I accepted the mission, successfully sneaked into each other's house, beat the family man, insulted the family woman, and kidnapped the competitor's daughter. Unfortunately, my identity was exposed, and then they kidnapped my family, smashed my casino, and threatened to make it difficult for me to live here. I'm angry. I'm just a wage earner. Hey not a problem... But just so you know China likes to have their ars kissed too. A little under 2 decades ago the world had a huge problem with the US backing China in entering the World Trade Organization, where they can weigh their needs and concerns in matters of trade. As the world predicted, China broke rules and didnt play on the same level as every other country. Still... The US hung on believing that opening the economy to a free market will drive their people to love capitalism and therefore the laws&liberty you'd normally find in a capitalistic/free market country... Sadly China has not. The Communist party has harnessed the WTO like a weapon and have stages economic/trade wars with other countries, US the most. If you do not believe they are weaponizing their trade then you will enlighten me how they have a twin surplus in their balance of payments. Either they are so good with free markets or they are abusing them and for some reason I dont have any reason to think why they are so natural at it.

Or are you just parroting the western media which likes to blame China for everything that is wrong in the capitalist economy? In case you have been too busy to read or listen or think. One of the objectives of the WTO is for the more advanced economies to help developing ones by trading AND by transferring technology to them. China being a huge country with a huge population started out being very backward, after centuries of oppression by the western powers (USA, UK, Europe) and Japan. It would take time for a developing economy to come on par with the advanced economies. China has since opening up to the world in 1978 developed unevenly. The provinces and cities on the eastern seaboard were way ahead of the provinces in the interior, which really could be labeled underdeveloped. When did parts of China become an a developed economy? And even as Shanghai and Beijing and Shenzen and Hong Kong qualified to "developed status" the provinces in the centre and the west were still backward. America, Europe and Japan were willing to transfer technology to China because they wanted access to cheap labour and huge consumer market. That is not stealing, that is trading.

Punctuated with many errors / misconceptions, nevertheless. 1. China did not bully Canada into any kinds of submission because Canada has a 'talisman' called the USA. In fact, prior to the Meng incident, China has always considered Canada as a 'friendly nation'. 2. China is not even a neighbor of Canada; China is on the other side of the globe while Russia shares a long border with Canada. 3. China was forced to response robustly to Canada's unfriendly unilateral action, with respect to Ms. Meng of HuaWei, or be misconstrued as a sign of China's weakness. 4. Last but by no means least, China and Canada do not have any major political, military, religious and territorial disagreements that pits them as enemies.

China raise, Western country must respect the raise of China, its true and power, we need to embrace the different culture and society. Ask yourself if you can engage with 1.4 billion of people, the world benefit from them. China raise with prosperity and buying power, Canada people should engage and benefit from them By the way, Chinese people are friendly, go and see for yourself. Chinese people live to learn from other cultures.

Mr. Studin presented unbiased, valid and correct analysis on USMCA, especially the all too important CLAUSE. my observation is US is always about US. it never care about its allies, vassals, or colonies. the sanctions imposed on Russia hurts its allies as well. from US perspective it's good so its allies won't pose a challenge to US.

Crazy how many Canadians will cry about their government acting like the well behaved dog of the USA, yet go on to try and hold the USA accountable for Canada’s problems instead of the people who are suppose to be in place to protect the interests of Canadian Citizen. Trump is not your problem, Trudeau is.

A huge problem with this person's analysis is that he doesn't immediately put his cards on the table and address the elephant in the room. Which is....should Canada have complied with a legal request to detain Meng with the aim of potentially extraditing her to the U.S.....Or should Canada have used every subterfuge at its disposal to not comply with this request. If you're a real Conservative you realize that is where the rubber hits the road. When you ask right wingers for an answer to this question the vast majority simply express their view that they think Trudeau has the behaviour of a homosexual. They usually put it in more salty terms. And Scheer has explicitly stated that he would take a stronger stance with China. Which in reality would mean ramping up the trade war with China. Just like Australia has just lost 15 billion in coal exports.

I have lived, studied, worked, and a permanent resident of Canada. After the recent event, I am worried about my investment (not only money, but time and heart) in Canada because I am not certain that Canada will remain a sovereign state in the medium to Long-term future. I can conceive a situation in the longer term future that I may live in Canada but under the jurisdiction of USA laws.

