Love my special 6. Thought about ventile? Have a Keela heritage smock which is also brilliant but could take some design ideas from Buffalo

Try Arktis? My Fortis Mammoth smock has the same fibre pile lining, but with a rip stop poly-cotton outer, and the Sherpa from Fortis has a cotton outer with Polyester -wool mix fibre pile. Unfortunately, Fortis don’t make smocks like this anymore.

Hi ,new subscriber here, imo I've found /created the ultimate smock . British Army ripstop windproof field smock in woodland dpm (sewn in hood version ) painted with fabsil gold . Tough ,very breathable ,very waterproof. Bought mine unissued for 40 quid ,1 litre of fabsil gold 13 quid . It's crucial to apply the fabsil with a paint brush and really ensure every square mm is fully impregnated .I did mine 3 years ago and it's still perfect If you wanna push the boat out arktis do a version which is second to none . Great video BTW.

Ahhh me old Woolly Bully, they are top kit. I've worn one since Bosnia in the early 90's and still have mine now. They're old tech and probably need updating, I also think they're too much money now for what they are, but they are well made and UK made. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

A lot of people mentioned about the pertex getting ripped etc. Buffalo was designed for the moutains, not bushcraft. I use a helikon tex pilgrim jacket over the top of my Buffalo for that very reason when I'm in the woods.

The hood design has changed, but I'm obviously not sure whether they changed it before/after you last tried one. I've got a hood from the late '80s (from my Mountain Shirt - which is still going) and another one that I bought last week. The new one fits much better, and is seriously snug. They're similar designs, this new one is just a much better execution of the same idea. That Montane hood looks great though, I wonder if they're available separately…

Spent 11 years in military and my buffalo jacket was the best investment along with my Meindl Island Pro boots both of which lasted me years . Excellent point about the jacket being easily ripped if breaking through bush therefore an Outer layer like a goretex rain jacket is recommended to be used with it IMO.

The inner material is fibre-pile. The S6 has a heavier weight of Pertex, which is more windproof than the standard 'shirt'. It's designed to be worn next to the skin, and fit closer than the one you have. Obviously that won't suit everyone, but it works MUCH better like that. It's a shame Buffalo have faffed around with the original design in recent years, because Hamish Hamilton put a huge amount of thought into it. My S6 dates from 1991, and it doesn't have any tears. The Pertex isn't designed for going through thorns though, that's not a design fault, it's inappropriate use (the Mountain Salopettes have Cordura reinforcements, so that the Pertex isn't damaged by crampons). I have the Montane hood (I had the first garments that company made), and the original Buffalo hood, and I think the Buffalo hood is much better. I designed the Snowsled Overhead Classic, which was designed as a dedicated cragging smock, to be worn with a climbing harness (so no lower pockets), but it was popular with bushcrafters for a long time (Snowsled shut down about 3 years ago). Pertex was designed to be a synthetic form of Ventile, and will work with fibre-pile, or micro-piles (eg Paramo), much like Pertex, but it's obviously a lot tougher.

Dear Mr Black / Redbranch I read the above reply with interest. Is the buffalo S6 suitable for long distance hiking in all 4 seasons ( not just the cold months). Could it replace the layering system? Regards Imran
@JackBlack-gh5yf
@JackBlack-gh5yf Жыл бұрын
@@trytheoutdoors When Hamish Hamilton was designing the Buffalo system, he'd actually envisaged a series of layers, but the lightest fibre-pile then available really made layering redundant. It's a very versatile system, but in the summer months, I think you may well find the S6 too warm, and might want to look at lighter garments from Buffalo, a more modular micro-pile system, such as Paramo, or other systems altogether.

They are nice,but as others mentioned,they are no good for ripping through the undergrowth. I prefer my Old German parka,which I bought in 1986,and is still going strong. It’s heavier,as it’s more of a canvas,than a light weight pertex,but the lining,which is removable,to make it a lighter coat in the summer,is pretty much the same type of Pyle. Perhaps try one,and see what I mean. I think I paid £15.00 for it,back then.
