When my great grandma was dying of lung cancer and it went to her brain she bascially became an Alzheimer's patient with memory loss. She once asked if I was adopted and my grandma answered I came from the cabbage patch.

Lol I was 5 in 1983 but my grandmother was a seamstress with 40 years of experience and was already making bank doing quilts. The cabbage patch kids were easy to make so she just made them herself to order and people would buy them from her to avoid lines and inflated prices. The kids didn't know the difference.

Truth about the cabbage patch kids Xavier Robert's actually stole the idea from the original creator which was a young female folk art student from Kentucky. Xavier met the actual creator and bought a few dolls from her and sold them at a shop he worked at. Had her come down there to sell more of her dolls but then he started to under sell her while she was there, so she left and a few weeks later she sent him a cease and assist letter to Xavier demanding he give her the dolls back and he basically told her to fuck off and he then started making his own dolls with her exact designs. So in hindsight fuck Xavier Roberts

Glad you posted this comment. So few people know that fact. She tried suing him too, but they ended up settling out of court for an undisclosed amount. But the craziest part is that Robert’s directly stole Martha Nelson Thomas’ physical dolls and ideas for selling them (bar for bar) but had the audacity to try to sue the creators of Garbage Pail Kids for copy right infringement. 🥴 If this sounds interesting, you should watch the documentary Billion Dollar Babies: The True Story of Cabbage Patch Kids.

McDonald’s used to be a small company with 2 owners and somebody came in and basically stole everything they had. Albeit he did pay each of them 1 million dollars but even then he still took everything they worked on and even tried rewriting the history. It’s a crazy story

My grandmother actually worked in a toy store at the time of these riots. She never saw any full-on fist fights breaking out but she did see a lot of screaming happening. And she was one of those people who had to throw out the cabbage dolls so that way people wouldn't maul each other to death.

My godfather took me and my little sister to Babyland here in Georgia when we were young thinking we would love it. I was terrified. We got to see the whole birthing ceremony (or whatever they call it). The actors were so serious like it was a real medical procedure. Like it was a real life or death scenario. I remember a woman getting handed the doll and she started crying she was so happy. I started crying. I was terrified.

i remember getting a Cabbage Patch Kid when i was little, and me, being the blunt little child i was, i looked at it and was like "this thing is ugly, i don't want it" and my parents were trying to sell me on it, being like "it comes with adoption papers like you did" because i guess being adopted would make me more sympathetic towards a Cabbage Patch Kid... also worth noting, this was in the late 2000's, so the Cabbage Patch Kid craze had been long gone by this point, so it's not like my parents got trampled to death trying to get me one and i'm being an ungrateful little shit, lol.

As a former cabbage patch kid fan, lol, what I loved as a kid was the birth certificate it came with, the baby powder smell, some had a special mouth hole for a pacifier and a bottle and all the accessories it had. Strollers, car seats, high chairs etc so to a little girl this was about as real as it got in the 80's

The Babyland General Hospital and “birth” of a Cabbage Patch Kid is one of the weirdest things Ive ever witnessed in my life, yet it was also strangely artistic, soulful, and dedicated to the storytelling. I’ve been multiple times, and now its blowing up on Tiktok because of its peculiar nature and how it’s inconspicuously located on a bright green field in a plantation-style building in upstate Georgia. If you ever happen to be around the area, you just have to go. It’s one of those things that you need to witness at least once in real life. And “adopting” one directly from the hospital was (unsurprisingly) NOT cheap, it was like $300 for a singular Cabbage Patch Kid last time I went

I honestly liked the craziness of Black Friday at midnight, hundreds of people swarming around you, you are looking for specific things like hunting for treasure. It was chaos, and exciting. (but god damn working in retail on Black Friday sucked)

Yea, I miss the chaos of it all. People would line up the night before after Thanksgiving and wait for stores to open. Most Black Fridays I got to spend doing a boring job that didn’t interact with the public much. The one time I did work in a big store during Black Friday was a Toys R’Us when I was just 18 and I said never ever again. My heart goes out to anyone in retail during those dark days. For the most part, though … it was a spectacle. One of those “you just have to experience it to get it” things. The first night I hung out with my then boyfriend (now husband) was after a night of clubbing back in 2004, and we met up with my sister and went to Walmart to watch the Black Friday chaos while still pretty sloshed (had a DD). We had a blast watching all these grown adults fighting over toys, some falling over themselves trying to rush and be the first to grab something as soon as it was brought out. It was like a sport. There for a while, KZfaq videos showing Black Friday madness provided entertainment, as well. Someone would always be recording the chaos. Nowadays, though … everything is online (especially with Cyber Monday and members for certain services getting an extra few days in advance to shop the sales) and you can go into a store during a Black Friday sale and it feels like every other normal day.

One lone kid crawled his way through the green and red carnage that befell the patch that day. Years later, still haunted by the nightmares of that fateful day the surviving cabbage patch kid now shares his stories on KZfaq under the name Papa Meat.

I remember my grandma telling me a story one time about my grandpa going out during the Cabbage Patch Kids craze to get one for my mom (who was only 2 at the time) and went through hell to do so. One of the best and most interesting stories I've ever heard because of the sheer 'what the hell' factor to it. And the fact that it's even real

The cabbage patch birthing field reminds me of that horrific scene out of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978). Where the main character wakes up to find a clone of him growing in a veiny vegetable pod.

