In an early sutta, the Buddha pointed to eight worldly conditions (otherwise known as "worldly winds") that effect our lives and stress us out. We will take a look at these eight conditions and try to understand them for what they are.
NB: Thanks to Lp Sander Khemadhammo for pointing out that the metaphor of winds in the context of these conditions (at least, six of the eight) is used in at least one sutta: suttacentral.net/sn17.9/en/su...

Thank you, Doug. A very timely subject. As a working musician, I've had to adjust myself to a new financial and artistic reality; and , coupled with the loss of a parent, my sense of gain/loss has been profound. I've found a new sense of contentment living simply, and helping animals and raising plants. And given our current societal issues, I've been happy constructing my world according to the resources available. Be well.

‘When gain, loss, status, disgrace, praise, blame, pleasure or pain arise for an unenlightened person; They do not reflect: “Gain (etc.) has arisen for me. It is inconstant and subject to change.”; So they do not discern it as it actually is. They welcome the gain, status, praise and pleasure but struggle with the loss, disgrace, blame and pain. Engaged in welcoming and struggling, he is not released from suffering.' - Lokavipatti Sutta

Most unskillful humans are being influenced by eight wordly conditions, but The Awakened ones are free of them. They understand that in more fundamental sense, there is only sunyata (emptiness). They truly enjoy life without being afraid of anxiety. ✋ Thank you for the video. 😊

Doug, I want you to know how many beings your videos have touched, and the downstream effect of the beings' lives made better by the first group, who has gone on to learn the Dhamma. I've since moved on to a more Mahayanin approach, but I very much appreciate what you do; you helped me get formally into Buddhism from my formerly Secular point of view. It was a stepping stone for me, but it was the most important step of the way 🙏

Thanks again Doug. I like your concise focus on a single concept or category from early Buddhism in these latest videos. I hadn't heard about the Eight worldly winds before, and as someone who currently holds materialist views about phenomena, from psychology to sociology, I am pleasantly surprised to learn this concept exists within Early Buddhism.

The metaphor of winds can be found to some extent in the early texts, with regard to the attachment to gain and offerings. It is used in the Samyutta, in the chapter on the dangers of gains and offerings.

Thanks very much Khemadhammo! I see it mentioned in SN 17.9: suttacentral.net/sn17.9/en/sujato . Though it isn't very much elaborated upon and that chapter has many other competing similes.

How can I cope with a break up? I feel like I’m done with women and will never love again. I’m only 22 and want to go deeper into the dharma to help me get over this. Do you have any advice? Maybe some way I can form a daily practice for this?
@user-Void-Star

That because you didn't found right one you shouldn't get in relationship fast. First learn eachother then decide whether you two are fit or not otherwise lots of problems comes in later. If woman is understandable to you and you are understandable to her then long term relationship can come true.
@DougsDharma

Well this is one of the downsides of attachment. But you're only 22! It's normal to go through breakups in life, that's how you begin to learn wisdom: who's really good for you and who isn't. But if you're going to pursue sentimental relationships, then occasional dukkha is going to be part of the result! 🙂

Dear Friend-at 82 I’ve live through many relationships coming & going. What has helped me is an understanding & application of the 2nd Buddhist precept: I undertake the training to not take that which is not freely offered (not just “stuff” but demands for love,etc.) May you find peace & ease on your Life journey❤
