speak volumes to legislatures.

Esse tema é muito importante, deveria ser discutido no Brasil também. É necessário entender o direito de prolongar a vida ou amenizar a dor paliativamente, assim como o direito de não prolongar a morte, o sofrimento e a dor de alguém. Sobre si o indivíduo deve ter autonomia soberana, sobre sua vida e sobre o fim dela.

Sí claro, esta chica lo hizo todo muy "tranquila" porque no tiene hijos que dependen de ella, ¿qué hubiera sucedido si los hubiera tenido? Seguro no se hubiera animado a irse cuando ella quería sino todo lo contrario, cuando Dios lo decidiera sobre todo para verlos el mayor tiempo posible, al menos yo así lo hubiera hecho yo.

Because doing it yourself leads to mistakes and a larger mess and trauma for others who find you after you hang yourself or shoot yourself in the head. Think maybe it might be less hurtful to the living. Not that it wouldn't cause sorrow anyways. But really it's more that the person dying has control.

What happened to Brittany was horrible and it makes me cry. I'm not pro euthanasia and assisted suicide laws, however. Every human being has intrinsic, immeasurable value and their lives should always be protected. We must alleviate sick peoples suffering - not kill them.

mi mama murió de cáncer de colon hace sólo seis meses. sufrió la metástasis y las quimioterapia por 4 anos. 4 anos de sufrimiento, no se si hubiera sido mejor dejarla ir sin más quimioterapia que al final, la destrozo y me destrozo al mi verla sufrir tanto, es un dolor que no tiene comparación, algo de mi se fue con ella. y creo que esto me va al durar toda mi vida. la extraño y la adoro cada día cada minuto cada segundo. dios me ayude, sin el creo que es demasiado para mi.

And so that is a person's choice. Some people have been strong for so long it is just not going to work for them any longer. Or are you into seeing others suffer? Not sure why anyone ever even objects to someone else's choice.
