I often sneak out of my home after dark, but I steal a knife out of the kitchen drawer. When I'm home alone (from 3pm to 5pm) I love to just leave my house and go to the forest. In winter, it's already sunset by then. I always take a huge steak knife.

Those toilets have been torn down now. I live in Bury and the way they have redesigned that part of the bus station is quite unique, looking at it now you would never have known there was toilets there or a murder, no more creepy vibes walking through the station anymore, just a bright airy walk through section. 👍

Honestly, this is one of the saddest stories I've stumbled across in my KZfaq true crime dives. She was older, on her own for the first time at that terminal, missed her bus, just wanted to make a wee... viciously murdered. That's just not right. I mean, murder is never right, but this just seems extra-wrong. And a woman would normally feel safer in a highly trafficked area. Safety in numbers, no? But just look at the number of people who were around, and noticed something off, saw something suspicious, heard screaming... and just went about their business? Being in a high-traffic, public place causes diffused responsibility. More people, less response. That poor, poor woman. I am so glad that her killer was eventually identified.

Personally, I would never have gone to an isolated area at night. Not victim blaming, just because it increases your risk of these crimes.

She needed the loo and had to wait 20 minutes for her next bus, not including the time to get home after that, that’s a long time for a 66 year old woman to wait.

Bit like bikes getting stolen in broad daylight when there are loads of people around. I was walking in London and I heard a DV incident in a house and people walked by thinking nothing and some were women. I did report it but I felt like I was the only one bothered. I have reported other DV incidents including my neighbours only to be told by the women to 'mind my own business'. So you can be abused if you report it too

I live in the city and learned there isn't safety in numbers. People naturally assume someone else will take care of it , call police or "its none of our business and if we get involved we'd be in harms way". I can't get mad at people not physically interfering because it will get you killed trying to be a hero. Most people aren't equipped or trained for it. Also police tend to ignore calls. Ive called emergency services justice to watch police not show up an hour later. Ive been sexually assaulted on a train and not one man got up to help me. Ive watched a man beat his gf while the baby was in her arms. I called police just to watch cops slowly drive pass because they weren't assigned to the call and it was across the street from a hospital. It sucks how at the end of the day, its all circumstantial, humans are very flawed so nothing is consistent when it comes to safety

@@AwfulDog1 as a man I seldom worry about going to secluded areas to take a leak, my heart goes out to this woman and all women in fact for being prohibited about things like this ,things I , and a lot of men take for granted. Poor shirley was merely making a visit she couldn't ignore, the beast was taking advantage of her vulnerability, I hate that in men.this insect deserves to be hurt especially in the light of the subsequent attack on the 11yr old.

One thing that really annoys me is when someone is in prison for one thing and are then tried and found guilty for another and are given more years for that crime it should NOT run concurrently! The years should be added on. Otherwise to me they are just serving their time for one crime really. Yes they may have two added. To their record but that isn't enough! Xxxxx

I remember when I had my now 13-year-old son at the Reynolds Army Community Hospital at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. She came to visit us as soon as I got back home in Lawton on the Greyhound bus from Charleston, South Carolina. I couldn't contact her all that night and she was supposed to arrive at 10pm on March 30, I believe was the date. I was calling tons of bus stations, finding out if she should have transferred or if a bus broke down. I spent ALL NIGHT that night in tears, scared something awful had happened to my tiny little 4'6" momma. Eventually, I found out she'd disembarked at the wrong station. The people there got her on the proper bus the next day and she ended up being fine. But there is something absolutely horrifying when you can't contact your loved ones whom you KNOW are supposed to be somewhere and they don't arrive. Particularly when they are older and at a physical disadvantage. This story is so sad. This could be so many other women. And the thought that predators are out there, waiting for a victim like this, is extremely distressing.

I remember being a tot & there being police tape up across the toilets for what seemed like months. The toilets were never re opened & the other lot of toilets around the corner a teen girl was raped in so they closed them too. It's scary to think I've used them loos, being from Bury myself. I don't want to come across rude but the loo entrence was actually inside the bus station not outside....the bus station used to be like a u shape, the loos were in the bend....now its been opened up to allow buses to go straight through up to Fairfield, Rochdale, Jericho etc rather than going around the bus station, then around ot again on the main road. (If you're from Bury you know, if not then it sounds so complicated, but basically the toilets entrance was within the interchange but they were on their own, not near any of the bus stops as they were up the straight sides of the 'U' shape. Poor Shirley. :( I can’t imagine the pain her grandson and the rest of her family must have felt losing her like that. It’s just horrible!

Thank you for covering this case Eleanor. I live in Bury and I remember walking past here all the time when I was younger and my Mum telling me this story and it always seemed like a haunting place to me.
