Alec, that is an absolute beautiful and inspiring place, you created there. I bet most the musicians feel exactly the way, you want them to feel and get into creation mood easily at your place! I would be so much interested to see tutorials from your work as well - how do you record things, how you mix them, all that. Thanks for your work!

I hope this doesn't come across as rude but my biggest question is... How do you afford all that gear? I'm a fairly successful musician but the idea of throwing hundreds of thousands towards a space and gear just seems crazy to me as there is such a lack of local bands in Northern Ireland that would ever be able to pay for sessions.
@alecbrits
@alecbrits Жыл бұрын
Hey Peter, that is not rude at all and totally valid to ask. It’s taken ten years to get to this point, 6 days a week in the studio, combined with wedding gigs, bar gigs and not spending very much on my personal life. The studio currently goes out for an affordable rate here in liverpool, so it appeals to full time musicians who are not yet signed. It’s a niche market, but that is currently where the studio operates. Hope this answers your comment. :)

Hey Alec, as to your last point... I think having the console and recording "hub" in the same room with the performers, definitely gives the performers a sense that everyone is in this together, and sets them more at ease. But, I was wondering how you feel about actually trying to get sounds when you are in the room with the instruments and you can't really isolate what you are hearing on the channel from what you are hearing in the room, especially with drums?
@alecbrits
@alecbrits Жыл бұрын
Hey Wes! :) it’s a challenge with drums for sure, but I do a couple of test takes, adjust and then keep on going. If I need to have a fast day, then I hire in a drummer who comes in for an hour in the morning, while I get levels and EQ adjustments. :) other than that, if I’m unsure, I’ll avoid using EQ/compression on the way in then sort out the processing in the box.

An idea I had for this, but have been unwilling to spend money on, is to use in-ear monitors to listen to what the microphone is hearing while I'm moving it. But properly high-fidelity IEMs are spendy, and a wireless system for more convenient use is, too!

Love your studio space mate, so nice and cozy 👌🏼 I’ve been on a studio monitor journey for the last few years and currently with the amphion two18’s which I’ve been liking but sometimes find them hard to feel the music emotionally but have been great for mixing and mastering. Have you heard them? If so, how would you compare the ATC’s? Thinking I haven’t landed on my dream monitor as of yet and love your work. ✌🏼
@alecbrits

Thanks so much Ben! :) I have not spent much time with the Amphion monitors, once I heard the ATC’s in this room, I knew it was the right fit for me. I went from Adam to Unity Rocks to Barefoot Footprints, then finally ATC’s and they worked for me. :)

Why are you regretting not purchasing the active AEA R88 Mic over the passive one? I'm just about to pull the trigger on one of these bad boys

The self noise of the passive one is a little high for me personally. For drums it’s ace, but I’d love to record piano and acoustic guitars with it. :)
@mymtzs

Hello Alec, what an inspiring place to create a record ! I've got some doubts on the applicabilities of the Coles mics and wondering now if you could help me as I am about acquiring a pair. Have you tried them to record acoustic guitar environments (guitar and vocals/room ambience) using the blumlein configuration? I like their sound a lot, but almost all sound examples I found are on their use in drums and I'd really like to get a feedback on how they work for the particular use I said. I take the chance to also thank you for sharing you gear and your talent :)
@alecbrits
@alecbrits Жыл бұрын
Coles are great for acoustic and vocals. :) I’m a really big fan of them on upright piano too. Just make sure you pair them with a pre that can give enough clean gain for delicate sources. Jason Isbell and Sturgil Simpson records are all Coles on vocals and acoustics. :)

Hey Alec!! :) I Love Your Channel Bro!!! Such great content and reviews!! :) So so very helpful! I have been a subscriber of yours I believe for a few years now but I've never written a comment or a question until now so I hope you don't mind because I would really appreciate your advice. I recently purchased a new Telefunken 251, a new Neve 1073SPX, and a new TubeTech CL-1B, and I am very grateful to have this gear and to have finally accomplished this goal after many years of waiting. Anyways, after watching so many of your videos and reviews and the high quality of your work, your ear, and your taste in sound I highly value your advice and opinion. So, the issue is that I am considering buying an API 512v for my 251 because I hear they are more open and up front sounding which is what I like, and anyways, my question is since you have used both, yours being a DPX, but the same as SPX, just Dual, what do you think of my thought on this and what is your honest opinion and preference, concerning vocals, between your Neve 1073DPX and the API 512v on Vocals?? And I guess that's all. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and I really look forward to your reply, opinion, and advice. Till then, Cheers!! :) >>>>>>> Sincerely, - CALEB SHAW -
@alecbrits
@alecbrits Жыл бұрын
Hey Caleb! :) thanks so much for the kind words! My advice would be to get the 512V in addition to the the SPX. that way you can blend the 1073 EQ with the API tone.

Hey Alec ! Since you own a lot of different mics, what’s your favorite on drum overheads ?
@alecbrits
@alecbrits Жыл бұрын
Good question, but in honesty it depends on the project. Usually the U67’s give me a solid result, but the Cole’s 4038’s often are correct for the kind of music I work on a lot of the time. If there is a busy session with a lot of inputs, the AEA R88 comes to the rescue and delivers the most consistent results across most genres.
@soundman1402
@soundman1402 Жыл бұрын
Also take a look at the Austrian Audio CC8 SDCs for overheads! I just got a pair last summer, and I'm immensely pleased with them. I got them for use in a live performance, but I recorded it; when I heard the multitracks back in the studio, I was floored! They're just really smooth on top. A little dark, but because of that smoothness, you can boost the highs without any nasty artifacts.
