I shot in the first Garand match at Perry back in '98. I continued to attend both Grand matches and 1903/Bolt action matches for several years. Was awarded several Bronze and one Silver medal over those years. Haven't shot at Perry since 2008, but am thinking about it again. It was always a fun time.

When you walk on the ranges at Camp Perry, you are walking in the footsteps of Hero's who shot there: GySgt. Carlos Hathcock (author of "Marine Sniper, 93 confirmed kills), and Capt. Herbert W. McBride(author of "A Rifleman went to War" and "The Emma Gees"), and many others. I resisted as long as I could, and bought an M1 Garand from the CMP North Store 5 years ago. I've shot it in the CMP Garand match, and now I see the attraction. :) If you have an M1, get out to Perry and shoot in this match. If you don't have one, why are you waiting? ;)

Yes! Shooting has so many great attributes for everyone. For kids it instills great responsibility. For older folks it has many physical assets that keep old age at bay. You are 💯 correct.

Good stuff. At 19:24 they talk about Shane Butler of the Marine Corps Team winning with an M1A. Interesting that he's no longer with the Marine Corps Team. He left in '22, when the AMU recruited him. I've shot with him in a few matches, great dude. Sucks that the Marine Corps rotates shooters through forcing them out after 3 years, while the AMU will let shooters stay for an entire career. Probably why they usually kick our (USMC) butts...lol

My goal is to go in 2024, I just got my first garand at the south store and right after my purchase I went straight to talladega and shot it. Love at first ping! I’m really anxious to go in 2024 and it would be my first time ever shooting in a match. I’ve always shot for recreation and practice

Still can’t believe the M1917 STILL isn’t allowed in the American service rifle match. Numerically it was our primary issue in ww1 please allow the M1917
@CivilianMarksmanshipProgram
@CivilianMarksmanshipProgram 2 жыл бұрын
The M1917 Rifle has not been authorized for use in modern Service Rifle competition because virtually all competitors have preferred to use semi-auto M16/AR15-type or M14/M1A-type rifles. The M1917 Rifle is authorized for use in CMP Games Vintage Military Rifle events where it is quite popular but it has not been authorized for Service Rifle events because there has been almost no demand for this. If there is a genuine interest in authorizing the M1917 .30-06 Rifle for Service Rifle competitions, such a request could be presented to the CMP Rules Committee via email to competitions@thecmp.org when it meets to consider rule changes for 2023 rulebooks.

@@CivilianMarksmanshipProgram I find it kind of a shame that the 1917 can't be entered into the 3/4 gun aggregate as a substitute for the Springfield. I own a Garand, a 1917, and other rifles meeting the Modern and Vintage Military standards. I was born too late to get a good price on a 1903. Maybe when rifles are being sold at the Travel Games again I will pick one up, if there is one.

@@JaredAF The U.S Model 1917 rifle is part of our CMP Games Rifle Matches, if the rifle fits rules 4.1.1, 4.1.2, 4.2.1 and 4.2.4 in the current edition of the CMP Games Rifle & Pistol Competition Rulebook: thecmp.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/2022CMPGamesRules.pdf. The rifle, if it follows the current rules maybe fired in our CMP Vintage Military Rifle Matches. I would LOVE to enter the Garand match next year! Only question i have is are you able to use just your normal 8rd clips through the whole match, other than the single shot you take? I know you take 10 shots per position, which to me, would be one full 8rd clip, reload a second full clip, fire 2 rds then eject the clip and remaining 6 rds... is that ok to do?

Hi Aron, Shooting the M1 Garand match is a lot of fun! It’s a heavy rifle, so it can be a challenge, BUT if you can handle the rifle, shooting the match isn’t super difficult. The match is fired in three stages (two stages are slow-fire). Stage 1 The match starts with a combined “sighter” period and 10 shots for record, slow-fire in the prone position in a continuous running time of 15 minutes. During that time, budget your sighter time and record firing time. (Take approximately 5 minutes to perfect your sighters, then burn approximately 10 minutes to shoot 10’s and X’s, all slow-fire, singly-loaded. During the slow-fire stage, you don’t need to use a clip at all (or you can buy a single-load clip, but it can be a pain to manage). Simply open the bolt, insert the round into the chamber (seating it in the barrel) and close the bolt (aim, then fire). Don’t “baby” the bolt, let it slam shut so the bolt locks into place. Repeat for your remaining four sighters and 10 shots for record (prone slow-fire). Stage 2 The rapid-fire stage requires using a clip (a normal 8-rounder OR special 2-rounder “highly recommended” and 2 rounds of ammunition) Two rounds need to be inserted into the magazine (well) under the bolt, so the bolt closes on an empty chamber. When targets appear (pit-operated targets) OR the command “Targets” is given (if shot on electronically-scored targets), the shooter drops from standing into prone position, acquires the proper target, pulls the charging handle completely to the rear and lets the first round lock into the chamber and commences firing 2 rounds. After the second round is fired, calmly insert a clip of 8 rounds, close the bolt and calmly, but accurately, fire each of the 8 remaining rounds into the center of the target. It’s 2 and 8 rounds, simple as that. No other combinations of rounds or magazines need to be considered. A total of 10 shots in 80 seconds... Stage 3 It’s standing slow-fire. Ten shots for record fired in a time limit of 10 minutes. On the firing line, stand. With one round, load. Commence firing when the target appears or the command “Start” is given Take your time and dress up every shot. This is where CMP Games matches are won or lost. Time is on your side, use it well... Be safe, shoot 10s and Xs!

I'm surprised with all the rifles that have been sold by the once federally chartered CMP, having been established by Teddy Roosevelt a hundred plus years ago. I can ask just about any of my friends, and they have no idea what the CMP is. You operate one shooting facility that I know of in Talledaga. Not very effective.

This is awesome. I bought an M1 years ago on a whim. They had dozens of them in a barrel at a gun shop in the early 80s. I was buying a hand gun when I saw this surplus barrel. So I bought one for me and one for my Dad (a WW2 vet). They were $50. Still have them both.

$1200 for a service grade M1? ⁉😱🤑.. That being the case, I'm aware of the supply/demand pushing the prices up.. But come on, who we kidding here? And yes, I totally support the sport, both in spirt, and in equipment.. But it's hard enough getting someone interested in the game, what with drive time, range fees, ammo, etc, without telling them they got to shell out a grand for the rifle..

All US government monies are gone from running the CMP. The CMP is now (and has been for years) supposed to be self financed. This is one of the major reasons for the prices being so high.