When I was little, my grandma took me to the cabbage patch. You get to make your own doll and you get to see them be "born" from a cabbage. My parents were poor but my grandma wanted me to experience whatever fun kid things she could find. Honestly, it was so much fun. I was a little old for baby dolls but I loved the hands on experience. I recommend it even if you're an adult.

I'm old as dirt compared to your average fan and I remember cabbage patch dolls. They were kind of like status symbols for kids, I know that sounds weird. But I remember a girl bringing her cabbage patch doll to church and I was like "she thinks she's better than me."

I feel like while not as hysteric, the Pokemon craze of the 90's was pretty massive. From the games, to the trading card game and show, it was hitting every corner of the market for kids. Now it's so big it's got vending machines in almost every grocery store and mall in my state.

It became a big fad for a bit but Pokemon never caused this kind of insanity. In fact it was the opposite. The kids like it but the parents hated it; especially Christians.

I don't think there ever was any actual hysteria surrounding Pokemon, probably partially because it's actually real obvious why kids think it kicked ass and thus didn't need the cultish weirdness like those CPK. If you ask a kid why they like Pokemon, they'd say "because this one's a cute turtle that also shoots bubble bullets that explode, and he's fighting this dragon that shoots energy beams and does flying tackles at Mach 5, and we'll all get to be friends and go on adventures". Meanwhile the CPK have no rationale behind them other than "it's an uglier version of normal baby dolls that come with a piece of paper, which lets you experience the joys of raising a special needs kid with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome".

I remember the tickle me Elmo fights of the 90s. It was absolutely insane. I was already around 9 or 10 and passed the sesame Street days. But dear god people lost their sh#t over that freaking toy. I remember my mom saying she saw people fighting at the local toys r us during that year it dropped. I just wanted the megazord from the current power rangers series.

My grandma managed to get 4 or 5 of these for my cousins, my brother, and myself- without ever setting foot in a store. You could mail order these. Apparently mail order worked like a lottery system because of the scarcity, so orders weren't guaranteed. Even so, she was able to buy plenty and avoid the madness.

Pretty sure Squishmallows are the new Cabbage Patch Kid/Beanie Baby. My God kids are crazy for those things, even adults are. While Christmas shopping I overheard a kid trying to convince her parents to buy her one. I was in the same aisle looking at some plushies to get ideas of what to get my daughter. Anyway she comes over with this Day of the Dead styled Squishmallow and this is the part that got my attention and almost bust out laughing. She in a serious tone says "Mum I need this." Her mum said she didn't and they were there looking for present for her friend's birthday party. Then the kid put on her serious negotiation voice. "No, I am serious. I need this for school." So her mum asks how in the world would school require her to buy a Squishmallow. The girl says "I need this for my homework. I have to do a speech on Day of the Dead and show something from it to my class and this is from Day of the Dead." Her mum said she does not need a Squishmallow for her speech. The kid gets more serious and says "You don't understand. I. NEED. THIS. I. WILL. FAIL. IF. I. DON'T. GET. THIS." Like she full on did the slow spaced out words and condescending tone as if her mum was too stupid to comprehend how badly she "needed" this Squishmallow. Her mum was getting annoyed at this point and said "No. You don't need a Squishmallow for your speech, you just want it for yourself. It isn't even anything to do with Day of the Dead, they have just copied the art style from it. Put it back now. We will find something another time that is actually from Day of the Dead." The kid full on had the shits now and reiterated that she "needed" this specific Squishmallow or she would fail and how unfair her mum was being. I think she was around 10-12 years old. Her mum just said no again and then made her put it back. The thing was $20 too. It was so hard not to laugh at this kid, thankfully it wasn't obvious I was listening as the toys I was looking through was a complete mess and hard to find what I was looking for so I looked busy. LMAO sorry about this essay, this video made me think of it as it only happened on Friday. I just thought it was too funny not to share as you mentioned how kids try anything to get what they want and I immediately thought back to this. Glad the mum didn't give in to the bullshit though.

I remember these times. I went Christmas shopping with my grandma for my sisters and she got two the store had a security guard walk us to her car and he had her lock it in her trunk and go straight home not to stop. This has easily become one of my favorite channels. I love the things you cover and how you cover them. I was born in 1989 please keep the vibes of the 90's alive & well. Like how u cover how things were when u were growing up. Like garbage pale kids, goosebumps, are you afraid of the dark. I had cabbage patch kids from when my mother was little. I had like three of them. Vintage ones. Never tore them up. We still have them hidden in a storage room on the property my brother was given. The other "cool old thing " we had was Mom and Dad both had collected beanie babies when younger. My brother collected early Pokemon cards and after looking through his sleeve book of cards, he had several original art Charizards.

so i grew up in the town that Cabbage Patch was created in and when i was little i used to go to this walkthrough that would display the babies. at the end of the walkthrough was a tree where every hour a worker would come out and “perform a birth” out of the tree. the tree would display an ultrasound until it was time for the baby to be born. as i kid i ate this up but when i started describing it to my friends at college they were absolutely horrified. now a days the cabbage patch has their own mansion in my town and is the only reason why people come to the town
