I definitely think streetlights rather than the airport ones. If a bus driver is looking down at the road (as they should be) those big halogen beams are going to blind them! The difference in colour temperature is also a bit weird. I'd use the picker-picker, get the streetlight that's already in-situ, and dot a few of those around. Those airport lights would be great as uplighters for accent lighting when you add those extra support columns in though :)

I think the reason you can add bus stops only one (right) side is because the bus doors opens only on that side. That also means that 3 of those 6 lanes going in are wasted and a single lane one way road would be more aesthetically pleasing too

Btw, you should use lane connectors on those middle nodes in the terminal area to force buses to switch lanes. Now they try to cut through each bus stop bay and get stuck behind one another. EDIT: And what I mean by this you connect the lanes like X. Instead of few long lines, how about making several shorter ones to cover your city better and use the terminal as a place to switch from one line to the other. E.g. there could be one line that goes through the pedestrian zone and all the way to farm, then one to service the surrounding residental zones + the school areas. One line to service the newer residental zone and one line which uses the main roads and continues to fish farm. That way the buses will have more coverage.
@buster2256
@buster2256 Жыл бұрын
You actually only need one lane connection from the stop-side to the other. The x would force everyone passing into the next bay and you don't want that. If you only force traffic away from the stops, you can place three or more stops in a row. ;)
@ptterz1277

9:10 I don't think you can add bus stops on both sides of the one way roads. The doors on the bus are still on the right side, so they'd be getting off in the middle of the road. In theory, this COULD allow for a bypass lane and multiple stops on the same side if those lanes were long enough and with enough nodes.
@BWalnuts
@BWalnuts Жыл бұрын
Not sure if there is a plan to, but maybe add basic or invisible paths through all the side entrances. I don't think the game recognizes them as Pedways, and the area would be more activated if peds are using them. Also try to remove the barriers by the crossings so peds don't have to walk around them to get to the other side.
@Jcpo23
@Jcpo23 Жыл бұрын
Amazing ! Thanks for letting us know about the sub-building thing ! One thing you might change to add some realism and probably efficiency is keeping transportation lines in lines. Idk a real bus or metro loop with it's opposite way. Paris metro has a loop but made of two separate lines : the 2 in the north and 6 in the south. They meet at extremities and line 2 even go further. School busses do loops but it's a one way to and from the school. From my experience most of the time the bus lines go from a hub to a proximous city or district.The stops are around arterial or collector road, sometimes a parallel one. The metro and train stations are bus hubs when they are not in a residential only district. Bus lines come also regionally but these are in replacement of trains and works almost the same with maybe more stops. Thinking again, there is a situation where I met "loops" : with one way roads but the line is not a loop, there is only some stops wich are separated from their opposite. And in city center the one way arterials always have their opposite bus way wich police love to use.

Biffa, great build and perfect use for the space. I do however think that you should look at it from the persective of the passenger for a bit. Safety is important but easy walking is also important. All the safety barriers inside stop easy movement between platforms (resulting in the stepping over the barriers you mentioned). So maybe remove some of the barriers the create gaps to walk throught. A same thing for the bikes, you placed a nice plaza but that does not have very many parking spaces. Behind the bike plaza you made a nice park with trees. However I would suggest placing more bike parking there. It is a logical extension and you would prevent unwanted parking in other areas. (Speaking as a dutchman I know the great value of enough bike parking, there is never enough).

