The Canoe is a traditional pattern pocket knife built on the 3 5/8 inch cut-out frame that resembles a Canoe. The standard normally features a spear master blade and secondary pen blade. The frame is used for a variety of other knives that make up the canoe family

My main carry is usually a canoe. The ergos of the knife fit my hand just right. They’re weighty enough for serious cutting work but light enough to feel comfortable in my pocket. What believe is the definition of a EDC knife. I love Barlows as well, but the smaller frame makes it more of my typical Sunday carry, when I’m dressed for Worship. My dad always had a canoe in his pocket when I was growing up, so there’s a fair bit of nostalgia for me as well. Thanks for the video, I’m interested in checking out a gunboat now.

Only 5 years late, but I am relatively new to the channel. The canoe is one of my favorite patterns. Got started with canoes with a Fight‘n Rooster Waterfall handle Canittler and their black, green and red 3 canoe series.

Love the canoe. The looks, size is a sweet spot for medium sized hands and it's an easy open for both blades. Great video.

I have a Buck and a GEC 16. The feature of a canoe that I find appealing, other than the broad spearpoint blades, is how the blade tangs are almost hidden by the bolsters.

Great video and comparison. I just got me the same case canoe knife yesterday. With its wide thin blades it slices up food like no other. I cut up an onion yesterday and a couple apples and it instantly developed that beautiful patina. I’ve been getting into barlows and canoes lately for carry. I carry and amber bone rough rider Barlow often. Pretty impressive for a $12 knife. I like the different variations rough riders offer. Thanks for the video

HobieonKZfaq, Canittlers are pretty cool. It’s one of those mash ups that just work. I at first thought gun boats were just really big canoes or canittlers but after seeing a few it clicked. Big Stockman on a canoe frame. Thanks for watching. Love your channel!

I just started collecting Rough Ryders maybe a two months ago, and Canoes are my favorite. That's all I buy. I have two small lock backs, which I like too, but the canoe is my favorite. I like its symmetry, and it's traditional look. I just received the Blue Mule canoe, which is really cool, very impressed with it. The other canoes I have are the StoneWorks, love that one, and I have the small Queen City black pearl, which is a jewel, almost litereally. I have the Old South West, canoe too, that's really nice, very solid. And I have the Walmart "Jig Bone" Buck ( I guess that's the name), that's cool, only ten "bucks" no pun intended, but I dropped it and the shield fell out, I found it though, I just need to glue it in. Finally, I have that little red, "Black Cherry Bone" dog leg cocking canoe, that's a little beauty; I recieved that one and the G10 today, both awesome. I just ordered the blue smooth bone canoe, with the round shield, and the Artisan Wood canoe ( the green/yellowish color). But I'm nervous about knives with shields now. I also have that Artisan Wood in a lock back, and the shield was not flush, which drove me nuts, so I popped it out, and scraped the inside of where it's routed in the body with a screwdriver so it sits more flush. It looks better, but I still have to glue it. Should I use gel superglue? It seems I remember you saying to use gel glue somewhere. Maybe wood glue ( Elmer's) for the Artisan Wood. Now I have to buy some doubles so I can give them away.They are really cool.

The canoe has a visually balanced design; very satisfactory both to look at and to hold. The variants, larger, smaller, or with different blades alter that balance in a negative way. The standard canoe is a beautiful knife and a pleasure to hold and to use.

Thanks for sharing! It's a great comfy in the pocket pattern. That's what I like the most about it. Plus the spear point in my opinion is the best all around blade shape
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 5 жыл бұрын
Hard to argue with you on either point. I also find the spear point to be just a great all around blade and the canoe into the pocket. It's just a simple, useful knife. It doesn't pretend to be anything else. Thanks for watching!

I viewed your video, and it was very enlightening. My memory of Lincoln's knife was of a canoe, but apparently it was convex rather than concave, and therefore not a canoe at all. Thanks for getting my memory straight.

Not sure if it is in the millions but definitely in the thousands! The peach seed jigged bone is the most common of the Case bone handles and seems to never go out of production. And while this canoe is in CV it is far from rare. It is probably the most common Canoe in the Case line! Thanks for watching. I try to add new content every week.

@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 5 жыл бұрын
The Case seems a little better than the Rough Rider. Not sure about the Buck. Interestingly enough it seems like some the older Rough Riders have a stronger back spring than the newer ones with the half-stop. Just realized I was not subscribed to your channel. I just rectified that problem!

@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 3 жыл бұрын
Among the Rough Ryders, It really depends on what you're looking for in handle material. If you like a half stop you will need to get one the newer ones. As for name brands. I've only got Case and Rough Ryders. Case are better but at a cost that some will find unacceptable.

Why don't canoes have half-stops generally?
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 2 жыл бұрын
Case first developed the knife and I guess they just didn't feel like putting one in it. The pattern emerged in the early 20th century. Many knife patterns lack half stops. As I've said in other videos, the half stop is a preference thing. SMKW decided to put half stops on all their Rough Ryder knives and started pushing a myth about it being a sign of quality. In reality it is just a feature. Some claim it makes the knife safer to use. But even that is debatable.

Was sold 3 of a bad batch of Chinese made Buck Canoes with incredibly weak backsprings, the blades sat at an angle when deployed so this was not too safe. Have to say, the other parts of the knives were well made. Won't buy Canoes now (yes, that's irrational). Shame, as they'd be quite useful and they're good looking knives.
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 5 жыл бұрын
jelkel25, if you like the pattern, I’d suggest taking a shot with Case or Rough Rider. Case will repair or replace a bad one. SMKW (Smoky Mountain Knife Works) will do the same with any Rough Rider ( now Rough Ryder). But I’d suggest buying the Rough Ryder’s directly from SMKW to lessen the hassle. Cabelas carries Case Knives so if you have one of those nearby you can check out the knife before purchasing. I’ve never had problems with Buck Chinese made knives but then I haven’t bought a Buck Canoe. Sucks to have three bad knives. If I had that happen, I’d also be weary of not only the pattern but company. Thanks for watching! Thanks also for the input.
@blueeyeswhitedragon9839
@blueeyeswhitedragon9839 5 жыл бұрын
I almost hate to say it, but I just don't get this loyalty to Buck knives, especially since they have moved production of many of their knives to China. The traditionalist who swear by the Buck 110 ( almost 80 year old design ) will then defend the company on the basis of tradition, even though Buck produces much of it's stable off-shore.
Why do you buy all those cheap knives?
