Same! Even as a kid growing up far away from the US but in a small town, the whole suburb satire landed and was hilarious. Nosy, meddling neighbours vs the oddball (or just new neighbours) is a global experience. Funny, though: As a child, I wanted to be a part of the adventure, spying and climbing all over the place to catch the potentially bad guys. As an adult, I'd rather ask the teens if I could join the sideline if I chipped in for the pizza 😁

There was a lot of improvision on the set, in no small part because it was filmed during a writer's strike. Like the moment where Bruce Dern accidentally peels off the wallpaper at the Klopecks' house and then tries to put it back was a genuine accident from Dern, but Joe Dante thought it was hilarious, so he kept it in.

She was not happy at such a remark. A few months ago I helped him put up a simple coat rack mount in his hallway (just two screws), because he did not know how to use a screwdriver, so at least there's probably no chance of suspicious basement furnaces being constructed. :D

In my opinion, Joe Dante is a true author. You can immediately recognize his huge personality as a filmaker by whatching any of his works. He's always had a great love for horror and sci-fi B movies of the 50's (the legendary Roger Corman was his mentor). All his filmography is full of references to those films and he's always paying tribute and homage to them. I truly recomend you any other of his gems: Piranha, The Howling, Innerspace, Twilight Zone: The Movie, Explorers, Matinee... (you've already watched "Gremlins"). By the way: you didn't say much about the amazing soundtrack by legendary Jerry Goldsmith, who composed the music for all Dante's movies since Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983) untill his death.

The "doctor" was Henry Gibson: if you saw "The Blues Brothers", he played one of the Neo Nazis. I'm very happy that you mention Bruce Dern, one of my lifelong favorite actors. He's done everything - starring roles, bit parts, drama, comedy, and he nails it every time. A VERY underrated actor, whose films you should check out. I won't suggest any - there's too many to choose from, but I first saw him in either "Silent Running", "Support Your Local Sheriff", or "The Wild Angels", when I was a kid. He's actually been in 3 Tarantino films, playing small parts: "Hateful Eight", "Django Unchained", and "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood", and is still very busy.

I wouldn't say Dern's underrated because he's earned two Oscar nominations for "Coming Home" (Best Supporting Actor) and "Nebraska" (Best Lead Actor). I like him too in stuff like "Smile", "The Driver", "Last Man Standing", "The Astronaut Farmer", "Black Sunday", and "The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant". Even bit parts like "Marnie" and "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte". Speaking of "Nebraska", Rance Howard (father of Ron Howard, who produced this film), who plays one of the detectives here, played one of Dern's brothers in that film.

I stumbled across this movie in the early 90s and I was glad I did since I probably watched this 10 times already. Another old comedy with lots of star power that most haven't heard of is called "Nothing But Trouble".

In California v. Greenwood, the Supreme Court ended up ruling in favor of investigators and held that “the Fourth Amendment does not prohibit the warrantless search and seizure of garbage left for collection outside the curtilage of a home.” The case involved the protections extended by the 4th Amendment and the limits of the exclusionary rule. Here’s why that’s important. The state of California argued that the trash at the curb is outside the “curtilage,” or area of reasonable control, of the homeowner. It is not within the protection of the 4th Amendment, for any passerby could have access to it.

Art is played by comedian Rick Ducunum. His movie credits include "dude in the man hole in "Die Hard" telling headquarters to shut the power down". Also "drunk guy in Groundhog's Day who was riding around with Bill Murray" He has some pretty funny stand up.

41:24 you’re absolutely right that this was the same backlot where they filmed “Desperate Housewives.” I think “Leave it to Beaver” was also filmed there, or another show from that era. Maybe it was “The Adams Family.”

I love this movie, I miss Tom Hanks the comedian. Turner and Hooch, Splash, The Money Pit, BIG, Dragnet, and A League of Their Own are all great. Rick Ducomman (Art) IMO is hilarious, he usually is a bit player, has been on lots of TV and some big movies like Hunt for Red October, Scary Movie, Last Action Hero, Groundhog Day, The Last Boy Scout, Encino Man. I remember him from a Canadian kids show called Zig-Zag (1980-88) with Terry David Mulligan.

So happy this won the poll and I got to see you watch this, one of my favourite movies from the 80's. I also love Art, might be the funniest character of the film for me but everyone is great in it and you can quote it for days, I'm sure you'll watch this again several times in future, it's too much fun not to. This is about the 7th appearance of Rick Ducommun on the channel, so you've seen him before for sure. "A thermostat on a home furnace; is that supposed to go to 5,000 degrees, you think?" 😂

My parents wouldn't let me see Ghostbusters when it came out, but they took me to this at age 10 and it scared the everloving shit out of me. Good job, mom and dad! Ghosts aren't real and so aren't truly scary, but I've been looking over my shoulder for Klopeks for three decades now.

OMFG I just noticed and then realized something! @ 12:55 when they’re in Walter’s house, you can see some framed photos in the shot. One is of Walter but another is Lucille Ball! That’s when I realized that Walter is played by Gale Gordon who had some guest starring roles on I Love Lucy and then later costarred with her on The Lucy Show AND Here’s Lucy!! So her picture there was just a fun reference placed by the set decorators!!

Most kids watched Goonies, Ninja Turtles, Iron Giant or Home Alone. I did too but I LOVED THIS movie as a child. It just felt more mature to me given the feel of it but the comedy was on point with such relatively dark subject matter. A lot of eerie elements perfect for the spooky season as a wholesome, family type film. If you wanna see a crazy kids movie from the 80's watch the animated film The Secret Of NIMH from 1982. That movie will scare you even as an adult. Rated G for Geesus Christ.

Reading this comment it hit me that The Secret of NIMH has real stakes. That's what's missing in most movies nowadays. Like Marvel movies or John Wick type movies. You know they can undo everything with time travel, bulletproof lapels, etc.

The part where Hanks and his buddy first walk up the the house has the original music from My Name Is Nobody by Ennio Morricone. It was a tribute to Sergio Leone with the close-ups of the neighbors' (and dog's) eyes.
