The Budget Vinyl Project: Deep House

I set myself the challenge of creating themed vinyl only mixes where all of the vinyl's cost less than a fiver. To start of I delved into the melodic depths of deep house. I will make a google docs list of all the vinyl's used and their respective prices if you want to pick them up in the coming week.

Thank you for your inspiration. I got lucky and have a record shop 5 blocks away and they have tons of $1 bins. They recently bought out a dj collection and was able to snag a handful of minimal tracks. I check in weekly as they restock the $1 bins. Now that I have exhausted the $1 bins, hitting discogs for the $5 and under and boy a nice selection. Thank you again for the inspiration and tip on how to find some gems on discogs under $5.

Damm, just installed the Behringer uca202 and though I did read some negative reviews, I still went ahead and purchased for $20. I have to say it sounds solid. those negative reviews are of folks looking for $1,000 interfaces and what not. If you are on the fence about getting this interface card, I highly recommended. Though I am going the OBS route and not edit the video and audio separately. Thanks Robbie again for sharing your setup.

where do you buy your vinyl? discogs? local vinyl shops? i'm starting my own vinyl collection for DJing and focusing on some house styles and techno and i too am keeping a under 5$ limit on any vinyl i buy... it's a great exercise in not only digging, but also discovering unknown tracks that are amazing and almost forgotten. would love to get some insight into the shopping process and even more i would ABSOLUTELY LOVE an insight into a way to organize the vinyl for DJ sets great set

Sorry for not replying to this! I bought all these vinyls from discogs, then i tend to write down the tempos and mood of each track i want to include, to decide which order to play them in. Also deciding if i want to wind up towards the end of the set helps with the planning!

If youre ever in Berlin you can just go from one Record Store to another and browse 2nd hand deep house vinyls for 3 or 5€

Hey Robbie: nice mix and track selection; subscribed. Been taking a look at at the 23C and seems to be really nice. How do you like the phono pre amps? I’m also going to be using primarily for vinyl and was curious how hot are they? Where do you find you have to land the trim for each channel? I understand it depends on the vinyl pressing and how “loud” each record is. I’ve heard they are great phono pre amps but was curious from your experience. Mix sound fidelity is nice! I too am an avid Discogs collector. Have had a 1210mk2 for a long time and finally picked up a 2nd 1210 this time a mk5. This mixer seems like it checks all the boxes for basic high quality vinyl mixing needs. Cheers from Chicago.

Thanks for the kind words! I couldnt recommend the 23C enough, its been perfect for my setup. The preamps are great, youl have to do some fiddling with the gain as you said, the pressings loudness varies a lot but thats all part of mixing wax really. If you buy one i hope it suits you well! rob

Thanks man! I use a Behringer UCA202, it costs like £20 off amazon and is a great bit of kit. I just connect the master out to that and then into my laptop. Works a treat!

FYI it will depends on your cartridge , the phono output is factory limited , manual instructions says you can add 6db when removing two resistors... . i have the same setup xone 23 with two 1210mk2 and stanton 890Fs the output is great . I tried an ortofon OM Pro S and it lacks power i had to be almost full on the gain knob to be between 0 and +3db on the peak metrer , also the vinyl pressing can make difference . But it's a great mixer , just choose an high output cart :)

I guess I never considered the concept, 80% of my records were > $3 and I love almost all of them. The only reason I tend to spend more is for really new records.

Managed to get all of these each for under 5 quid, 4 of them were 4.99. Worth mentioning that this isn't including postage. I buy my vinyls second hand off discogs. You have just kgot to spend a lot of time looking through releases which aren't as popular so they go down in price ;)