Hi ... good first version of a custom bus hub. 5:14 I think putting the bus stops in parallel roads is the key to stop busses from slowing each other down. 8:43 These extra nodes however partly undo this - you might have higher speed limits for the left lane and restrict usage of the right lane so busses will only use the right lane in the road segment where they have their stop. 8:52 no bus stops on the other side "for some weird reason" - that weird reason is that busses usually only have doors on one side. In my hometown of Essen, Germany we used to have special models for a guided bus line that partly used tram tunnels with center platforms - but the game does not support that. 17:03 OK, bus shelters and prop line tool ... well, the roof is already providing protection from the rain. Our bus hub has a similar roof and underneath it has glass walls (like roofless bus shelters) for protection against the wind. And glass is also a good point - view corridors should not be blocked so people feel secure. Avoid assets that rather leave the impression of a border crossing. Yes, you cannot people cross everywhere and need some subtle fencing in certain placed - but Intersection Marking Tool can make the dedicated crossings more explicit and inviting. 35:59 using the hub in one direction only ... Well, what happens to the other direction? Either you have busses just stop at the side of the street, slowing each other down - this means you only want half of the benefit a bus hub can provide. Or they do not stop and your hub is losing its ability to provide massive transfer opportunites. The solution could be to split the lines into two lines each with both terminating in the hub. Your bus hub design is just made for terminating lines [a version that is not a cul-de-sac could have lines run through] and it would be a great to have a metro or rail transfer here.
@HellDuke-
@HellDuke- Жыл бұрын
Yeah, more pillars definetely required... To my eyes it still looks more or less like it's floating in the air, no way that structure would even hold up. Also I suspect glass is a separate prop then that you should be able to place. Maybe pull in the barrier and bushes inward on the Concord street side (right side if we follow the way the 2 lane one ways are going)? While the bushes aren't really preventing any entry theoretically, but to be fair nobody would care. Can't say about every country but typically nobody cares if you go inside of the bus station since tickets are checked at the bus anyway. I'd say just use street lights for the roads. Roof is too high for it to make sense to have roof lighting.

You need to put pedestrian crossings on the couplet in front of the bus hub entrances. And maybe some paths leading directly from the local streets to those crossings so that pedestrians can get there easily. The purple line should really stop when it goes through Lafayettea Heights. Getting a bus there would help with the land value. And yeah, if only there was some kind of light prop that was intended to illuminate streets at night. Something with a wide illumination radius; maybe you could get that by sticking the light on a tall pole and having it point downwards. Whoever made such an asset could call it a "road lamp post" or maybe a "street light pole" or something like that. Since it would be a newly created asset "New Street Light Pole", and since you'd be illuminating small roads and one intended for avenues just wouldn't look right you'd want a "New Street Light Small Road" variant. Now, if only I could remember where I have read that very asset name just recently... 15:02 Read: I would bring the street lights back. At least for the 1-lane bus only roads.

Very nice idea to put a bus hub there. :) I really like the glass roof. It gives the place a nice open vibe. But in contrast to this openness there's all the barrieres, closed bus shelters and so on. Since people can look after themselves and in general such hubs aren't completely blocked off with guards and barrieres anyways it would be really nice to see you open it up a more. Maybe place benches instead of shelters (since it's roofed anyways) which you could seperate by small glass walls or whatnot. And instead of the highway barrieres everywhere around the roads maybe use some planters to block of certain areas. Kind of like you already did at the end opposite of the entrance I think people should be able to move from one side of the hub to the other accross the bus roads to switch busses quickly :) And as many others also suggested: More pillars needed :D But don't get me wrong. A really nice build as it is :) *Just a bit too closed off for me ^^

I like the station concept, but there are a few things to change to make it more realistic. Cims need to be able to go from one platform to the next without having to exit the station. The crossings that are left lead to barriers. The entrance in the back is pointless. Cims can’t get to the stops. If there’s an entry, they should be able to enter. The lighting in the platforms contrasts too much with the rest of the station. It’s harsh blue light in the platforms vs natural/slightly warm light everywhere else. It’s pretty unsightly.

