Princess Alice of Athlone outlived Alexander by 24 years dying in January 1981 aged 97 (the last surviving grandchild of Queen Victoria). She was interviewed a couple of years before her death and she was spry and delightful with a wicked sense of humour. One thing that really struck me when I watched it as a teenager was her answer to one question which was ‘Have you ever prepared/cooked a meal for yourself?’. She looked really baffled at first and rather non plussed but finally admitted that she hadn’t. Her utter privilege really came home to my teenage self that every breakfast, lunch, dinner across almost 100 years, that she ever consumed, was acquired by, prepared by and served by someone other than herself. Quite amazing !

Exactly. Often narrators speak like they're hyper-caffeinated as still shots fly by rapid fire. This is well paced.

Very interesting. One correction: Princess Mary Adelaide was a granddaughter of George III, not a great-granddaughter.

She also bore a strong resemblance to Queen Victoria, her first cousin.

Francis Teck was definitely magnetically attractive (poor Princess Maud chased him to no avail). A rule breaker, gambler and not shy when it came to enjoying his sexual charisma (interesting that his will remains under wraps to this day)

Well Princess Maud settled for her 1st cousin, Prince of Denmark and unlike many others would never have to worry about her title having to be changed when she became queen of norway. On this way, i think Maud chose a better suiter lol

@@wuverrabbit oh definitely, Haakon wasn’t a looker like Francis but he was a far better catch in terms of stability (and they were by all accounts content in their marriage and he didn’t mind that she would spend long periods each year in England)

Francis did love Mary Adelaide But after their fourth child she was told that she could not (for health reasons) have any more children.

@@wuverrabbit I agree... much better Francis would never have been faithful and being so enamoured with him It would have hurt more.

For those who didn't know the royal family well, saying his wife being the sister of Charles Edward, and that both? sons had hemophilia she carried via her father whom died from it. Just little tid bits to bring the families together I think would of made this video better, but this was really good!

History Tea Time with Lindsay Holiday has a video "How Many of Queen Victoria's Descendants Died from Hemophilia?" It is amazing how many had it.

Alexander's two sons died of haemophilia. Alice was the daughter of Leopold, so was an obligate carrier of the disease

I am currently working on my family tree and I hit a roadblock with my Great mother that was rumored to be the first cousin of emperor Wilhelms wife (?)and lady in waiting to wilhelms Aunt (?)and She married below her station to my great grandfather who was the royal tailor and they were forced to leave the castle(?)and came to America. I only know that he was the royal tailor. If you can help that would be great if not no big deal I understand completely ,thanks for your time

Mary Adelaide was a granddaughter of George III just like Victoria. They look so alike! Her father was Adolphus, third youngest son of the king. He married a Hesse Kassell, and therefore Mary was a second cousin of Queen Alexandra and a second cousin once removed of George V on both his maternal and paternal side. Francis of Teck was a Wurrtemberg whose father made a morganatic marriage. George V's cousin, Alix, future Tsarina and the Edinburghs, whose mother was the daughter of a Tsar, were very scornful of the family and used to sneer at Mary's shabby clothes. I wonder whether this antipathy played any part in the Russian Royal family being refused sanctuary in Britain?

the reason why King George...rescinded his initial offer...was complicated ...George knew that Imperial Cousin well and had concerns due to the august and sheer arrogance there would be issues with him living in exile. He was very Opinionated and Imperial. PLUS...there was a real fear the grip of anti Royal Fever sweeping Europe at the time could follow the Tsar and his Family. NOT Easy Further...The King was assured that The Tsar would be given Safe Passage out of Russia...this was the Plan!! We Know the decision haunted The King for the rest of his life. The plans all changed for the Russian Family, It was then all too late. The King did make good on looking after the rest of the family. BUT Princess Dagmar, Mother of the Tsar was Danish Why didn't Denmark which was closer...offer Refuge ?

@@HistorywithMaria either way, it has a "giraffe-g" not a ""gift-g" It isnt that uncommon, just old fashioned -most often a pet name for "Algernon" but also other long "Al" names like Aloysius and Alphonse, Alexander and so on. No offense is intended I just know you want to do things 100% right Your content is excellent (or I wouldnt be a subscriber) and you have high standards, but if you havent heard something spoken before it can be a puzzle how it was supposed to be said isnt it?
