The nearest site to me that I know of isn't a standing stone, it's a prehistoric hillfort. It's called Fallburn and is just off the A73. If the weather suits we walk the dog up the path to it but you have to keep dogs on their lead as it's grazing land. One time we couldn't enter the hillfort as the sheep were in residence.

Another very informative video. It's good that it's still there, standing as a testament to the ancient people. Thanks for this.

@@BeforeCaledonia I'm sure it's dated at 6,000 years, pre-Stonehenge, & similar age to Thornborogh Henges nr Ripon, (now open to the public).

I know the monolith is in a church yard, I have seen photos of it online and it's in the Standing with Stones film, I am sure it has a metal cap on top.

I'd never heard of this ancient stone before. It fascinates me that this is still standing regarding the times we live in. Thousands of years can weather a stone but it's humans and the perceptions of the time we live in currently that always make me wonder if these stones will make it unscathed for future generations to gaze upon.

Interesting the entomology of the word Stane - as near me in Surrey a little place on the Thames, more famous for a comedy film than it's impressive history unfortunately Staines-Upon-Thames. According to local historians the name Staines was Anglo Saxon for Stones, which would make sense as Staines was reputed to have a stone circle called the Negen Stones, which are now gone but.... Up the Thames at Kingston, there is the Kings Stone, a ancient stone, supposed to be part of a circle that once existed in the area but was used by Anglo Saxon Kings as a Coronation stone much like the more famous Stone of Scone.

Look up Balfarg Henge in Fife which is basically a huge neolithic stone circle now in the middle of a modern housing estate, a couple of the huge stones still remain.

The Camus Stane was a separate monolith that stood to the north. Just to the south were the 'Cat Heaps' two massive cairns that were plundered for road material. Apparently in the gardens of houses to the south lie the bases of these cairns. When the road was being constructed in the 18th century, burials were found extending for a mile, in cists and in rock-cut graves. Weapons of bronze and Iron were found, although where they are now, I have no idea. Mounds yielding burials have been found over the ground as far as Mortonhall, where the famous scabbard was found. A scatter of Roman coins was found during the construction of Frogstone Road. This is one of the largest prehistoric "cemeteries" found in Scotland, but has never been properly investigated!!
@christopheraliaga-kelly6254
@christopheraliaga-kelly6254 2 ай бұрын
PS. Our ancestors always assumed Prehistoric cemeteries were from a battle, but this was from a cemetery that was in use for centuries, possibly from Neolithic to Early Christian times. The Old Gaelic word for battle was "cat" or "caiy" hence the names for the stones.