13:45 This is where Network Skins mod would be your best friend. You select that road type, turn off the street lights, then "upgrade" the roads you've already placed. (And all future placement of that road wouldn't have lights until you've turned them back on.) No worrying about where else you might have used that road since you're not doing anything to them, and no fussing with trying to click the road when you have other things covering it as the game would already know you're trying to click the road since you're "upgrading" and would ignore the other stuff, though having collisions off for the upgrade may be helpful so as not to accidentally delete anything that you want to keep. Don't ask me how many times I've had to learn that lesson... BOB is great for whole networks, NS is great for small sections. It's also useful for changing all of the lights in really old neighborhoods to all be the more yellowish sodium style (and reducing the number of lights in total since you can effectively turn of specific segments), and not as old neighborhoods to get that pink/champaign color, and newer modern neighborhoods to get brighter white LED style lights even with all of them using the same exact road type. Allows you to visually distinguish different areas for those night time fly over shots. Night time detailing needs some love too. 22:25 Taxi stands work great if they are used correctly. How to use them correctly is something a lot of people never bother to learn. If you have a depot at your airport or some transit hub, and you have a lot of people moving between said airport or transit hub and a big block of residential, then you'd put the taxi stand in/near the residential area to allow available taxis to be waiting at both ends of the movement (just like every other transit option available to us). Just adding taxi stands all over the place doesn't mean the taxis will go there, if there aren't any customers calling from that area then they won't use that stand, nor will they go to stands too close to the depot because they'd just go wait at the depot instead, nor will they be at properly placed stands if there aren't any taxis available, in which case, you would need more depots which is either a good problem or a bad one depending on the state of your other mass transit options. The Cims themselves do not use the Stands so you'll never see them standing around there, and if the stands themselves are constantly full, then your Cims are just not calling for taxis and you can get rid of the stand and save money. The best way to see if a Taxi Stand is appropriate to place somewhere is if you see lots of people standing on the sidewalk waiting for a cab. Typically out in front of transit buildings, parks, and monuments is where you'll see the bigger concentrations. If you have a lot of people waiting for cabs, then a stand nearby will help get taxis to already be in the general area before the cims call for one even if the stand is always empty (that would be part of the previously mentioned good problem to have, since that would mean the cabs are in constant use instead of sitting idle, which is better for your income). Full stands are bad since it shows no one is using taxis, one or two cabs in a stand is great as it shows use, but not overuse, empty stands can be good or bad depending on how many taxis are actually in use.

A fine build Biffa! Although I can't say I'm a massive fan of the tiles in the plaza area. There was a grey one you clicked on when you were searching that I thought looked much more in keeping. I think a few gaps between the barriers would be a good idea, and definitely fewer bus stops and wider gaps in each row.. not that I'm being critical of course! I love it! Very creative and definitely a new and improved Biffa (detailing version 2.0) in this latest city build... its making my PS4 version seem blander by the day! 🙄

You can adjust timing of red light of TMPE by saying that green light is Only when a vehicle is incoming. So it’s always red for the bus route when there’s nobody on this road, but instant green when a bus is incoming. Bus just have to wait 1s at red light and he then can safely go through the intersection. There is few tutorials on KZfaq on that specification of TMPE. Otherwise, the bus station is pretty realistic, maybe add more pillars on the middle to make it more realistic cause it’s a way wide roof above that. Greetings drôle France dear Biffa ツ

I think the design is awesome. But I often see that they aren't very user friendly. I'm a walker and walk in many different cities around the word. I always get super annoyed with designers who make things either look cool, budget or car friendly. As a walker I want many cut through. So extra entries and easier to walk through. I hope you can adept these a bit more to your overall design

Things like "desire paths", yeah. After too many years, my local council has finally given up and paved a muddy cut-through in a park near my home... it only saves something like 5-10 metres of walking, but everyone uses it. They obviously assumed that everyone wanted to walk to the bus stop - but they're actually all going to the pedestrian crossing next to it, and cutting across the corner to get there.

I really like it BUT you really need to do something about those barriers since they're blocking crosswalks and in general you wouldn't find barries within that type of area. I think you would find much higher sidewalks instead and the height of the sidewalks would act as a barrier keeping travellers safe. Also i think you should remove some of the cubicles so theres walkability between the platforms and it would also just lighten the impression of the area.

For the lights, you had available a standard straight street lamp, that would work in those area's. They would turn off and on, give more light as well, so wouldn't need as many. They would look better than the curved road lamps you took off.

