With Falcon and The Winter Soldier giving us dancing Zemo memes, I want to discuss a Captain America tv show that isn’t on Disney+. Let’s analyze the 1966 Marvel Super Heroes cartoon series that was all kinds of weird, and that’s unbelievably difficult to get ahold of today. There’s some fascinating Marvel history behind this show that almost spelled an end to Steve Rogers as we know him today…

It’s just too bad the Hulk has been treated like a serial beater in recent years. “AND I CAN CONTROL MY ANGER *INFINITELY MORE THAN YOU!!!!!!!”* She(-Hulk) COULD. Before she became a raging misandrist like other MCU Phase 4 heroines (Captain Marvel, Jane Foster (only in Thor 4) and Kamala aka Ms. Marvel) while making the men weaker than water which is unfair to both sexes. Just a quick note about that "Krunch punch" clip (31:52): Based on what you've shown, I'm pretty sure the crunch sound is supposed to be for when Cap grabs Zemo's wrist in his steel-trap-like grip, hence the crunch. If you watch closely you will even see that it... syncs... up with Cap's super-fluid animation. This isn't to say that the sound effect isn't goofy as all heck, only that in this context it at least makes a lot more sense.

I happen to like these. They're 1960s silver age comics that come to life. I also like the voices behind the heroes. Especially Thor. He sounds just like Richard Burton. And to this day, it's still the voice I hear when reading a Thor comic. Anyway, they really shouldn't be hated, nor forgotten. They're nostalgic; if anything else. And most importantly, they were made during The Marvel Age of Comics. That; and you've got some beautiful Jack Kirby artwork to behold & enjoy..😉 p.s. Scott, I happen to have the entire run of these cartoons on DVD. And there're no skips or pauses. A wonderful addition to my superhero movie library.

I remember seeing these when I was a kid. They might have been on Channel 11 from New York, which we got in South Jersey when we got cable (you know, the kind with the box with all the buttons connected to the TV with a wire). The theme songs have stayed in my head ever since, and I remember being touched by the one with Cap's wartime girlfriend (not named as Peggy in the cartoon). Between that and Nickelodeon's Video Comics (a very early Nick show that moved the camera from panel to panel of DC comics while actors read the dialogue), I got a pretty good grounding in Silver Age comics at the age of about nine.

Scott, thanks so much for this Captain America video and also, the one on Thor. My friends and I remember watching these cartoons back in the Stone Age, when we were teenagers. We thought the animation and dialog were so bad, they were great ... they ranked alongside Clutch Cargo and Colonel Bleep for minimal animation. As primitive and corny as the cartoons were, they are unforgettable and should be made available. Look forward to your episodes on The Hulk, Iron Man, and the Submariner. BTW, I could have sworn I also watched the Spiderman cartoons along with the others. But, maybe I'm conflating things. Keep up the great work!

I had a bunch of these on VHS as a kid in the 80s. They were released under the banner of "the Marvel comics video library." Most video stores had at least 2 or 3 for rental (or you could order them from the distributor. They were relatively cheap). Not sure how many tapes were released in total. At least a dozen. Episodes of Spider-man were also part of the collection. The video cases featured some pretty cool art. I bet some are available on ebay. These cartoons also ran in reruns thru the 70s and 80s, so they werent totally forgotten. Great video though.

I actually have the original Sub Mariner VHS that included the X-Men and Avengers as Dr Doom used a hypnotic ray to get the Marvel villains to attack the gathering of heroes. Bad guys included Mole Man, Attuma, the Mandarin, Black Knight, and the Mad Thinker with his awesome Android. Funny thing, the building the heroes assembled in was Four Freedoms Plaza.

Back in the '80s these shows (the Cap show, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, Sub-Mariner, Spider-Man, and Fantastic Four) were commonly available and even just shown at comic cons. I remember there was a room dedicated to showing episodes at the big Boston comic con where Chris Claremont and Todd McFarlane were both big draws in like 1990. Also, the Iron Man and Fantastic Four cartoons were heavily sampled by hip-hop artists Ghostface Killah and MF DOOM so copies, probably on VHS were definitely still floating around in the late '90s.