A great analysis. The only problem with it is that it takes the Chinese arrests, as reported in most Canadian mainstream media, at face-value. There are around 300,000 Canadians living in China and, at any given time, according to the Globe & Mail, there are 200 Canadians under arrest in China on average (compared with 600 Canadians under arrest at any given time in the U.S.). So the "issue" isn't that China arrested two Canadians. The issue is that China arrested two Canadians that the Canadian federal government did not want arrested. Michael Kovrig was knowingly working for an NGO which refused to register under China's NGO laws, the Chinese government explained this immediately upon his arrest but Trudeau, his government, and all the Canadian media chose to refer to the arrest as "arbitrary". Then, when Schellenberg got the death sentence, which was required given the evidence and laws in China, Trudeau referred to this as an "arbitrary" application of the death penalty...and again the Canadian media took this moronic statement as gospel and reported it as such. If Canadians are going to develop a meaningful trade and political relationship with China, it first needs to critique its own media which obviously has an intense anti-China bias.

When Trump woke up and saw that cheap steel & aluminium was coming in his country via China , he flipped his wig and concluded the situation with a swift kick in the arse of the reighning Canadian government , no pun intended!Trump is an American protectionist, that why he negotiated a new trade deal in his favor.Mexico has already ratified USMCA .

good video. I m from China been living in Canada for years. one thing that really confuse me is the hostility from the media to towards China , even there were never any beef between the 2 in history. I remember when I young we have to learn about Henry Norman Bethune a Canadian doctor who went to China helped chinese Army around ww2 in history class and the Chinese media always bring up Canada with a friend my warm tone since Canada is one of few west Countries that recognized china as a country after 1949 the chinese civil war ended. my point is that before mrs meng incident most chinese or the whole country were seeing Canada as a friendly, kind , trustworthy Nation.

This guy should be the prime minister's adviser. Hi's analysis hit the nail right on the head. This is not a legal calculation but a strategic calculation. Canada is heading a dead end. No one in this government has realized it including those "experts" on TV. Right now the government can't even get a chance to talk with Chinese government in any level. Sheer called out Trudeau to pick and call Beijing. I doubt he knows how the phone communication works. If there is no receiver on the other end, who do you talk to. Truth to be told, this guy's solution won't work either country. Before the federal election, there is no decent way out for Canada. Mark my words here, this government has lost the chance to turn around and recovering the relationship will take years to come.

Falling into this trap because of not able to realize the trap the US dug specifically for Canada shows how naive and inexperienced the Canadian young leadership is. Begging for help from the US who dug the trap specifically for Canada in the first place shows the intelligence level of the Canadian leadership, in term of international politics. It’s like a sheep with wolf’s teeth in its neck begging THE wolf to save its life. How could anyone expect an outcome other than what we see now?

We Canadians need to take off our moralistic glasses and see China for what it truly is. All this hysteria in the media about its "oppressive dictatorial regime" and "appalling human rights" is blinding us from fully reckoning with this complex, fascinating society, to the detriment of our national interest in engaging with what will, like it or not, be the first or second most important global player in the 21st century. This speaker is one of the few in this nation with the imagination and daring to present China with any semblance of objectivity. If only more of us visited the place or interacted with them on a person-to-person basis, there wouldn't be so much fear of the "Other".

It occurred to me this morning that a possible reason may be that Canada has become too attractive to Chinese people (especially educated or well to do people) so that huge amounts of capital both human and investment is making its way to Canada. The idea of the Chinese government is to impair this good feeling that Canadians have for these Chinese people. The idea is to cut down on the transfer of money and brains to Canada. Don Hansen

IMO as an educator he has a bias to be smart to his audience. He isn't since it is completely naive to say Canada can do as it wishes re China negotiations. The DC crew can and will destroy the Cndn economy if Canada doesn't do as it is told. US economy is heading south with national debt almost at the point where interest can't even be paid. DC is desperate to get $ from China sales here and Canada must help or else sanctions/tariffs/etc will be dropped on Canada to cripple its economy. He say anything about that???

As a Canadian and reading some of these posts first I have never felt like my country was a lapdog of the USA. Second at the end of the day would it not be so much easier if China wasn't a totalitarian state whereby the CP is the law. Third the United States thru us under the bus because we respected a treaty that we signed with the United States. In essence we do respect the rule of law by following thru on the request by the United States. Most Canadians don't like the present government because of the way that they fail to stand up to China for one and the United States. That will no doubt change this coming fall. If China wants to trade with the developed world then it must understand a rules based world where win win means fair trade for all parties involved. China opens up it's market and respects intellectual property and works at being a fair partner. If that happens then China will win friends honestly. That is a tall order for China hope that they are up to the challenge.

I think you make and interesting point on the Axis, but you forget the rest of Canada's neighborhood. I'm talking about an incredibly large population of Latin-Americans that share a language and a culture. Why Canada ignores even Mexico, which we have a free trade agreement with, is beyond me.