The blue lights from the Airport DLC you used at the bus/taxi hub are Taxiway Edge Lights, and although most airports tend to cut power whenever suitable visibility is given, for the DLC they seem to say "Ah heck, who cares about power consumption anyways?" The green lights are Taxiway Center Lights, and specially at larger airports with difficult taxiway layouts are turned on and off according to the taxi clearance issued by the controllers, making it easier for the pilots just to "follow the Greens" and they'll stay on the assigned path. Just a random fact.

I would open up the guard rails at the pedestrian crossings. It would be a serious pain to constantly have to walk all the way to the end to get around the railing, only to have to walk all the way back to the crossing. In the real world, that is how a city teaches people that it’s ok to just jump the safety barriers.

I love how much fine detail you put into this using BOB/Node Controller/Intersection Marking Tool and the Network Multitool, there's a lot going on! I think it looks great overall, I do agree it could use some pillars/columns on the sides, and I think it would look better with traditional lampposts rather than runway lights, you seemed to have a few of those in your staging area but didn't use them. And yeah, maybe remove a few of the bus stop props as a solid line of so many looks a bit weird and it would help walkability. Those are all relatively minor though, I think within the limits of the game this is a really cool original build. Mmm, cool original... **goes in search of Doritos**

Hey Biffa! You probably won't see this one, but I was inspired by Eg6sy's latest map, Sapello, to post this comment. Your series, Teaville, was the reason I bought C:S and I've watched you ever since, along with other channels later on as I learned my play style. But what is truly phenomenal now is that just as you are embracing more complex detailing, separately, so I am. And I feel like a bit of a kinship as a more mature player that can still progress through, learn, and find joy in this game even after thousands of hours. So, here I am, returning to this series with excitement, hand-clapping and gratitude. You are a great and welcomed influencer in the C:S community. Keep doing you. 😊

I think some of the bollards light up at night and they would be more aesthetically pleasing than lampposts and runway lights. Also perhaps a few more pillars to support the roof would be in order. And the crash barriers in the bus station look a bit awkward and slightly overused - personally I would go without to continue promoting the openness shown by the glass roof. Otherwise I think the build is fantastic and is looking great

That looks spectacular. However, it is a bit weird, that the whole bus station is covered by an extremely large glass roof and under that roof there are waiting areas for busses and taxis with extra roofs. But all the nice places with the food trucks are unprotected for the most part. It would happen in the real world anyways, I guess. But I think the public and the food sellers would complain until they get pernission to set up some big open tents and parasols. It´s also a matter of safety. If it starts to rain, all the people who just grabbed food would run over the exit road for the busses to get under the big roof. That might lead to wet cims, mad cims and dead cims. Maybe you should ad something to prevent that.

This looks fantastic. I would suggest that it might be improved by softening the walls and barriers. That tall concrete wall around the perimeter is kind of a brutalist aesthetic for an otherwise welcoming environment and the protective barriers on the inside are more appropriate for high speed traffic. A slightly more decorative perimeter like regular fence or a nice looking brick wall would be more appealing. On the inside, maybe planters or something like that in place of the highway barriers. Just my two cents though, great looking build and video.

Yes, the highway crash barriers (armco?) inside seem completely out of place in a bus terminal. You should have something like planters or a small fence.

Apart from the obvious lack of pillars this would be a massive bus terminal, and a very pleasant one. Pity the roads can't take as many bus stops as the bus terminal assets. Maybe using multiple of the small new 4-5 stop terminal from this DLC might have done the trick, some "jiggery-pokery" with the roof or through BOB could also open them up.

Really nice work done here, Sir Biffa 👍 One proposal in order to improve your traffic flow at the entrance/exit of your freely designed bus hub is to change the standard traffic light to a timed one and set it as a light which only acts on demand so when a bus is waiting on a lane longer than ~5-10 sec it switches to the phase for letting the buses out for just a few seconds. The same setting could be done for the crossing left-turn lane for letting buses/taxis in. So for most of the time the throughpassing traffic could just flow free and mass transit would be still prioritized by forcing a change of lightphase after a certain time on which the bus/taxi is waiting on the lane.

