You hit the nail on the head by calling it character instead of flaws. They are budget anamorphic lenses that look good. I applaud companies for putting more focus on those of us who don’t have the budget, but rather the vision and heart to produce something that can holds up well. So glad you’ve gone full time on here, look forward to seeing what else you can do with these lenses. And seeing if at some point I can mansplain to my wife why we need these…
@CineRants
@CineRants 7 ай бұрын
I don't really see how you could call that distortion we're seeing on the pans at 2:26 "character". Outside of some extremely heightened art piece or music video, where could you possibly get away with using that? Being able to pan a lens in-shot isn't some kind clutch feature reserved and expected only of high-end glass.
@cammackey

@@CineRants use whatever word you want. Imagine a world where all lenses looked the same and were “perfect”. That world would be a hard pass to me. @@cammackeywhat a great video man! You getting better and better. No tell me….nanomorphs or remus, i got both in my cart. I got the 50mm nano but i have to say that the remus have , like you said, great character. Or should I buy the 1,33x laowa adapter for more „character“? Its sooooo hard to find usefull opinions. Disclaimer: i love the look of Ford vs Ferrari (panavision)!
@cammackey
@cammackey 7 ай бұрын
@@sergebenassutti2975 the nanomorphs are sharper and cleaner, but have a flatter look and I feel like they can resolve a little more resolution. So if you need something that’s more on the safer side.. Nanomorphs. Can always do barrel distortion in post too. But if a die hard panovison guy and on a budget…. REMUS.
@sergebenassutti2975
@sergebenassutti2975 7 ай бұрын
@@cammackey in terms of sharpness. Thx for the fast reply. Lets add something to the equation, the nanos plus the 1,33x , how do you find that combo? I can‘t find a lot on that combo. And it looks like the adapter add better flares and barrel distortion and is also „sharp“ at 2.8/3.5. i am on a budget but not an a minimum budget. I am just looking for the „best“ sup 5000€ option. Ps: i added a black pro mist to my nano 50 and thats works like a charm

Being able to use them with a speed booster/tuner is a big freaking deal I saw on their site! Also, it looks like they are leaning into the cat-eye effect of the bokeh to make those corners look more like a 2x anamorphic. I've seen a similar effect shooting on the Isco adapters on wider than-recommended taking lenses and it looks sick! This is the first new anamorphic set I've been genuinely interested in buying, and the footage looks excellent as always, Cam!

I just worked 1st AC on a film with Zeiss master prime anamorphic and the softness you get when it's wide open is unmatchable, that being said , those lenses are $40k a pop here in Canada. I like that these lenses are under $2K and with that they give their own distinct look, amber flares, barrel distortion etc. The extent companies are going to create original equipment with very fair prices is an exciting conversation and we are blessed to be filmmakers in 2023. Thanks for the breakdown! I will now buy one...lol.

Thanks so much for the fantastic real-world footage Cam 🙏 Loving the look of these for the price. I have the 1.8x Great Joy 35 and 85, the 85 has some character but the 35 is rather too bland. This set looks at least somewhat better matched, though still with variations. Lightweight and small at an amazing price for the set, what's not to like if you're into this sort of look. Most of my work is out in the snow and ice on skis in hostile mountain terrain where the panoramas lend themselves really well to anamorphic, but it's too high risk for a set of Mercuries. These look ideal 👍

I took video samples using e different Sony cameras, A1, a7Siii and the ZV-E1. All came out worse than a Moment iPhone Anamorphic lens and so streaks. Normally we think too much. Sent this to them but they were not open to the issue. It would seem there is an alternative. I paid CA$1,850 and it's just fathering dust.

For a s35 camera would you still pick the REMUS over something like the Nanomorphs? I really dig the REMUS but have no experience with anamorphic lenses - So it would be my first one. Personally the Remus feels like up my alley, especially with the barrel distortion compared to the pin on the Nanos and they seem a lot cleaner than the Remus. I just know that I would dread that distortion correction step on every clip in post with the Nano. Then again will I be able to take enough advantage of the Remus on a s35 sensor? Thank you
@cammackey
@cammackey 6 ай бұрын
Yes the Remus look great on S35. The nanos are so clean that sometimes they look spherical. Laowa did an amazing job on them with quality, but I think there might be some stretch factor bokeh fall off and in return they give you better image quality. I prefer more character tho so I would go with the Remus if you’re gonna get into anamorphic. If you’re worried about image quality, anamorphic might not be the choice for your vision!

@Samskihero
@Samskihero 7 ай бұрын
I would also say these are very optically imperfect and the price actually reflects that, These are essentially Blazer Nero's combined with the spherical elements (kinda), They have Lots of CA, tame flares but nothing insanely lovely and the Bokeh is quite wild on the edges from cutting which looks ok to some less favorable stretching, and are quite inconstant with the 65 bokeh looks overly soft while the 45's bokeh is quite defined and the 100 just looks very soft wide open in terms of sharpness, but that price point is so appealing it's almost a 'why not' buy these as an extra set for creative purposes and the build and design is also so perfect for most and just such an upgrade to anyone using adapters. I really want to see if the EF version of these could work with the De-tuner L2/K35 to get more umf out of the Bokeh.

Exactly! Like I said towards the end, would have loved if they doubled or tripled the price and gave us better optics. But at under $1k… we cannot complain. Literally anyone who complains is a fool. What adapter do you use for the Komodo? You got the PL or EF lens version? @@cammackey

Does anyone know if these will clear rear mounted filters? I believe the rear mount is EF/PL user exchangeable. All of these look great, but I’m wondering of the 100mm is sharp enough. Does sharpness improve beyond its minimum focus?

The sharpness obsession thing bugs me too. I looovvve the softness of anamorphics and I find overly sharp images just too distracting when you can see every minor detail in the talents face. I used my Kowa 2x in Mauritius and it's literally the dreamiest thing ever...heavy rig but man, the image is beaut. Might have to get me a set of this though...

Hey Cam, ordered the remus 3x kit. The question now is what tech should I invest in for RS3 pro gimbal work? Can you do a vid on how you focused these lenses? Cheers

Hi Cam, just looking at the website, there is a "nero" and "joy" which is the one you are using? Also I can't find the adaptor kit you were talking about. Cheers, any help would be appreciated 👍 😊

@@waynosfotoscameras hahahaha oh yes yes. That’s the Blazar Nero. The lenses in this video tho are basically the Nero but in prime for. I def prefer these over adapters.

@cammackey okay, done lots of research and have to agree the barrel distortion is the most pleasing. But I just want to dip my toe into anamorphic as new to this format, and only want to get one lens to see if I like it, for a Canon RF mount (can use an ef adapter) I am thinking the remus 65mm, what would you pick as a starting lens, thinking for wedding receptions usage? Cheers

@cammackey stuff it! I just ordered the whole set! Watched this video so many times and love these lens. Pefer the DZO film Pavo 2x but these things are around 5 to 6x the price. You absolutely correct, at this price point, nothing looks so yummy. ❤ thanks for the review, your doing some good work over there in the states.
