Tom Hanks portrays suburbanite Ray Peterson, whose plans for a peaceful vacation are disturbed by a creepy new family on the block, in this outrageous suspense-comedy directed by Joe Dante. When a neighborhood grouch suddenly disappears, the men are convinced the ramshackle house hides some hideous clues. Armed with assault rifles, high-powered binoculars and a shovel, they decide to see for themselves exactly what is going on in the Klopek place. I really miss that Tom Hanks. That shuffle down the little stairs was golden. The guy displayed such great comedic chops in movies like this.

Most of this film was ad-lib, as it was shot during the 1988 writers strike. The actors had the base script, but engaged in quite a lot of banter they created on the spot.

Yep, and they actually blew up the house when Tom Hanks was inside of it. He suffered massive burns, but it makes the film seem more realistic.

CLASSIC!!! 😎😍 Without a joke one of my all-time favorite films and only seen again 2 weeks ago. I like Tom Hanks and the rest of the movie is great too. Joe Dante is a great director and I can watch the film over and over again.

What I still find funny after watching this movie for most of my life, is that they saw that big furnace that goes up to 5,000 degrees, obviously one that’s bigger than any other furnace they’ve seen, and they still don’t just take a peek in there just start digging

One of my favorite movies of all time. I mean, they made a movie centering around a small corner of a neighborhood lol. That's it! And yet, it was suspenseful and exciting. Amazing.

Now imagine if Walter Fielding told Benny to evacuate the area if they were confiscating the phone calls from Montgomery Schrapp’s house. Not to Mention activating a carbon subnitride torch after hitting a bottom with red phosphorus and nitrocellulose inside. Talk about a marrow melter (6th degree burns).