Dear Biffa, I think you are an excellent cities skylines player. The only thing i would change about the build is to add additional structural support for the glass roof. In the real world, the structural steel required to support an unbraced span that big would be substantial to say the least.

In my opinion, instead of using concrete walls / noise barriers and traffic barriers, you should use bollards. Not only that it looks way better and underlines the openness of the bus terminal you're building, but it's also more realistic and practical for your citizens. When they have to get from one bus to another, they might have to walk hundreds of meters because they have to walk around the barriers. By having these traffic barriers in their way, you're basically teaching them to ignore safety barriers and just climb over them.

Random tangent here but it just hit me today that in all these years, Paradox Games have never added a combed cycle path & footpath to the vanilla game assets, despite that being far more common in real life than cycle only highways & surely very easy to design & code. In fact they basically went 'let's add cyclists' with the After Dark DLC then never looked at that side of the transport picture again.

You should make cuts in the barriers where the crosswalks are, so pedestrians would not need to make a big detour. In addidtion, change those two-lane-roads into one-lane-roads and may double them for the same throughput. The busses do not have doors on both sides to fit your concept. Saying that, maybe look for a "leaf-shaped" road design instead (big road in and through, which works as a dispatcher to multiple short busstop lanes, which lead into a surrounding outgoing lane). Oh and please place down more pillars.

Needs more pillars and I would say removing a small section of barriers right besides the bus stops. The "implied path" is being blocked by them and would result in irl injuries from people trying to hop over them instead of walking all the way around them or trying to squeeze between the barrier and bus stop benches.

I like the idea of this handmade bus/taxi terminal, yet it doesn't look like a safe space to me... guess it's been mentioned before: the roof looks like it must collapse any second under its own weight: it needs more pillars to look more realistic. Also: the pillars come along with lights which then would help out avoiding any black spots and you could get rid of the airport lights (which do not really look good in my opinion). Imagine you're arriving at that bus stop terminal at night and there are black spots everywhere where creepy people could lurk... Also: the city is yet too small to handle such a high roof, I think. Either the surrounding area is being developed into high rise buildings or you should lower the pillars/roofs to a more reasonable size. Otherwise it just looks oversized I think...

I really like the way this turned out! It make sense that you can only get the bus stop on one side of a one way bus lane because of the doors, you know. But It works as a passing lane for the other buses I guess. Something I would like to add. Instead of cross walks, maybe pedestrian bridges? I believe it would help not make the glass top feel so tall. And maybe less aggresive barriers? What do you think? 🤷‍♂
@gwalla
@gwalla Жыл бұрын
The road barriers don't make much sense dead center in the pedestrian areas. It would make more sense to have only short segments on the outside edge of curves, placed right up next to the roadway to prevent buses from hopping the curb and carmageddoning some people. I don't really get the rationale for all those tall walls, really. It's an open-air bus terminal, access is part of the point! And between the concrete walls and rows of bushes you've kind of eliminated the sidewalks around the facility. Ironically the place where a physical barrier seems most appropriate is where you used the least, the "impenetrable bushes" to wall off that little road, and they're probably plenty for that purpose.

Biffa, I like the build...but you definitely need more pillars along the sides....maybe if you already have some big ones that are similar to what you have on the ends or something like that? Also, I think the main reason you can't add more bus stops than what you have is you're using one way streets. If a bus goes to stop on the other side, people won't be able to get on the bus since the opening will be in the center of the road.

I love what you're doing here, but the crosswalks line up weird with the concrete barriers. Pedestrians have to walk all the way to the end to get around the barriers, but back to the middle to use the crosswalk, for each bus lane. Crossing multiple lanes at the crosswalks without hopping barriers really increases the distance they need to walk.
